GROUP A: Iran rivals historical data review

With the draw of the third round concluded in Kuala Lumpur AFC headquarters, Iran has been grouped with Korea Rep., Syria, Iraq, UAE, and Lebanon.

While navigating this group of teams is not as easy as it looks on paper, the historic data supports Iran and draws a clear picture of superiority against its rival, the exception being South Korea which the teams are neck to neck on records.

Iran has played a total of 114 matches against these 5 teams with a percentage of wins set at 57%. Only 15% of the matches ended in a loss against these rivals.

The latest team that defeated Iran in any match was Iraq back in the 2nd round. UAE never won against Iran in official competition matches.

Loss records

In the same FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, Team Melli has suffered its last loss. Surprisingly Lebanon was the latest team that has defeated Team Melli again in the World Cup qualifiers but that was 8 years ago. The third-ranked defeat came from Kore Rep in the quarter-finals of the AFC Asian Cup 2011 in Qatar and that was 11 years ago.

The record of the last defeat goes to Syria which managed its only win against Iran in the Qualifiers some 48 years ago.

An exciting draw for Iran.

If there was an easier draw in the final round of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, then Iran has possibly the better group of the two.

Not only the opponents are well known for Team Melli but the logistics will be that much easier with 4 neighbors per se with the only long-distance travel being Korea. The most familiar team is Iraq which Iran recently defeated in the second round to qualify for the final round.

Korea will remain the most serious of the group contenders. The star-studded team of the Koreans have qualified for the World Cup 10 times and is well-positioned to make it number 11 along with Iran.

the four Arab countries in the group stand an equal chance of qualifying. Although Syria was the best performer of the four teams in the second round, it will be difficult for the Syrians to repeat this performance in the third round, especially since they lost their head coach the Tunisian Nabil Maaloul.

Iraq will always remain a strong team despite the difficult circumstances surrounding the team. In the draw ceremonies, the Slovenian coach of Iraq national Team Katanec was absent while doing the after-draw interviews. That does not augur well for the coach who is on shaky ground. It is not clear if he will be continuing with the team.

UAE was trailing Vietnam in the group until the last day. However, a great awakening in the last match, pushed UAE to a win against Vietnam to head the group and qualify directly to round three. UAE is a well know opposition to Iran but has never defeated Team Melli. UAE also remains a favorite away venue to Iran.

Lebanon was perhaps the luckiest team of the group but by no mean the punching bag. Their performance in the group with Korea was quite admirable. Although their chance of qualifying is minimal, they do represent a challenge for the others especially the lower ranked group teams. The economic situation of Lebanon would be the biggest off-field challange to their preparations for the third round.

Monetary Value of Top Asian Teams

Between the ِAFC Asian Cup 2019 finals that took place in the UAE, and the current combined qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup 2022 and AFC Asian Cup 2023 in China, a significant change of players’ market value has occurred despite the Corona pandemic that struck the world.  This change in player’s value significantly changed the ranking of the teams of the Asian continent. There are 39 teams participating in the current qualifiers after the withdrawal of North Korea, and they were divided into 8 groups, each of which includes 5 teams. 12 teams have qualified for the third round.

These variables that occur in the market value are an indication of the strength or weakness of the teams. In the 2019 Asian Cup, South Korea was at the forefront of the table with a market value of 84 million and 300,000 euros, but it fell to second place, despite its value rising to 126 million and 380 thousand euros, compared to Japan’s rise to the top now with 144 million euros. It is noteworthy that the Australian team fell to fourth place after its market value fell from 50 million and 600 thousand euros to 36 million and 500 thousand euros, while Iran climbed to third place from the value of 45 million and 350 thousand euros up to 79 million and 330 thousand euros.

The Saudi team leads the market value of the Arab Asian teams participating in the current qualifiers with 25 million 780 thousand, and occupies seventh place in the general ranking of the Asian continent, with an increase of more than 5 million euros from 2019. The UAE team ranked second among the Arabs of Asia With a value of 22 million 380 thousand euros, a double value of 2019, which was 8 million and 580 thousand, to rise from the tenth in 2019 to the eighth continental, then Qatar with 16 million and 430 thousand, and Iraq, which rose from 5 million and 380 thousand to 10 million and 280 thousand.

As far as the teams are concerned, Japan is the undisputed top team in Asia. A country that has planned its progress for over four decades ago, is now repeating the benefit of its hard work in every department. Not only they administer and manage their football to perfection in Japan. Unlike some other nations such as Saudi Arabia and China which opted to spend a huge amount of money to gain success, the Japanese program embodied a culture, sense of responsibility, education, strong infrastructure, and emphasis on grass-root football to develop and progress. As such this Japanese model is exemplary and produced quality players that are now working in the best leagues of Europe. Soon, Japan will also produce quality coaches from the generation that has retired. It is only a matter of time.

As a team, Japan is the most expensive in Asia.

Azizi Khadem now says Skocic is contracted intil the end of the qualifying rounds.

According to the Mehr reporter, Shahabuddin Azizi Khadem, the president of the Football Federation, commenting on Dragan Skocic, Team Melli Head Coach’s contract ” Skocic will remain in charge for the 10 matches of the third round FIFA World Cup qualifiers. This might include Fifa day friendly matches.”

Regarding Skocic’s assistants, the president of the Football Federation emphasized: “Both Vahid Hashemian and Karim Bagheri will continue their work in the national team.”

On the other hand, Mansour Ghanbarzadeh, Secretary-General of FFIRI said that the figure of Skocic’s contract is not that significant to mention (…) Skocic’s contract figure is reasonable.” Ghanbarzadeh added that ” Skocic’s plans for the national team: Skocic will present his plans to the presidency of the federation as in the previous round.”

Daei is still at the top with Cristiano Ronaldo.

With Portugal’s exit from the Euro 2020 after the defeat against Belgium, Daei has maintained his record with Cristiano Ronaldo unable to better his 109 tally.

No doubt that the Portuguese superstar, still in top shape despite his 36 years, will have plenty of chances to break the record, however, for the next few months “The Shariyar” is still there at the top.

Ali Daei has been the talk of the town in the last few months as the media around the globe has once again been awakened by the fact that Ronaldo is approaching his record of international goals.

The two players exchanged complimentary messages on social media on the occasion of Ronaldo reaching 109 goals showing respect to each other.

Dragan Skocic confirmed as head coach of Team Melli to the World Cup.

Following Team Melli’s successful qualification to the third round of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and also qualification to the finals of the AFC Asian Cup 2023, there were ambiguities about the status of Dragan Skocic’s post as the head coach.

After the squad returned from Bahrain, Shahab Azizi Khadim, the head of FFIRI announced that the contract with Skocic has expired with the conclusion of the second round of the preliminaries and his federation’s Board of Directors will meet to discuss the future of Head Coach post of Team Melli.

On the other hand, in an interview with a local TV station, the incumbent coach Skocic, refuted any claims of expiry of the contract as he clearly mentioned that he has a contract up to the end of the World Cup.

On Sunday, the Football Federation eventually decided to continue with the services of the Croatian coach. “The Football Federation reached a joint agreement with the head coach of the national team until the end of the third qualifying round of the World Cup,” Shahabuddin Azizi Khadem confirmed the news. The president of the football federation added: “After the draw of the third round, it was decided to make proper plans for this stage and the football federation will put all the necessary facilities for the preparation of the national team and a strong presence in the third round on the agenda.”

The draw for the final qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be held on July 1st in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and the Iranian national football team is seeded no 2 as head of a 6 team group drawn from two pots.

Dragan Skočić, left Tehran early morning Monday for a one-week break in Croatia.

Cristiano Ronaldo responds to Daei

Following Ali Daei’s congratulation message to Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portugues scored and equaled Daei’s all-time record for the highest number of International Goal, the Portuguese superstar responded in kind.

Ronaldo posted on his personal page tp thanked Daei with these words”

The two players Daei and Ronaldo faced each other once during the FIFA World Cup 2006 group match in Frankfurt, Germany. The match ended 2-0 to Portugal.

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022: AFC 3rd round teams

The draw for the third round of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers will be held on July 1st, 2021. Apart from host Qatar, a total of 4.5 slots (4 direct slots and 1 inter-confederation play-off slot) in the final tournament are available for AFC teams

This is the review of the 12 Asian teams that have qualified for the Third Round with a look at their chances of qualifying for the World Cup.

Japan sits firmly on the top of the Asian football pyramid with perfect results in the preliminaries. Notwithstanding any disasters, it is a team that is assured a place in Qatar. Runner-up to the Champions Qatar in AFC Asian Cup 2019, Japan maintains the skeleton of that strong team and continues growing in all aspects. Almost all the squad players play in Europe. Their group in the second round of the competition was perhaps the weakest of all the rest and hence Japan was never really tested. Highly disciplined team having qualified for the last six consecutive FIFA World Cups with second round advancements in 2002, 2010, and 2018, and having won the AFC Asian Cup a record four times.

Iran, a traditional football power in Asia, started the completion on a firm footing scoring 14 goals against Cambodia in the 2nd match, however, under an ineffectual coach with little knowledge of Asian football, the Belgian Marc Wilmots, Iran lost two matches in a row and was seriously risking elimination from the preliminaries. However, Wilmots was gone after the two defeats and the appointment of Dragan Skocic, turned Iran’s fortune as they completed the return leg with a perfect record.  Team Melli is trying to achieve a third consecutive qualification to the World Premiere competition and the chances are quite high to do that in 2022.

Iran’s weakness lies in the organization and the incompetency of its federation. The financial difficulties have compounded the issues and made life difficult for Team Melli as far as training camps and friendly match arrangements are concerned. The incompetence of the administration has always been an issue and a big hurdle in the natural progress of football. The strength of the team lies in the forward where the duo of Taremi and Azmoun can conquer the strongest of the defenses. A significant number of new players have been gradually introduced to the team and most of them have displayed quality performances whenever they got their chances. A team with a good bench that the coach can depend on.

Australia remains a strong contender for a place in the finals of FIFA World Cup 2022. Traditionally a strong squad mainly due to the presence of many players in Europe, Australia has maintained its rank as one of the top four in Asia.  Although the Australian league falls short of being in the top ranks of AFC and the league is considered lacking many aspects, the country, however, always manages to produce quality athletes and footballers at a high level.  Although Appointed officially in August 2018 as head coach, Graham Arnold has been with the Australian Nationa team since 2000 in various roles. He is one of the most accomplished coaches in this round and has a vast knowledge of his opponents in Asia. He is assisted by the Dutch coach René Meulensteen forming an impressive partnership.

Korea Republic is by far the most successful World Cup team in Asian football having participated in nine consecutive and ten overall FIFA World Cup tournaments, the most for any Asian country. This succus, however, is not replicated at the AFC Asian Cup with Korea won twice but not since the late fifties. The Koreans have a strong league system and have won many major trophies at the club level. Most of the Korean players have been ending up in the European league. Son Heung-min, the Team Captain and Tottenham Hotspur’s winger is an icon in his country and a player with remarkable speed agility, and scoring instinct. The Team lost 1 point only in the second round but it is expected to be a major contender for a place in the finals yet again.

Saudi Arabia played a nervous round mainly due to pressure on the team by a critical press that wanted nothing less than 100% wins. On the field, an Uzbek team was threatening to dethrone the Saudi’s from the top of the table with some solid performances. However, in the end, it was nothing more than a temporary setback for Saudi Arabia that only drew two matches. n squad comprehensively defeating Uzbekistan and qualifying. The squad lacks the traditional stars of yesteryears with many inexperienced players inducted to add power and punch to what was becoming an aging team. The coach has done a very good job in mixing youth and experience, desp[ite constant cries for his removal due to unsatisfactory result as far as the press was concerned !! Much depends on how the team performs against the top two in its group. Saudi Arabia remains a contender for one of the 5 places.

UAE  the gap widens between AFC’s sixth and seventh teams in terms of historic achievements,  performance, and results. Like Saudi Arabia, UAE finished strongly despite some initial fears at the first stages of the second round. Vietnam was challenging strongly and was topping the table until the last round.

Undoubtedly, Ali Mabkhoot remains the icon of the team. A striker that has proven quality and excels in scoring difficult goals. He needs a better supply of quality balls for UAE to stand any chance of qualification.

IRAQ: After a relatively good start in the qualification, the team struggled to beat Bahrain in two attempts, but the win against Iran was precious and gave it a comfortable margin. However, things turned sour in the return legs in Bahrain with the team finding it hard to score even against the minnows of Cambodia. Their solitary goal of the win against Hong Kong came with the courtesy of an own goal by Hong Kong’s defender. Iraq was lucky not to concede a few goals against Iran but that Azmoun goal was enough to drop Iraq to second and qualify for the next round. The performance of the second round does not augur well for Iraq. It will be a struggle and the chances of advancing to the finals of the World Cup for the first time since 1986 (35 years ago). The squad has some good players such as Bashar Resan and the veteran keeper Jalal Hassan Hashim looks sharp and agile. The defense has lots of gaps and was easily penetrated by most of the opponents. In the forward line, Mohanad Ali looked labored and isolated hence struggling to deliver mainly due to poor service from the midfield. There is the traditional dissatisfaction with the coach too as the fans are not too happy with the Slovenian head coach Srečko Katanec. Rumors have it that the federation is looking for another open on the bench with just a few months left for the start of the third round.

OMAN: Under Branko Ivankovic, Oman has navigated their group with ease except for the two defeats against Qatar. The team still lacks consistency, however, as one is not sure which Oman team will turn up for the match. It will be tough going for Ivankovic to repeat his achievement of qualifying for the finals of the World cup with Iran in 2006, this time with Oman. Stronger and more established teams will be too much for Oman.

SYRIA: Out of the lower-ranked team, Syria is probably the best team that can pop a few surprises and perhaps make it to the continental playoff. If this team really applies itself and plays with enthusiasm and fluidity then they are definitely in with an outside chance. There are a few useful players in the squad. Omar Alsouma is a prolific striker and on a good day, he is unstoppable with a good heading ability. In Mahmoud Al Mawas, they have a terrific player who can tear defenders to pieces. Unfortunately, the backline of Syria can be vulnerable and exposed at times. The shock departure of coach Nabil Maâloul is bound to reduce the chances of Syria, the Dark Horse of the third-round qualifiers.

VIETNAM: undoubtedly one of the top progressing football in Asian football. After their gallant display in AFC Asian Cup 2019, they continued their grand show in the FIFA Qualifiers but fell in the last hurdle. The team lacks international experience and ex[posure. The learning curve is tough and at the competition of this level, the big boys will have no mercy. Chances of reaching anywhere near the top of the group are slim but Vietnam can give the oppositions some tough games.

LEBANON: The team barely made the final 12 but not much expected from them. The Lebanese realistically understand that they can not compete with the big boys and the fact that they have made it to play big names is an honor enough for the fans and the players. Like Vietnam, they might not win any games, but they will not be a punching box of their group iether.

Cristiano Ronaldo ‘Level with Ali Daei as highest international goalscorer’ –

Cristiano Ronaldo did the star turn for Portugal in their final Euro 2020 Group F game against France, scoring two penalties in a 2-2 draw. Not only did his goals see Portugal head into the Round of 16 but also saw him achieve yet another goalscoring feat.

Ronaldo has become the joint-top scoring men’s international player of all time, with his two goals taking his tally to 109 goals in 176 matches for the national team, putting him at the top of the list of goalscorers on the international stage, level only with Iran’s Ali Daei.

The superstar is in line to create a few more records during the course of the tournament. With Portugal expected to go deep into the tournament, the 36-year-old is expected to break them.

Meanwhile, The Iranian legend Ali Daei reacted to this feat by posting a message on his personal page on social media after Cristiano Ronaldo equaled his national goals record. “Congrats @Cristiano” he said in the message. ” You have achieved what you deserved. You are a true symbol of perseverance and professionalism, and were born to show the world that you are the best.”

Previously, Ali Daei was the world’s top scorer with 109 goals in 149 national games, but now Cristiano Ronaldo has reached Ali Daei’s record with two goals against France. According to ISNA, Ali Daei deleted this post from his page a few minutes after its publication for unknown reasons.
