A product of Bushehr clubs. As a youngster, he started his career with Bargh Busher before playing his senior career in Iranjavan. Transferred to Persepolis in 2014 where he had a consistent season. Scored two goals in his first full game for Team Melli against Guam in the qualifying rounds of the FIFA World Cup 2018.

Taremi was banned for four months because of a contract dispute with Turkish club Çaykur Rizespor dating back to June 2016, when the player reached an agreement to join the club and later returned to Persepolis. After Joining Al Gharafa in Qatar playing for 1 season in 2018, Taremi then joined the Portuguese side Rio Ave on 23 July 2019.

His impressive record with the middle-of-the-table club attracted the big boys of Portugal as all the 3 top clubs were suitors. FC Porto finally managed to attract Taremi. It was Mehdi Taremi best season ever as he scored 16 goals for his club Porto which finished second in the table.
At the start of season 2024/25 Taremi as a free agent Joined Internazionale of Milan.
