Emotional control, Iranian athletes great weakness.

Member of the Iranian Olympic Committee and head of its Psychology Commission condemned the mentality of conspiracy theorist in the country rather than identifying the root causes of Iranian athletes, coaches and technical factors in defeats. “There is a very obvious weakness in emotional control in Iranian sport.”

Dr. Hamzah

In an interview with ISNA, Dr Khosro Hamzeh commented on what he described as a plague of Iranian sport which has even spread to the grassroots levels, which has led to the Iranian Cadets team wrestling team losing the World Championships title in Bulgaria, a few days ago.

Dr. Hamzeh said “The most important thing is to be able to correctly identify the source of the problems. Unfortunately, in Iranian sport, many of the key issues of grievances, including protests of athletes, coaches, and technical managers, are caused by emotional and psychological factors. Those who lose always try to address external factors such as conspiracy and the influence of competitors for their loss. Rather than addressing the real issues, their own shortcomings and failures be it technical or otherwise, the easiest target is external factors”

The weakness of emotional control in Iranian sport

He continued”In the case of that Cadet wrestler, who cost his country dearly by being disqualified from the competition, he clearly lacked emotional control, because this young boy who needed to be raised at home educated at school, and trained by the club and national team from the onset of his career on important matters such as behavior and self-control.”

The Psychologist expert of NOC, pointing out that protests and dissents against referees in several sports have become a widespread issue, said: “We have seen many protests in sports, including football, volleyball, wrestling, futsal and other sports. Many winners, despite their high technical abilities or managerial capacities, have poor conduct or no control over their emotional and fail to control both positive and negative emotions.”

The necessity to establish appropriate training structures

Dr. Hamza continued “Another important issue that should be put on the agenda of Iranian sport as soon as possible with appropriate training structures is to provide the necessary training to athletes, coaches and other technical managers that are not only related to emotional control, but also about excitement and variety of behavior markers including anger management, stress, and other issues that trigger negative reactions and responses. He said that while accepting the flaws and problems we should avoid playing conspiracy theory”

” lack of emotional control is the Achilles’ heel of Iran’s sport and unfortunately we will continue to witness unsavoury conducts in the near future in most sports in Iran unless firm and positive actions are taken to avoid these shortfalls and address the root causes of the problems. We will not improve and this problem will remain unresolved if we accept the status quo.”

The Role Models

Hamzah points out that, “unfortunately, inappropriate Role models and icons have been created in Iranian sport, and most frequently the media has played a role in such creation. Media must play a responsible role by not endorsing those athletes with disruptive behaviours. It is very important for athletes’ of younger ages to look for a true role model.”

“Excellence and winning in sports are quite important, but how an athlete achieves it and how they behave, how they control their emotions, how they respect opponents and finally how they choose to live their private lives are important subjects of consideration. Even dressing, talking and other behaviours of an athlete are very important, and the icon is one that is technically and ethically excellent”

He added that “A sportsman such like Hamid Sorian, who is the best-decorated athlete in the history of Iran’s sport and a technically top world wrestler. Although Hamid Sorian is not a flawless human being, he has never been narcissistic and has hardly displayed inappropriate behaviour at the community level.

Icon building in Iranian Sports and Media

“Promoting sub-standard and suspect athletes in Iranian sports by the media has resulted in a wave of athletes’ narcissism and thus inappropriate role modelling for kids of age groups,” he said.

Referring to the Champions League final of 1986, he said: “In this competition, we saw the deaths of 38 Juventus fans, while Liverpool won the title, in the aftermath of the tragedy, English teams were kicked out of European competitions for several years. Although the British had a great influence on UEFA and FIFA, there was no intervention or lobbying to reduce the ban. In Iran, it is a natural habit to barter, bargain and negotiates any sanctions, disciplinary ruling or ban.”

“In Iran and after every disciplinary committee ruling, we witness interference and pressure from club representatives, governors, member of parliament and officials of the various federations. Even people, who are not related to the sport or the ruling, get a chance for rhetorical statements in the press who are normally quite happy and welcoming to publish such controversies. Such undue pressures have meant that disciplinary decisions are feeble and rarely respected.

The higher the profile of the club or the player, the weaker is the disciplinary sentence. We can safely claim that most disciplinary sentences in Iran is a farce.”

Team Melli vs. Bangladesh called off.

Bangladesh’s national team head coach expressed his satisfaction with the cancellation of the proposed international friendly match against Iran.

According to Daily Star, Bangladeshi Football Federation requested the arrangement of a friendly in Doha just before the start of the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers.

The Secretary-General of the Bangladesh Federation has said that the match was cancelled because the two sides could not agree on the dates of the match in Qatar. Bangladeshi national football team coach Jimmy Dee said “Iran is ranked 20th in FIFA World Cup Ranking and we are in the 182nd position. Our goal is to improve our position in FIFA ranking, so if we play with strong teams and not be able to defeat them and fail to get points, we will not be able to climb up the FIFA ranking, so it is better to play with other teams instead of playing with Iran.”

FIFA World Cup qualifier will start in September. Team Melli is will have at least one friendly match before its opening match versus Hong Kong on 10th September. FFIRI is still searching for an opponent.

Iran is grouped with Iraq, Bahrain, Hong Kong and Cambodia in the Preliminary Round 2 Group C of the World Cup qualifiers.

The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) is in discussion with its Iranian counterpart for a FIFA Friendly ahead of the two teams’ first match of the World Cup Qualifiers in September.

A high-placed BFF official yesterday confirmed that they have sent a proposal to the Iranian Football Federation regarding a friendly match in Doha, Qatar in the first week of September, however, the fixture is far from set.

“We have contacted Iran Football Federation regarding a match, and their initial reply is a positive one. However, we have a few other teams on our list and the fixture is not finalised as yet,” BFF’s general secretary Abu Nayeem Shohag told The Daily Star.

“Since our first match of the qualifiers in on September 10, we would like to have an 8-10 days’ training camp in Doha after a few days’ training in Dhaka. We are planning for a friendly match against a national team during that time in Doha. The match could be held on September 4th or 5th, so that the team can fly straight out of Doha for the first qualifying match against Afghanistan,” Shohag added.

Tehran Times, a leading Iranian newspaper, earlier reported that since both the teams have their first matches on September 10, a September 5 fixture between Iran and Bangladesh is being negotiated by the two federations.

Iran are the highest-ranked Asian team at the moment, currently 20th in FIFA Rankings. Bangladesh, on the other hand, is ranked 183rd.

Bangladesh last met Iran during the 1990 World Cup qualifiers in 1989. Bangladesh lost both matches, 2-1 in Dhaka and 1-0 in Tehran.

Iran – Iraq Friendly international!

The Iranian Mehr news has reported that Iran will play a friendly match against Iraq in Basra in November of this year, according to a statement by Mehdi Taj.

On the occasion of the courtesy visit by Iraq’s Youth & Sports Minister to the National Teams Football training centre, accompanied by the president of the Iranian football federation, Mahdi Taj, confirmed that part of the bilateral agreement with the Iraqi side was arranging of friendly international matches hosted by both countries.

What seems to be quite odd with this news is that Iraq and Iran will be meeting in the AFC Asian Cup China 2023 second-round qualifiers in Basra on 14th Nov. It is not known if this supposedly friendly match is going to be played before or after the official AFC qualifier. It is highly unusual, in fact not even heard of, for two teams to arrange friendlies matches before meeting in an official competition.

It is unlikely for Team Melli under Marc Wilmots to attempt such endeavour. Mehdi Taj might have been referring to other national teams such as the U23 Omid team or U19.

Apart from the game against Iraq in November 2019, Team Melli’s last match in the second round of the AFC Asian qualifiers 2023 is on 09th Jun 2020 against Iraq in Azadi Stadium.

Three places drop in Team Melli’s FIFA Ranking

IN the latest ranking published by FIFA, Iran dropped three places to No 23 while solidly maintaining its top AFC ranking.

Team Melli lack of competition plus the continental competitions in the Americas and Africa has resulted in many teams getting points while Iran remaining stagnant on theirs.

Team Melli is in the 23rd spot with 1518 points

Iran is one spot behind USA (1548 pts) and one above Wales (1514 pts).

FIFA deadline on allowing females into stadiums

FIFA deadline for Iran, to allow females in the stadiums starting with FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifying matches has expired today, and now the Iranian Football Association is forced to allow families and ladies into the stadiums while hosting Team Melli matches.

In other word, the promise given by President Hassan Rouhani to the FIFA president Infantino needs to be implemented else Iranian football will possibly be sanctioned.

12 days after Iran and Syria’s friendly match at Azadi Stadium, Gianni Infantino, in a letter to the Iranian Football Federation, praised the presence of women in that match, requesting that the process be continued, and the ban on the presence of women in Iranian stadiums fully lifted.  In this letter, a deadline for Iran’s football was set on the 15th of July, after which women would be free to attend all stadiums hosting all football matches at national and international levels.

This did not occur last time Team Melli played against the Omid team, but in any case, that match was played behind closed doors and was off-limits to the public in Azadi.

The FIFA president mentioned in the letter that Iran’s football should take a lesson from the recent Women’s World Cup in France and free up the presence of families at Iranian stadiums. Infantino has pointed out that FIFA is aware of the cultural challenges and simply wants to make progress in this regard, not only because of the progress of women in the world, but also as a matter of fact, and is one of the fundamental principles of the FIFA Constitution.

On Monday, Mahdi Taj stated that the response letter was sent to FIFA and the federation is allowing women in the national team home games in the 2022 World Cup.

With the end of the FIFA deadline, a big challenge is brewing for the football executives because, despite the promises of authorities in the past, there has not been a definite step in the preparation of women’s presence in the stadium, which still has a lot of legal prohibitions and sensitivities.

The problem, of course, is not the FFIRI which is quite content to allow women in the stadium, but the religious fundamentalist who are determined to force their extremist ideas on the population.
