Azizi and Afazeli join Team Melli coaching staff.

According to Mehr news agency, The Iranian football federation FFIRI approved the proposal by Team Melli head coach, Amir Ghalenoei to add Khodadad Azizi and Houman Afazeli to the team’s coaching staff as technical advisors with immediate effect.

After an illustrious playing career starting in Mashad for Abomoslem and then moving on to the Persepolis, the Bundesliga club, 1. FC Köln, San Jose Earthquakes in the USA, Al-Nasr (UAE), and the Austrian side Admira Wacker, Azizi took to coaching. The fast winger never replicated his success on the field while he was on the bench of Abo Moslem, Payam Khorasan, Esteghlal Ahvaz, and Shahrdari Tabriz. He hardly completed a full season with any club as a coach.

Houman Afazeli had previous coaching experience at Team Melli when he was appointed as a technical advisor and analyst. He also coached several second-tier clubs in Iran’s second division.

AZMOUN LAND IN ROME AHEAD OF AS ROMA SWITCH

Sardar Azmoun is set to join Roma from Bayer Leverkusen.

The capital club has finalized a deal for the Iran international who is expected to join the Giallorossi on loan from Leverkusen after two underwhelming seasons in the Bundesliga.

According to Filippo Biafora of Il Tempo, Azmoun has already boarded a flight to Rome and landed in Ciampino airport at 20h00 local time.

The 28-year-old striker will undergo his medical with Roma tomorrow morning (Friday) before signing his contract with the Italian side.

Roma will have a buy option on Azmoun which will amount to around €13 million.

Roma’s transfer market escapades this season can be best described as a total slog. While certain moves happened in a flash, Roma’s hunt for a second striker to complement Andrea Belotti has hit snag after snag, and when Gian Piero Gasperini reportedly blocked Duvan Zapata’s move to Roma, it seemed like Roma might never get their striker.

Well, the hunt for a new striker is over.

Completely out of the blue, Serie A journalists started reporting this morning that instead of continuing to push for Duvan Zapata, Tiago Pinto decided to go in a different direction: signing Iranian striker Sardar Azmoun from Bayer Leverkusen and fulfilling one of José Mourinho’s original requests when he signed with Roma back in 2021.

Of course, back in 2021, Roma was unable to sign Azmoun and instead went to Eldor Shomurodov, while after his near-move to Roma, Azmoun continued with Zenit for one more season before moving to Leverkusen in the summer of 2022. Now, with both Roma and Azmoun unsatisfied with their current situations, it looks as if the Iranian Messi will truly be wearing a Roma kit.

Azmoun comes to Roma on an inexpensive loan with an option deal (what else), with that option valued at somewhere between €10 and €12 million. As opposed to the rumored Zapata deal, which Atalanta reportedly was finally going to accept this morning until Pinto decided to sign Azmoun, bringing in Azmoun on an inexpensive loan with an option likely leaves the door open for the Giallorossi to push hard for a January signing of Marcos Leonardo. A loan signing also makes Roma’s depth chart at striker seem slightly more manageable if Marcos Leonardo is signed, Belotti rediscovers his form, and Tammy Abraham returns from injury.

There are some hitches that prevent this move from being a perfect transfer, despite Roma seeming to beat out AC Milan for the striker’s signature. First is the simple matter that Azmoun is reportedly injured in the short term, with a reported return date of early September. That injury might make him feel right at home with Roma, but it doesn’t solve the immediate problems the Giallorossi are facing in terms of striker depth.

Perhaps more concerning is that Azmoun will undoubtedly be called up by the Iranian National Team for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, which takes place between January 12 and February 10 of 2024. Is it really worthwhile to bring in a striker on loan who’s unavailable right now and is almost guaranteed to be unavailable for an entire month later in the season?

This rumor seems to becoming reality incredibly fast, so expect more analysis on the Sardar Azmoun front once he’s landed in Rome. Keep an eye out on the Marcos Leonardo transfer saga as well, as reports indicate that Manchester United might be trying to swoop in on Roma’s pre-agreement with Santos. So that’s fun.

Sardar Azmoun linked to Milan move.

Sardar Azmoun is the latest striker to be linked with a move to AC Milan but as per Italian media, the interest is not that concrete. In fact, the Rossoneri remain focused on Chelsea’s Armando Broja.

Lorenzo Colombo is expected to join Monza on a season-long loan and therefore, Milan are set to bring in a striker before the window closes. Broja is their primary target, per Italian media, but Azmoun has also been linked with the club.

AC Milan are looking for a striker on the market and they have been linked with several players over the last few weeks. The latest name is Sardar Azmoun, who reportedly already has an agreement with the club.

Milan will send Lorenzo Colombo out on another loan spell for this season (Monza in pole position) and as a result, they are expected to sign a striker before the window closes. The latest player to be linked with the club is Azmoun.

The Iranian international currently plays for Bayer Leverkusen and according to BILD, he has a personal terms agreement with Milan. The latter are thus in talks with the German side over the transfer and it remains to be seen if an agreement can be reached.

Azmoun made 33 appearances for Leverkusen last season, 12 of them from the start, but found the back of the net just four times. At the age of 28, he needs to revive his career and his next destination might be Milan.

The challenge ahead for Ghalenoei.

Less than 20 days to go for Amir Ghalenoei’s next trial with Team Melli when the squad travels to meet Bulgaria for a friendly match in Hristo Botev Stadium in Plovdiv. Following that, if we believe FFIRI officials, there will be another friendly international against Angola in the Azadi stadium which is undergoing heavy maintenance!

So far, Ghalenoei’s second stint with Iran has been quite successful. Taking part in CAFA Nation Cup was quite effective, victorious, and a morale-boosting exercise for the squad as a whole. Never mind all those critics, who believe that Iran should only play the likes of Argentine, Brazil, Spain, and England rather than Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. It is a combination of ignorance and arrogance that has marred Iranian football for years and is one of the factors that have resulted in the regression of standards. We all know what happened last time Iran met England, right?

Arranging the two friendlies in FIFA Day was an excellent effort by FFIRI, which has been nothing short of a political comic show for years run by dubious characters injected by the regime to serve its political doctrine. We have had very little compliment to offer those men in FFIRI, but arranging the friendlies, playing in CAFA Nations Cup and the Jordan 4 side tournament in the critical time before the AFC Asian Cup 2023, is a fine job and credit must be given to the decision-makers.

Ghalenoei, then, will have little excuse to complain about the lack of preparations. Although nothing runs smoothly in Iran, at least there are enough matches to give the coaching staff a pretty good idea of whom to play and whom to leave out. Undoubtedly, there will be complaints during the camp as the National Training Centre where the team will be residing, has lots of problems highlighted by other sporting teams.

Ghalenoei, like coaches before him, has inherited a team, that has no shortage of talent, experience, and quality despite some sensitive divisive issues. Apparently, there is still some bitterness between the two camps of players during the Dragan Skocic removal saga. That aside, Ghalenoei has to deal with more pressing issues.

The squad is getting old and that was apparent in the last World Cup. Only one player is under 25, while many have gone over that critical 30 years line. The direct impact of an aging team is, of course, stamina and pace. Historically, Iranian teams for some odd reasons, never had a good pace in their sides. Players like Khodadad Azizi, Mehdi Mahdavikia, and before them, legends like Hassan Rowshan  were the odd ones out and are not in abundance in Iranian football these days. That is a big disadvantage, that Ghalenoei can do little about in the coming period. Teams like Japan and Korea, with a combination of pace and skill, can be a serious threat to the laggard Iranians.

While Team Melli is well endowed in defense and offense and to a certain extent, goalkeeping, it is the middle of the field where Team Melli falls short of the opposition. Saeid Ezatollahi and Saman Ghoddos have been big disappointments, especially the former. Amiri is aging and not a 90-minute player, Nourollahi and Gholizadeh huff and puff but never manage to take a game by the scruff of the neck, Hajsafy in his dynamic roles, sometimes in defense and sometimes midfield, is also suffering from a lack of pace and stamina. That leaves Jahanbakhsh and Mohebbi as the two players in the middle of the field, and flanks, who must take this heavy burden of supporting the forwards. Both are essentially attacking players.

There is no creative midfielder in this current Iranian team. Even if Ghalenoei tried to introduce such quality in midfield, he will have a hard time finding such talent in a league that lacks quality, creativity, and inspiration.

While expecting a major facelift in Team Melli in less than 5 months is unreasonable, the building period for future Team Melli has to start after the AFC Asian Cup in Qatar. But for now, it is a sure bet that Ghalenoei will not contemplate any major changes. Like any other coach, he might prefer players that can serve his purpose and tactics, so we will not be shocked by excluding some current Team Melli starters come the Asian Cup 2023.

It is essential that Ghalenoei does not lose control of the discipline and make an example of players like Kananizadegan whose childish antics were in front of all to see. Losing such control could be the Achilles Heel of the squad.

The match versus Capo Verde is OFF !!

As usual yet another friendly match arranged by FFIRI is canceled only days after it is announced!!

Mehdi Taj, head of FFIRI, has earlier announced that a match against Capo Verde has been agreed upon, with the venue still to be confirmed but most probably it will be in Tehran.

Today, the director of Team Melli had something else to say about the international friendly matches on FIFA Day.

According to Mehdi Mohammad Nabi; the contract for the first friendly match, which is scheduled to be held on September 07, against the Bulgarian national team, has been approved by both federations, the relevant confederations, and FIFA. He added: Regarding the second friendly match which is scheduled to be held on September 12, considering that the Cape Verde national team has an official match against the Togo national team on September 10, and based on the statements of the representative of the mentioned federation, they have not succeeded in changing the time of the official game!!!. Accordingly, Cape Verde will not be able to play the friendly match in Tehran. (…)

He added: “We are trying to take the necessary measures after consulting with the head coach of Team Melli for finding other options for the second friendly game.”

Yet again, it is another messy, amateurish act by this federation whose intellect and professionalism are on par with that of primary school pupils, with the utmost respect for the kids. How on earth, they even think of arranging a friendly match with a National Team that plays in Africa, and expect the squad to be in Tehran two days later for a match against Team Melli, is beyond comprehension!!!

Iranian football has for the last four decades severely suffered from mismanagement, failures, screw-ups, and a lack of common sense in the most basics of administration and management. We are not even approaching corruption, political interference, nepotism, and bias.

The standard of management personnel, mostly inept former or current civil servants, Basij, revolutionary guards, and regime loyalists, have left Iran’s football handicapped and absent from crowing and championships for nearly half a century.

And there is NO hope of any improvement in sight.

Tottenham are reportedly trying to land Mehdi Taremi from Porto

By RYAN TAYLOR – The Daily Express

Tottenham are reportedly trying to land Mehdi Taremi from Porto
Super-agent Jorge Mendes is ‘on the ground’ negotiating the potential transfer of Porto striker Mehdi Taremi to Tottenham, according to reports in Portugal. The Iranian is the subject of shock talks with Spurs and that would suggest Daniel Levy is exploring the prospect of adding attacking reinforcements to Ange Postecoglou’s squad as the uncertainty surrounding Harry Kane’s future threatens to rumble on.

But there has now been a surprise twist after it emerged Tottenham were looking into a surprise swoop for 31-year-old Taremi.

According to Record in Portugal, Mendes is working on bringing the Iran international to north London for Levy and Co.

Tottenham are reportedly prepared to pay £21m for Taremi and hopes they can shake off competition from the likes of AC Milan for the player.

Porto are looking for at least £26m, however, and even still are reluctant to lose their star man so close to the start of a new season.

Taremi is mindful that this could be his last chance to play in the Premier League as he approaches the latter stages of his career.
There has already been interest from England this summer from Sean Dyche’s Everton.

However, the offer was of little interest to Taremi, who recently told Varzesh3: “Now there is an opportunity, but even now, for example, Everton’s offer doesn’t interest me.”

He also claims he had the chance to join Newcastle back in 2021 but he instead opted to play Champions League football with Porto.

Taremi continued: “I have had an offer from Newcastle but I rejected their offer because we were in the Champions League and I could play against teams like Liverpool, AC Milan, and Atletico Madrid.

“I preferred to stay at Porto because Newcastle were fighting to remain in the Premier League and I didn’t think they could qualify for the UCL after their bad season.”

Spurs chairman Levy has now reportedly flown to the USA for a two-week holiday, which could scupper Bayern’s chances of landing Kane.

It has been suggested that the striker would favour staying in north London if a move hasn’t been resolved by the start of the new season next weekend.

More Team Melli preparatory matches arranged

According to Mehdi Taj, the Head of IRIFF, Team Melli will meet Capo Verde for a match on 12th September as part of FIFA Day, a few days after playing Bulgaria.

Capo Verde, (Cape Verde) is an archipelago off the western coast of Africa, until three-fourths of the 20th century, was under the governance of Portugal. It is ranked 66 in the FIFA Ranking and has produced good quality footballers that played in Europe, particularly Portugal.

The match against Capo Verde will most probably be held in Iran although the venue is not finalized yet. This is the first time, the two meet at any level.

Taj also confirmed that Iran accepted the invitation of the Jordanian FA for participation in the Jordan four nations tournament 2023 which will be held in Amman. Apart from host Jordan, Oman, and Iraq will join Iran in this tournament, the second of its kind after last year’s. Iran will play Iraq on the 13th of October in the first match. The winner of this match will meet the winner of Jordan vs Qatar on the 16th of October.

With four international friendly matches scheduled, and possibly more, AMir Ghalenoei will have plenty of opportunity to arrange his desired lineup for AFC Asian Cup 2023 which will start on January 2024.

Azmoun out injured for two months

Sardar Azmoun, Team Melli and Bayer Leverkusen’s forward have just recently joined his teammates for pre-season training. Azmoun, who had suffered an injury a short while back was immediately tested for physical condition and underwent a medical examination to determine the extent of his old injury.

According to Kicker magazine, Sardar Azmoun claimed that he was injured in the left leg tendon area last week, and thus he will be out of action for 6 to 8 weeks. Kicker announced the definite absence of Azmoun in the first three matches of Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, as well as the team’s first match in the DB Pokal. The striker will definitely not be able to play for a team until the middle of September, and if his treatment goes well according to plan, he will be ready for selection for the match against Bayern Munich on September 24. Azmoun struggle with this injury comes at a time that Team Melli has a full training schedule during FIFA Day in September. Iran will play Bulgaria and an African team, which is yet to be named.

The absence of Sardar Azmoun will be quite disappointing for Amir Ghalenoei who was hoping to test the duo Azmoun and Taremi against tougher opposition starting with Bulgaria in five weeks time.

Broadcaster Khiabani shocks the system.

The banning of Javad Khaibani’s activities on official media seems to be ruled out with the renowned broadcaster appearing on Channel 3 and also on Sports Network’s program.

Javad Khayani’s recent statements in one of the special talk shows of the Home Show Network, in which he quite fearlessly highlighted the economic plights of his countrymen, corruption in sports, and multiple system failures, had created speculations that his activities would be banned on television and also in other visual media.

But on Wednesday, the telecast of the friendly football match between the Manchester City and Bayern Munich teams ended those speculations with Khabani reporting on the game for the TV channel.

The Iranian regime has a habit of blanking its critics and forcing the media to stop publishing images or quotes. The most famous of these critics in recent times is none other than Ali Karimi, who has turned into a cult hero following his harsh criticism against the regime for the oppression of women and the wide corruption. Karimi, the former Captain of Team Melli, Bayern Munich, and Persepolis player left the country fearing for his life.

Khiabani, the veteran TV broadcaster, had some hard words for the authority in a recent TV show reflecting on the plight of Iranians and how the system prevents their progress in all fields.

After this harsh talk, there were calls by hardliners to ban Khiabani.

The regime is well-known to have zero tolerance for public criticism, even the constructive type. It is especially sensitive to celebrities, sports personalities, and Artists, many of whom have been banned for speaking out against the regime practices in the aftermath of Mahsa Amini’s death in police custody.

Adel Ferwosipour is another broadcaster who is currently on the blacklist and has not been seen on TV for a long time since his quite famous and controversial TV show ‘Navad’ has been taken off the air.

IRIB, the official government broadcasting apparatus, is under the control of Ayatollah Ali Khamenai’s office. Policies and direction are scrutinized and channeled toward being a propaganda machine for the Iranian regime., The TV programs have an immense amount of religious content and the screens are mostly colonized by the Shia clergy giving sermons to a population that is living under extremely harsh economical conditions.

Despite Khiabani’s brave words, some cynics in social media have accused the broadcaster and his masters of staging this show. Those people believe that there is no way anyone dares to talk so openly criticizing the system with the approval of the regime’s security agents who have permanent residency in the IRIB properties.

Iran is the 4th worst country on World Press Freedom Index with Vietnam, China, and North Korea being worse.
