Queiroz secret plans leaves Stielike guessing!

Uli Stielike must be scratching his head wondering which team will his counterpart Carlos Queiroz will arrange in Azadi comes Tuesday. The Portuguese coach played 3 different line ups against Qatar, China and Uzbekistan leaving the German coach wondering which game plan he shall deploy.

Queiroz last line up against Uzbekistan must have alarmed quite a few and was bordering high risk for some critics. No one bench 3 of his top players while playing against the top of the table team in away match in a World Cup qualifier! Queiroz, however, did exactly that and to put the icing on the cake, his players won and to make it taste even sweeter, they played one of their finest football in years.

For over 20 minutes in Tashkent, Team Melli was pressing the host, Uzbekistan on the other hand were running out of ideas and short of confidence. The only span of time that the host managed to threaten, but not effectively, was the early minutes of the second half.  After that, Iran regained control, Queiroz masterplan worked like a charm and his players executed it to perfection grabbing all 3 points with this sweet victory away from home.

Whatever the reasons for the constant changing line up by Queiroz (quite uncharacteristic for the ex-Real Madrid and Portugal coach) the man knew exactly what he was doing and that is confirmed by the fact that Iran is heading the table ahead of the other 5 teams.

Queiroz is no stranger to the Koreans battles and thrives in beating the record holders of most Asian team appearances in the World Cup. In the last edition of the qualification, it was that egotistical unwitting South Korean coach Choi Kang-hee who vowed that Carlos Queiroz will have to watch next year’s World Cup in Brazil on television.

The two coaches have traded verbal volleys in the lead-up to that decisive clash in Ulsan and at the end , Choi Kang-hee was the one who ended up watching World Cup on a Samsung TV while Queiroz and the boys was battling it out against the likes of the great Lionel Messi in Brazil.

There is no such animosity between Stielike and Queiroz who have strong mutual respect for each other, however, that does not dilute the intensity of the match in any way.  Stielike must be unsettled trying to figure out what Queiroz is up to tactically. Queiroz putting a lot of thoughts on how to take advantage of the Korean defensive vulnerability, which has conceded 4 goals in 3 matches.

Team Melli is a good shape to grab all the 3 points and looks like the favorite ahead of the World Cup qualifying showpiece event in Azadi. The passionate Iranian fans in the eve of Ashoora could make a big difference too.

Big test awaits Korea in Iran match

By John Duerden

Korea coach Uli Stielike has been fond of saying lately that there are no easy games at this stage of qualification for the 2018 World Cup. This time, the German is definitely correct. The Taeguk Warriors are in Iran for another vital showdown.

Korea has never won in the country ― this is the fourth visit in the space of seven years ― but this would be a good time to start. Both teams have seven points from three games in the final round of qualification so far. Iran sits on top of Group A with a slightly better goal difference. Uzbekistan is third with six points, Syria has four, China one and Qatar has yet to pick up a point. The top two from the six-nation group automatically qualify for Russia 2018.

Stielike boarded the plane at Incheon International Airport on Friday a relieved man. At half-time in Thursday’s game with Qatar at Suwon World Cup Stadium, the visitor was leading 2-1. Second half goals from Ji Dong-won and in-form Son Heung-min gave the host a very important win. It means that a draw at the cavernous Azadi Stadium, which saw 100,000 attend the same fixture between the two teams four years ago, would not be a bad result.

“It’s not just the fact that Iran is a strong team,” said captain Ki Sung-yeung, who scored the opening goal against Qatar and generally had a much-improved game compared to September’s 3-2 win over China and 1-1 tie with Syria. “There is also the altitude which makes it difficult too.”

Tehran lies around 1,200 meters above sea level. There are lots of stadiums around the world that are higher but with limited time to acclimatize, it makes things just that little bit trickier.

Iran, looking to qualify for a first back-to-back World Cup, is going well under experienced coach Carlos Queiroz. The wily former Real Madrid coach has led Team Melli to a win over Qatar, a tie in China and then a fine 1-0 victory in Uzbekistan on Thursday. He rested a few regular starters for that match. Iran should be a little fresher for the big game.

It remains to be seen as to what condition Son Heung-min is in. The Tottenham Hotspur man scored the winning goal against Qatar. It was his sixth goal in six games ― the 24 year-old is one of the most in-form players in the world right now. Yet he took a little punishment from the Qataris and left the stadium with his ankle wrapped in ice. A precaution, said the staff, but he has played a lot of football lately.

Hong Jeong-ho will miss the game as he was harshly sent off on Thursday. That will leave his fellow defenders to deal with the threat of another of Asia’s big stars in Sardar Azmoun. The striker is hugely talented and has been linked with a move to Arsenal (the big London rivals of Son’s Spurs). At the moment, the striker, 21, plays his club football in Russia but a move further west is not far away.

Names such as Masoud Shojaei and Andranik Teymourian will be familiar to Korean fans who have grown accustomed to facing Iran on a regular basis. The big absence is the legendary midfielder Javad Nekounam who scored the winning goal in Tehran when the two met in qualification for the 2014 World Cup. The Prince of Persia has retired.

The faces come and go but the size of the fixture remains. Korea and Iran have nothing but mutual respect for each other. Whichever teams wins on Tuesday will take a major step towards the World Cup. Tehran will be no place for the faint-hearted.

Religious leaders: “Turn Azadi into Azadari (Mourning) place”

Team Melli players and fans are in  real dilemma for Tuesday’s game against South Korea in the 4th round of the FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifiers.

Tuesday is Tasooa and the following day Ashoora is commemorated by Shi’a Muslims as a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Imam Hossein ibn Ali , the grandson of Prophet Mohammad at the Battle of Karbala. These days are marked by mourning and no major activities or celebrations are conducted in Iran.

As the FIFA plan for the match against South Korea coincided with Tasooa , Iran’s FA requested a change of date as a sign of respect for the mourning periods in the Shia Islamic calendar. FIFA , AFC and South Korea all refused the Iranian request due to the busy world football calendar , a decision which put a lot of pressure on the football administrators and the IRIFF headed by Mehdi Taj who was in an unenviable position.

After it was clear that the game must go ahead as schedule, the president of IRIFF declared that his federation is under the command of the government and will obey any directive. Iran refusal to play the match, technically considered a withdrawal, would have been excessively costly and virtually would have signaled the end of the competition for Team Melli as the ruling body FIFA could disqualify Iran from the World Cup for withdrawing from a match. It also would have wiped all the 3 matches result.

The situation created an immense pressure on the government of the pragmatist President Hassan Rouhani. His opponents, the religious hardliners, found it an opportunity to discredit him and accuse his administration of showing disrespect to the Imam and bowing to foreign external (…) pressure!

The hapless IRIFF executives, the players, who could only observe in silence and the media, were all nervously awaiting the verdict on the match and whether the hardliners, a very small group in numbers but powerful and actively backed by Ayatollah Khamanei, would have their way by ushering the crowds to Hosseinia (mourning places) instead of Azadi stadium.

Sanity prevailed at the end, and the match was allowed to go on as per schedule. The hardliners and the religious hierarchy realized that they would be committing a grave mistake if they stood against playing the match. If Iran pulled out of the match and subsequently disqualified from the world most prestigious football competition, the history would have never forgotten that neither would have the passionate football loving fans. The popularity of the religious factions in Iran, already on shaky ground and beaten in many battles especially after the Nuclear Treaty with the west, would have dipped even further if Team Melli was victimized. Simply said, there was far too much at stake on one single football match.

Not entirely content with defeat however, the religious hierarchy is warning against any chants that express joy or enjoyment during the game on Tuesday and instead they are urging the crowds in Azadi to turn it into black and conduct the traditional azadari (mourning) instead of singing and chanting for Team Melli!

The Imam Juma of Tehran who leads the Friday sermon declared that he will be watching the crowd action very closely for any inappropriate behavior in Azadi that would be disrespectful to the memory of Imam Hossein. For all intents and purposes, that means any signs of joy normally associated with scoring a goals is deemed an insult and disrespectful.

It is one very complicated situation the like of it has never occurred in Tehran Azadi stadium. The illustrious and passionate Iranian fans have always adapted and normally carry a few tricks up their sleeves. Leaders of the fans, no doubt will be closely watched by the secret police and religious minders, would be urged and pressured to exercise azadari (mourning) rituals and the fans to follow them.

 What about the players?

Although none of them would like to be targeted by the religious hard-liners, however, even if they do celebrate scoring a goal or two, they would hardly be considered traitors to the cause while playing for the country. The religious hard-liners in Iran are mostly a pressure group in the parliament and unlike the Saudi extremist wahabis , the Shia equivalents are non-violent and much more savvy and wary of the public sentiments.

UZBEKISTAN 0-1 IR IRAN

Tashkent

Tashkent: A Jalal Hosseini header ended Uzbekistan’s 100% record in third round qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup as Islamic Republic of Iran defeated the Central Asians 1-0 in Tashkent on Thursday.

Uzbekistan came into the tie on the back of 1-0 wins over Syria and Qatar, but Hosseini’s goal on 27 minutes proved the difference maker as Carlos Queiroz’s team picked up their seventh point in three games to remain unbeaten so far.

Samvel Babayan’s side tried to respond in the second half but having lost playmaker Server Djeparov to injury just before the break, the White Wolves failed to breakdown a stout Iranian defence and suffered their first defeat of the qualifying campaign.

“I think we deserved this victory,” said Queiroz. “Uzbekistan also played well, but they controlled the ball in their area. We tried to go on the counterattack when we took ball.

“We didn’t give many chances to Uzbekistan. They didn’t show their usual performance, and that was to our advantage. We blocked them every time they had dangerous shots and I congratulate my team on this positive result.

“I think the battle for the World Cup will continue. We took three points today, but we need more victories and points. It is just one more step towards our target. If any team makes any mistake in Tashkent they will lose.”

Uzbekistan went into the game without captain Odil Akhmedov due to his inability to recover from injury, while Queiroz made a raft of changes to his midfield and attack with an eye on the crunch match with Korea Republic on Tuesday.

One of those changes, Reza Goochannejhad, could have opened the scoring inside 10 minutes but he sliced his volley high and wide after he was picked out inside the area by full-back Ramin Rezaeian’s fine cross.

Iran did go in front before the half hour mark, though, as centre-back Hosseini connected with a smart header from Masoud Shojaei’s inswinging free-kick from the right that left goalkeeper Aleksandr Lobanov helpless.

The hosts suffered a further blow five minutes before half-time as two-time AFC Player of the Year and captain on the night Djeparov was withdrawn from the field in a great deal of discomfort to be replaced by Alexander Geynrikh.

Uzbekistan begun the second period strongly and pushed forward in search of the leveller but struggled to penetrate the Iran backline.

Inside the final 20 minutes, substitute Jaloliddin Masharipov was brought down on the edge of the area in a hugely promising position but Geynrikh’s free-kick summed up Uzbekistan’s night as it hit the wall and rebounded away harmlessly.

And Iran could have ended the match even more comfortably as Sardor Azmoun, a second half replacement for Ghoochannejhad, played in Vahid Amiri but Lobanov was quick off his line to deny the midfielder, but Queiroz’s team still managed to see out the remaining minutes unscathed.

“Unfortunately we lost the game,” said Babayan. “The players tried to battle until the end of the match, but we couldn’t create chances without Akhmedov. We created some moments, but the team didn’t realise them. Now we have the next game and we need to pay attention to it.

“We lost the fight in the first 30 minutes tonight. Besides that, we couldn’t create any chances through the middle and those were the main reasons for our defeat tonight. We can’t play well in midfield without Akhmedov. Our defenders played well, but we lost many battles in the centre.”

Full marks for Team Melli vs. Uzbekistan

Team Melli shared the top of the table in Group A of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers 2018 after beating Uzbekistan 1-0 in the capital city of Tashkent. The lone goal of the game came from a header by Seyed Jalal Hosseini from an immaculate free kick by the rejuvenated Masoud Shojaei.

Iran and South Korea are both on 7 points after the third round of the qualifiers with Uzbekistan following closely on their heels with 6 points.

Queiroz , who must have been disappointed with the last two games of Team Melli made a major change in the starting line up. Dejagah , Azmoun , Teymourian were all benched, in their places Amiri, Taremi and Ghoochannejad started the match.

Despite the solidly built defensive team, Iran was in fact the side that took the initiative and for over 20 minutes attacked the host not allowing a single coordinated attack on Biravand goal in the process. Team Melli could very well have been 1-0 up in the first 15 minute except for the narrow miss by Ghoochannejad.

Before the half hour, Team Melli scored from a beautiful set play and an immaculate cross by  Masoud Shojaeui. The midfielder who was carrying the Captain’s armband for the first time , sent his perfect free kick from the left flank towards the box where Jalal Hosseini met it with a powerful header past the hapless Lobanov.

The first half ended 1-0 for Team Melli .

In the second , the home side took the initiative but all to no avail. Alireza Biranvand, excellent on crosses, hardly had any save to make during the half and the match for that matter. Iran’s defence marshalled by Hosseini and the excellent Pouraliganji was more than a handful for the Uzbek players who could not pass Go! The only question mark was the form of Milad Mohammadi who seemed to be uncertain and occasionally wild at some of his plays.

Carlos Queiroz introduced Azmoun , and Jahanbakhsh in the 2nd half and the duo’s substitution nearly produced a goal to increase Iran’s lead. Finally Teymourian was introduced to solidify the midfield defensive power.

It was an excellent performance by Team Melli. Much more slick ball movement and smoother touches while the number of fruitless crosses decreased significantly against the towering Uzbek defenders.

The next match at Azadi on Tuesday against South Korea will clarify the shape of the qualification.

Uzbekistan v. Iran : match preview

This is hardly a do-or-die match for Team Melli, nevertheless a crucial one in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers double header.  They don’t come more difficult than that as the first match tomorrow in Tashkent is against table leader Uzbekistan with maximum points from two matches, followed by a home game on Tuesday against their nemesis, South Korea.

Iran is setting comfortably between these two opponents in the table with 4 points, a narrow defeat in Tashkent will not be the end of the road, but a good result in Azadi is crucial.

Queiroz has managed to build a solid back line and his defensive mentality has served the team quite well so far. However, this team needs winners as it needs to score goals. The ingredients are there but what is lacking though is a game plan that can surprise the opponents most of whom are so familiar with Queiroz mentality and can so neutralize Team Melli with ease.

In fairness to the coach, it is difficult to blame him entirely for the futile offence as the feeding of balls to the forward line has been seriously flawed. Ashakn Dejagah , who is the midfield dynamo and a player that the team depends on so strongly in midfield has not been firing on all cylinders. He lacked precision and seemed to run short of ideas at crucial moments. Ezatolahie who has shown a remarkable progress in his club still could not run the midfield with the efficiency that senior players can. Teymourian will be too occupied with his defensive duties and would not venture too deep either.

So, it is left to the qualities of the balls from the flanks to create much of the offensive weapons where Sardar Azmoun will be waiting and fighting the battle against the tall and strong Uzbeks. Mentioning Sardar, who has been a true revelation for Iran, he really needs to be at his best in these two matches

It is all a question of will. Does Queiroz have the guts to surprise the Uzbek at their own home or will he maintain his cautious approach? Most probably it will be the latter with the Portuguese coach who is much more comfortable holding back rather than venturing forward.

Samvel Babayan, Uzbekistan
“Thursday’s game see us come up against the group favorites. They are the number one ranked team in Asia and they have many high level players playing at European teams. But we have studied Iran very well and we will try to show good football.

“They are all strong teams at this stage of qualifying. For example, Syria showed a good performance against both us and Korea Republic in the first two matches. Each game we play becomes the most important game at this stage. But we are thinking only of Iran now. We watched many of their games and we will try to find way to beat them. My players are ready for any situation in the match and our aim is to win.”

iran-v-uae_coach Queiroz

Carlos Queiroz, Iran
“We will play against the best team in our group on Thursday. Uzbekistan won their first two matches and are leaders in Group A. Nonetheless, my team will try to secure the win for the Iranian people. My team is clearly improving year on year. When I began to work in Iran we had only one player playing for a European side, now we have 11 who are at various clubs in Europe.

“[Ashkan] Dejagah and [Alireza] Jahanbakhsh were injured some time ago, but they have recovered and are ready to play against Uzbekistan. It is good news for Iran and bad news for Uzbekistan. Of course, Iran has star players aside from those two, we are a team not individuals, and we have no player selection issues for the game.”

Sardar Azmoun injury concern.

Team Melli center forward Sardar Azmoun was injured and taken to hospital by an ambulance during Friday’s match between FC Rostov vs. Krylya Sovetov Samara in the Russian Premier League.

Sardar was substituted in for Dimitry Poloz in the 64th minutes. Rostov won 2-1 to climb the table to 4th place with 10 points from 6 matches.

Early report indicates a suspected injury to the arm, however no confirmation was given on his status. FC Rostov will be meeting Bayern Munich in their first ever appearance in the UEFA Champions League group stages.

Team Melli’s next game will be away to Uzbekistan on the 6th October in Matchday 3 of the FIFA WC Russia 2018 third round qualifiers. Iran is in the second place behind leaders Uzbekistan with 4 points. The Uzbek has two victories against Syria and Qatar.

Facing the truth against China.

It is no use escaping the fact that Team Melli victory against Qatar was a combination of a stroke of good luck, which in fact Iran deserves, and failure of the opposition focus. Qatar played a very well organized match and could have easily scored a goal or two during the match. They had pace, solid defense and individual skills to trouble Team Melli. However, they ended up losing the match due to a killer mistake  by the keeper, who gifted the goal to Iran in the 94th minute of the match.

2194174_SINA2542

A brief analysis of the match on why Team Melli failed to perform up to expectation indicates some critical failure by the team management in preparing the team. The team played under incredible psychological pressure from the media, the federation and worse than all, from the Head coaches himself. It is prudent to say that this is a young team with players in their early twenties playing in front of 80,000 passionate fans. So that immense pressure was boiling even before that match started.  Hyping players has become a standard practice in the modern sports. It is a work of science and a domain for the professionals in sport psychology. in Team Melli , this role is carried out by Carlos Queiroz who is far from being anywhere near a professional in this field.

The man sets the worst example for bad case of anger management, lack of self-control and loss of composure during matches.  His TV interview where he was talking as if Iran is prepare for a war against an enemy , is a clear evidence that this man does not have the tools to suitably prepare his players mentally & emotionally.  The players felt that pressure from the start and subsequently did not perform anywhere close to their last three games, when there was little or no pressure.

2194175_SINA2623

Time and again , Iran has failed in mentally preparing a good team for the major tasks. Over-hyped emotion and prayers have been engaged where the situation requires methodical and systematical means of mind control.

Fortunately for Iran, in Shenyang Olympic stadium, that psychological pressure will not there. In fact, in a role reversal, it is the Home team who will endure such pressure. China has to deliver after their narrow 2-3 loss on the opening day to South Korea, A good result against Asia’s top team is demanded by the fans and media in China. Only a win can be satisfactory for a country that has invested hugely in the club football, especially in the last few years.

57344534_Amir-Kholousi-20

China showed much grit and determination against South Korea, Like Qatar they were the unlucky losers but unlike Qatar, their lapse of concentration was not momentarily but lasted much longer resulting in conceding of three goals. It is there where Team Melli can hit the Chinese. The far and few scoring chances must be effectively taken.

Queiroz needs to put his house in order, too. No rhetoric of his or his coaching staff can hide the fact that Iran has performed poorly against Qatar and an enormous task is needed to come out of Shenyang with points.

The lineup needs changing. Rezaeian was clearly short of form and idea against Qatar. Taremi lost in the forward line and the middle of the field needs a serious change of game plan, tactics and perhaps players. Dejagah and Ezatollahei were good but could not influence the match nor produce enough balls to feed the forwards. Teymourian was excellent in his role as a defensive midfielder while Jahanbakhsh was not so prominent. The addition of Mehdi Torabi will strengthen the midfield.

In defense, apart from one heart stopping blunder by Biranvand when he completely missed the ball on a cross against Qatar, he was generally fine and dependable. That same cannot be said about the central defense. Hosseini, the most experienced of the players is slow and can be easily intimidated. Montazeri suffers from lack of pace like his partner.  There is a dire need of a solid and fast defender, which Iran fortunately has in the form of Morteza Pouraliganji. The Al Sadd defender has the added advantage of playing in the Chinese professional league so his experience will be that more valuable. The team should not defend deep against China because the shortage of pace in Iran’s defense could prove costly for Team Melli.

57344533_Amir-Kholousi-18

Azmoun still remains the top choice for the front line, but Taremi has to go on the bench allowing Queiroz to add to his midfield power by selecting Torabi , Ebrahimi or Shojaei.

A win for Team Melli is certainly possible. They are the better team, no doubt but they need to prove it. It will be a close match.

Last minutes goals ensures a winning start for Team Melli

Team Melli defeated Qatar 2-0 in Azadi stadium in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2018 Qualification rounds. Two goals from Reza Ghoochannejad and Alireza Jahanbaksh in the added times of the match , ensured Iran grabs all the 3 points and heads the group on goal difference.

In a tightly balanced match , the players of both teams failed to break open each others defences and at the end of the match they seemed to be content with a draw. Qatar would have been the much happier side with one point.  However , a sudden turn of events, a momentary lack of concentration  turned things around.

When the referee announced a 6 minutes added time , it was ominous for the Qataris. Their usual or in fact,  classical time wasting and faking injury bounced back against them.

A serious blunder by Qatar goalkeeper Amine Lecomte-Addani in the 94th minute when he gifted Ansarifard with a ball which the Iranian Forward subsequently lost from a tackle by Qatar defender , the ball conveniently reached Reza Ghoochannejad lurking to the left and the sub forward finished  in style for the Azadi to explode in celebration.

The match was stopped for 5 minutes after the goal when the Qatari bench players entered the pitch followed by the Iranian bench. Following a pandemonium and eventually when sanity prevailed , the excellent Sri Lankan referee whistled for re-start and the goal stood. One minute after re-start of the game , Ando Teymourian sent a delightful ball to Alireza Jahanbaksh on the right flank. The winger dribbled past two defenders before sending his shot to the extreme right of the hapless Qatar keeper to score Iran’s second with this killer punch.

The match was never easy for Iran against a solid and highly organized defense.

vlcsnap-2016-09-01-23h51m11s133

Qatar proved to be a tough opponent for Team Melli as the Persian Gulf nation managed to frustrate the host from the first half.  It was balanced half with both teams having chances to score but the finishings left a lot to be desired

Team Melli midfield despite the good performance by Dejagah and Ezatollahie ,  could not influence the match nor properly feed the two forwards Azmoun and Taremi.  The few good balls sent by the duo were all wasted due to the poor finishing and some wayward shots into goal from. Jahanbakhsh was a shadow of himself on the right flank ,  which did not help the team while the left flank saw the better side of the team with Dejagah and supported by the excellent Hajsafy.

The defense of Team Melli was solid however the temperament Jalal Hosseini is worrying , while the slowness of Montazeri was telling.  Hosseini would easily get frustrated, and despite being the oldest and most senior players , he was far from exemplary in his actions. Ramin Rezaeian, who incidentally has not played a single league match this season and is club-less,  was awfully short of form and perhaps the worst player of the half along with Taremi

speaking of temperaments, the match threatened to boil over near the end of the half as Qatar frustrated team Mell, while the Iranian players took their frustration in form of protesting or committing uncalled for silly fouls.

Hassan Al Haydoos , the Qatari winger gave Iran defense some real test and was quite a handful.

Not much changed in the second half except that Team Melli were getting more frustrated , playing in haste and in angry mood. Qatar players were content in wasting time, hitting Iran on the counter and closing their defense by packing the midfield and inside the box.

Perhaps it was a heartbreak for Qatar , but they only have themselves to blame for loss of concentration

This was the most precious three points that Team Melli has gained in many years. A real releif for Carlos Queiroz and 80,000 fans in Azadi.

Qatar heartbreak

Team Melli in full readiness to face Qatar.

Team Melli continued training for the first match of round three of FIFA’s World Cup 2018 qualifier against Qatar on Thursday first of September.
While Queiroz was masterminding his game plan against the tough Qatari opposition some of his players and many other ex-players were pleading with the fans to fill the stadium to help frighten the  Qatari team!!!!
Many seem to believe that it is the fans that will be the major factor in defeat of Qatar rather than the traditional game plan and players competence. Strangely enough , Javad Nekounam who is in the coaching team of Team Melli is one of those who seem to believes more in the fans power than players skill!!!

Indeed it is a strange and uncharacteristic attitude by the veterans like Nekounam , Parvin and Monajati indicative of the fact that  these people undermining the ability of Team Melli players who are well capable of beating the Qatari’s on the field even without the vocal support of the fans.
Meanwhile Qatar flew to Tehran on a Chartered flight and will be conducting their only training session on Wednesday afternoon at Azadi stadium. Qatar coach Uruguayan José Daniel Carreño has a full strength team at his disposal.

Carreño believes that his team is well capable of shocking the host or at least getting a point. He denies that he will be looking at a solely defensive game plan, however he has made it clear that the defense of his team will be a major factor in the result.
