Team Melli chances in World Cup 2014

After 3 matches in Europe in addition to the Guinea match in Tehran, the picture is quite clear on where Team Melli stands in regard to its chances, the strategy and game plans that Queiroz will deploy in Brazil.

It is almost certain that Queiroz strategy will be based on defense. Tight defenses, even down to parking the bus, tight marking, defending from deep and dependence on counter-attack to score a goal or two.

“We shall not concede” is the war cry for Queiroz to his players.

Who is the no 1 goalkeeper?

Since Mehdi Rahmati left Team Melli on his own accordRahman Ahmadi, many feared a gap developing at a critical time of the qualifiers. Rahman Ahmadi answered the call and in fact, did very well to become one of the key players who guided Team Melli to the finals of the World Cup. There will be two more keepers in the team beside Ahmadi, but none of them can be compared to the Sepahan keeper.   Daniel Davari short stint with the team has been nothing but embarrassment conceding goals that no goalkeeper at this level should concede. The latest was the very soft goal against Angola where he was a spectator when the ball was headed in the net. Sousha Makani has not featured much in the team but at club level he has been both brilliant and a calamity. Haghighi’s standard is really unknown since very few people in Iran have seen him play en force.

The quality of defense

Celebrating Hosseini goal, Shojaei, Nekounam & MahiniDefensive strategy is hardly a pretty thing to watch and for the perfectionist, it’s a game killer. Realistically speaking though, Queiroz can only play with the cards on hands and what players he has, seems to fit his plans well. With number of solid defenders in Hosseini , Sadeghi or Montazeri , Heydari , Pooladi or Beikzadeh and a strong goalkeeper in Ahmadi at the back It seems that this line can do the job well. With Nekounam and Teymourian admirably doing the defensive midfield work, Team Melli can be pretty assured of possessing a quality defensive system.  On paper, Iran has a reliable defense capable of holding the onslaught that the opposing teams might deploy on them. Although It is doubtful if any of the 3 teams will use an all-out attack game plan on Iran, not unless they are a gambling lot.

The midfield Dynamos.

Ashkan+Dejagah+Thailand+v+Iran+ryt8sxka6Ycl  The most senior, high profile or experiences Team Melli players in the squad are mostly the midfield Players. The Captain Javad Nekounam , with 142 caps and 37 goals in his 14 years of Team Melli service, Andranik Teymourian, 78 Caps and 9 goals form the core of the Midfield holding (defensive) system but very well capable of attack and shooting from long range.  Haghighi and Haddadifar are also capable backups in case they are required. Nekounam and Teymourian have a good understanding of each others role as they have been playing beside each others for years. In attacking sense, Ashkan Dejagah and Masoud Shojaei will be carrying out the duties on the flanks while several other options are available for Queiroz to enhance these two depending on the type of plan he has in mind. Khalatbary , Hajsafy and Rahmani are fine option when needed.

for Team  Melli, Ashkan Dejagah has been a true revelation since he made his debut in Oct 2012. He has added quality, finesses and class in the midfield. His scoring record is not bad either with 4 goals in 13 games. He can be the player that may very well make the difference. The same cannot be said about Masoud Shojaei though. After a long term lay off due to a series of injuries and operations, Masoud never seemed to fully recover to return back to his old level. Target of boo boys in Azadi , The midfielder has not convinced many critics that he is a regular starter for Team Melli. However , as seen in the practice matches, Masoud has still some magic left in his legs which can benefit the team.

How good are the forwards?

The answer is that they are good enough; however, like any expert will tell you, the effectiveness of the forwards is greatly dependent on the overall plan of the team.

Who can score for Team Melli?

Nowhere, in the 4 matches played, was there anKArim Ansarifardy sign of potent offensive strategy, although Team Melli has the potential to inflict damage to any of the teams in the group with the players in hand. Ashkan Dejagah coming from behind the lone forward can be effective and score goals.  His individual skills, explosive runs, accurate and powerful shooting are all attributes that augurs well for the Midfielder cum winger that helped him score many goals in his career. In the central forward position, be it Ghoochannejad or Ansarifard in the lone striker role, both the players have a proven record of prolific scoring. In case these two players fall short, Queiroz has the chance to introduce the yet unproven qualities of Jahanbakhsh or Azmoun. Both these youngsters lack any experience at top level, but their youthful energy and audacious tactics, can possibly yield some results. Their lack of experience could be an advantage in situations where senior players shy away from making some moves, but the younger ones would give it a go.

Further back Teymourian and Nekounam despite being the holding (Defensive) midfield players, both have lethal long range shooting ability and both have scored spectacular goals. Nekounam’s scoring record for Team Melli is a source of pride. The only doubt in the scoring department is Masoud Shojaei. Not known for his scoring skills, he has been pretty average and hardly replicated his earlier career moves and dazzling displays.  Shojaei’s chances of scoring based on his record and performance of late, is pretty remote.

Defenders of Team Melli have also shown some remarkable scoring record. In fact both the two goals scored in the last of Iran’s World Cup in 2006 were scored by defenders, Golmohammady and Bakhtiyarizadeh.

There used to be a prolific scoring pair in Team Melli, but not in the forward line. Aghli and Hosseini , at one stage , scored more goals than the forwards did in Team Melli. Aghili is no more there but Hosseini is still there doing a sterling role in the central defense and also quite a good job at set pieces. Hosseini is a definite favorite to score and will be targeted by his teammate especially at corners. To replace Aghili’s scoring ability, Team Melli still has a defender who is very well capable of scoring with his explosive headers. He is Amir Hossein Sadeghi.

 Any surprises?

Football is a strange game. Mostly predictable but sometimes it does not run according to the script. Perhaps the Portugal North Korea’s match is still fresh in the minds of many World Cup fans where the Asian representative was blown apart by 6 goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates in 2010. Further back, it is also difficult to forget the humiliation that Germany inflicted upon a lackluster and pathetic Saudi Arabian team in World Cup 2002 by 8 goals with mercy.  Team Melli falling apart in this manner is highly unlikely. The strong mindset and character of Iranians is one shield against such occurrence. The fighting spirit of the Persians is a trademark and Team Melli has proudly replicated the spirits at many stages, especially when they were in challenging situations.

Teymourian: Playing against Iran won’t be easy

FIFA.com

“No game is going to be easy for us,” midfielder Andranik Teymourian said at a training camp in eastern Austria. “But playing against Iran is not going to be easy for any of our opponents.”

Iran start their fourth World Cup  against Argentina, Nigeria and Bosnia-Herzegovina in Group F. They have never made it past the first round and are widely predicted to struggle this time.

Iran won just one point at their last appearance – thanks to a draw against Angola – at Germany 2006. Their previous tournaments were in 1978 and 1998. They have a record of one win, two draws and six defeats from nine World Cup matches.

They head to Brazil, however, having topped their Asian qualifying group ahead of Korea Republic – a fact the players will not let anyone forget.

“This shows the enormous fighting spirit shown by the players, proven in the qualifiers, and the fact that we could qualify is an absolutely tremendous achievement for our team and I personally hope that we can be one of the favourites also,” said Teymourian.

NEC player Alireza Jahanbakhsh said: “That’s like a window for all the world, all the countries can see it, so we’re going to be our best and get a result in the World Cup.”

The first test will be against Nigeria on 16 June.

“I think it’s going to be a tough battle,” said defender Steven Beitashour, a 2012 MLS All-Star player, now with the Vancouver Whitecaps. “If you can start off the World Cup right and get the win, I think you have a good chance of getting to the next round.”

Latest injury list of Team Melli players.

Team Melli is preparing for the friendly game against Angola in TSV Hartberg Fußballstadion, Hartsburg tomorrow with a list of players with injury concerns.

Andranik Teymourian , Jalal Hosseini , Khosrow Heydari and Mehrdad Pooladi were all given a day off from the training after they sustained minor injuries in the Montenegro match. The tough tackling players from Montenegro also had another more serious victim in Hashim Beikzadeh whose destiny is still not clear.

It is not clear if any of the players on the injury list will be available for the Angola match. The match will be the last opportunity for Carlos Queiroz to finalize his 23 players list. Assuming that all the injured players are on the final list , Queiroz might opt to rest them or use them as substitutes.

The FFIRI website announced that the doctors examined Hashim Beikzadeh closely and determined that there is a very good chance that his injury can be cured by the start of the World Cup 18 days from now, however the left back will have to fly to Brazil ahead of the squad to receive some treatments at the hand of Brazilian specialist probably at Corinthians FC Medical Facility.

The rest of the players are all injury free and continued their regular training.Beikzadeh walking with Heydary

Querioz “We will finalize the list on June 1st.”

Carlos Queiroz has announced that his final 23 players list for the FIFA World Cup 2014 tournament will be announced on June 1st a day before the FIFA deadline.

The team is currently in Austria on a training camp with one match remaining to be played against Angola on Friday 30th May. FIFA requires all finalists to submit their 23 strong player list by the 2nd of June. Team Melli has 28 players currently in the camp which means that Queiroz has to cross out 5 names from the list in Austria and a total of 7 from the original 30 players list.

The most likely candidates for not making the list to Brazil are

1) Mohammadreza Khanzadeh  2) Reza Haghighi  3) Ahmad Al Nemeh  4) Sousha Makani 5) Mehdi Sharifi 6)Reza Nourozi 7) Alireza Biranvand. Hashim Beikzadeh , might very well be crossed out if his injury sustained during yesterday’s match against Montenegro is serious. In that case , Ahmad Ale Nemeh might be the replacement for the Esteghlal left back.

Iran ace underlines importance of Nigeria clash

Iran national team’s star, Ashkan Dejagah, is looking forward to Super Eagles’ clash against Scotland on Wednesday in London, which will take place at the ground of Dejagah’s club, Fulham.

Although Dejagah himself is currently preparing with Team Melli in Austria, the Iranian winger shared his opinion about the upcoming Nigeria’s friendly with his club’s website. The former Wolfsburg midfielder has assured that Iran players will be watching the match together, as their World Cup’s opening group stage clash against Super Eagles in considered as the most important encounter by the Asian side.

“I’m sure Iran will send some people and scouts to watch this game. It’s an interesting game and it’s nice because it’s taking place at Craven Cottage and there’s bound to be a great atmosphere”, Dejagah told fulhamfc.com. “If we don’t have training, perhaps our manager [Carlos Queiroz] will ask us to watch this game together as a squad.”

“I think it’s [Nigeria against Iran] a big game for both of us because it’s our first game in the group. It’s the most important game to take some points and I think Nigeria are a good team. “It will be difficult to play against them because the African teams are very physical and very strong but we have time to be ready and to work hard to prepare for the tournament.”

In Dejagah’s opinion, all three teams apart from big favourites Argentina – Nigeria, Iran and Bosnia – have equal chances to get past the group stage. “I think Argentina will go through but the other three teams also have a chance so we will try our best and we will see. Our first game is the most important game because if we start well we have a good chance to go through.” Iranian team will be having a day off on Wednesday, as Carlos Queiroz’ men face Montenegro tomorrow (May, 26th) and Angola on Friday (May, 30th).

Match Review : Iran vs. Montenegro

On Monday , Team Melli will be facing the most serious opponent in its humble low-key series of friendlies when they meet Montenegro. The ex-Yugoslav country is relatively new member of world football community, nevertheless , they have shown some good promise and results,

During the World Cup 2014 qualifiers, Montenegro was grouped along with England, Ukraine , Poland, Moldova and San Marino. While England qualified directly at the top of the group , Ukraine came second and lost to France in the play-off. Montenegro was placed a respectable 3rd ahead of once mighty and more experienced Poland.

Iran and Montenegro have never met at international level before.

The match on Monday at the TSV Hartberg Fußballstadion, in Hartberg Austria , will probably be the first match where Queiroz has the luxury of fielding his strongest side which includes the legionnaires Dejagah , Ghoochannjad , Shojaei , and Davari. Those players joined the camp later than the rest. However, being a friendly match, changes or at least 6 of them is a forgone conclusion in the match.

In the Belarus game, fatigue was evident on the Iranian players. According to the sources close to the camp, the tough physical training has continued in Austria where it has left of in South Africa. This has obviously  taken its toll during that match. With Queiroz betting on the high physical preparation of his players as a tool to counteract the more skillful and tactical oppositions in Brazil, it seems that the grueling training regime will continue in the Austria camp. As the result of the first match in the World Cup is so vital , as admitted by both Nigeria and Iran coaches, Queiroz has repeatedly stated that he wants to see a physically robust team. The result of friendlies does not matter to him, as much as the physical strength and players’ stamina. This match should be a good test for Team Melli. A strong defense and solid midfield will definitely make Queiroz much happier and hopeful of positive results in Brazil.

Montenegro does not have a good defensive record as they have conceded 17 goals in the WC qualifiers. That should wet the appetite of Ghoochannejad and co to try their luck at scoring for a change in a team that is shy on scoring.

On Friday , Montenegro lost to Slovakia 2-0 while in March they beat Ghana , one of the World Cup qualifiers,  1-0.

The match kick off time is 18:30 (21:00 Tehran time). A large number of Iranian expatriates fans are expected in Hartberg for the match. The ever loyal fans were present at the last game against Belarus and they created an ideal atmosphere for the boys with their chanting and singing.

IRIB will be broadcasting the match live for the rest of the world.

Football instead of politics

Steger Bach. No one wants to talk about politics here, only about football, the World Cup in Brazil and the “honor of Persia”. The slogan that unites national pride and hope to bring the Iranian soccer team luck and will also be featured on the World Cup bus.

Information

Iranian national football Team (Team Melli)

(af) Team Melli is next to Saudi Arabia, Japan and South Korea one of the strongest Asian football teams. Qualified three times to the finale of AFC Asian Cup (1968, 1972, 1976), all of which were won and became champions. Five times (1980, 1984, 1988, 1996, 2004) in the semi-finals of Asian Cup , three games of them involved  penalty shoot-out losses (1984, 1996, 2004). In addition to four World Cup participation (1978, 1998, 2006 and 2014), the national team qualified three times for the Olympic Summer Games (1964, 1972, 1976).

Even if the Islamic Republic was present in the past few years more by the nuclear issue news headline  and the former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the European media, The Iranians wants their national football team (Team Melli), which has gathered in May for three weeks in Austria for training,  to be in the news.

The daily routine of the 28 nominated players is minutely regulated. In addition to a strict diet and fixed workouts, there are always intermediate dates such as the FIFA doping test or one or the other interview. There are only a few who dare to speak to Western media. Tricky questions by reporters swarming around the camp automatically creates cautious and reserves responses. Apparently no one wants to be put into hot water by discussing controversial issues at home and answer questions by the authorities.

“Football has nothing to do with politics,” is what  the 31-year-old regular player Andranik Teymourian believes when engaged in a scarce conversation with the “Wiener Zeitung” . “But football can create a bridge of friendship,” he adds.

That was a few days ago. About the lack of jerseys of the team that received much exposure by the world ptress and the shrinking after wash. “The issue with the jersey is finished. We have plenty of them here and hope that they will be of better quality in the future,” said Teymourian a key player in the World Cup qualifiers.

“It is difficult,”
“We have been training really hard in this one and a half months, and I believe there never was in the past few years as a national team as now. Nevertheless, we know that it is difficult,” admits the professional. Three friendlies are in those three weeks of the program, one of them being, namely Belarus, already took place and ended in a draw. In this match at Kapfenberg before 1500 spectators,  the Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz almost used his entire squad. Only Daniel Davari and Ashkan Dejagah, who has previously played in the German Bundesliga were not used.

Several hundred of the approximately 30,000 people living in Austria Austro Persians traveled for the first game to support their team Melli. One of them was Arash K. “We have to be present at the games, so that the world sees that Iran has to offer other than the nuclear issue. Iranian national football team is one of the best and strongest teams in Asia. It is therefore self-evident that we qualified for the World Cup in Brazil. On the Fifa ranking of May 2014, we are ranked with 750 points 37th place, “he says with obvious pride. Why the training camp held in Austria, has several reasons. There are good relations between Vienna and Tehran, and it is a good opportunity to force the sports exchanges with Europe.

Jahanbakhsh voted best young talent in the Netherlands.

Rarely has Iran’s football witnessed the emergence of a young player , who is not only talented but has a huge potential to become a star,  as has young Alireza Jahanbakhsh.

You need to cast your mind way back to the late seventies and to a name like Hassan Rowshan to find a player in similar class and situation. Jahanbakhsh is an exciting player , full of energy , bold enough to do whatever he wants, being trying an impossible shoot to dribbling round defenders while other players would opt for a safer options.  Perhaps it is this courage that Carlos Queiroz has been talking about in his ideal players.

From the corridors of a tiny club in Gilan, to the bright light of the Eredivisie , the dutch league that has produced numerous World Class players, a transformation which is far easy.  The Netherlands , not only has its own young and talented players and clubs like Ajax that prides itself in producing quality players who have played in the best European leagues, the Netherlands is also the land of opportunities for the third world countries,   where lessor known African and Latin American players have made their name and then enlightened the other European leagues. Netherlands have been the first stepping stone for many foreign talents some as young as 14 or 15.

jahanbakhsh nec1

But , then comes the boy from a Rasht club who is defying the tradition and culture of Eredivisie. He is Iranian , and by God he is talented young man. The best and most seasoned players from Asian countries had problems settling and playing in Europe, but not this man. Alireza Jahanbakhsh , had to tackle several difficulties , like the language ( he is learning two languages at the same time Dutch and English) , a different culture and environment and of course the pressure of an intensive league in the Eredivisie. With all odds stacked against him , the young Persian prince did not disappoint . He has already showed glimpses of his superb talents , he scored, he assisted and he was one determined player who gave his best in every match he played. He is a man on a mission. It is such a pity that his efforts with NEC was not good enough to maintain the team in the top flight , but Jahanbakhsh single-single-handedly gave his club a stay of execution when he scored two superb goals against the champions Ajax on the final day of the season, this is after he came from the bench. Unfortunately , Jahanbakhsh goals that took NEC to the relegation play off was not good enough as they were beaten in that series.

Despite his limited experience, many experts think that Jahanbakhsh will be in the plane to Rio De Janeiro in June. Even in his raw form , Jahanbakhsh is one talent that no coach can ignore even at the highest level of football.

Now the Dutch haves selected him as the best talented young player in the Eredivisie according to the website http://www.bestevoetballers.nl

The conditions:

The Dutch Eredivisie is a breeding ground for the bigger leagues in Europe. Every season there are a few great talents that are within the ‘lists’ of the big foreign clubs. Who do you think the biggest talent season 2013-2014?
Only players under 20 years old (at the time of starting competition in August so not born August 3, 1993) are eligible for the rankings’ greatest talent 2013-2014. Per club three players. Max You can give each player 1x a seven-day strengths or weaknesses.

  2. Terence Kongolo        7.4
  3. Memphis Depay          7.2
  4. Jean Paul Boëtius      7.1

The website has the following to say about the young Iranian talent.

ABOUT ALIREZA JAHANBAKHSH
Attacking midfielder Alireza Jahanbakhsh is an Iranian footballer who made his professional debut in the 2010-2011 season. He was playing for Damash Karaj which plays in the third division Iran.

After just one season Jahanbakhsh made his move to SC Damash , ateam playig in the top Iranian league. Here he finally breaks through and plays during the 2011-2012 season, 16 league games. In the 2012-2013 season, he is voted the best player Damash and he comes up with 28 games in which he scored eight goals.

In June 2013, the Iranian signs a contract for three seasons at NEC. Technical director Carlos Aalbers discovered the midfielder during a youth tournament in the Emirates (AFC U19 Championship) , and takes him to the Netherlands. Jahanbakhsh could also opt for a transfer to clubs from Russia (Rubin Kazan) and France. The arrival of the Iranian midfielder is made possible by Marcel Horn Book. The investor pays the transfer of several folds for Jahanbakhsh’s NEC salary.

Bleachers Report: Analysing Carlos Queiroz’s Iran

Welcome to the latest edition of our World Cup tactics board, where we look at each nation that has qualified for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

This time around, we’ve studied minnows Iran, led by former Real Madrid and Manchester United stalwart Carlos Queiroz and spearheaded by Fulham attacker Ashkan Dejagah.

Qualifying

The Asian qualifying path to the World Cup is long and unforgiving; it crams many fixtures into a short amount of time, making for an early start and an early finish to proceedings.

Iran were the second Asian nation to seal their place in Brazil after Japan, topping Group A by two points and seeing off the challenge of South Korea (qualified in second) and Uzbekistan.

They lost just twice throughout the campaign and conceded just two goals in their final eight games. They struggled for goals too, scoring an average of just one per game in the final stage and winning most games 1-0.

Four of their players scored three goals during qualifying, though Reza Ghoochannejhad didn’t emerge as a starting option until late.

Formation and Style

Iran play the most defensive 4-2-3-1 formation you’ll see at the finals, with Queiroz preaching discipline, tracking and numbers at the back.

His back four are a genuine back four, with the full-backs only venturing forward for the odd attack and throw-ins. Out of possession, they’re as flat as can be, charged with man-marking the wingers and harassing midfield runners.

Iran sit off the ball-player and mark the midfield

The Persian Stars are happy to sit off the ball when their opponents have it in their own half. Far removed from any form of high-press strategy, opposing centre-backs will have all the time in the world to pick a pass.

The problem is that there are no options, as Iran swamp out the midfield by switching into a deep 4-4-1-1 or 4-1-4-1 and man-mark all outlets. They barely encroach upon ballplayers to pressure and instead decide to present the opposition with no options.

AV
With no one to pass to, SK hit it long. Again.

Inevitably, players get fed up and play longer, riskier passes. Here’s an example from a stifling 1-0 victory over South Korea that sums up the approach.

If the opposition are able to work it forward—via pass, overload or dribble—Iran become snappy and aggressive in hunting down the ball, treading the thin line between firm challenge and foul on a regular basis.

They’re often touch-tight and work incredibly hard to win the ball back, but once they have it, that’s where the problems start.

Offensively, they are stunted, and it doesn’t help when all they do going forward is pass it to Javad Nekounam and hope he can pick out a stunning, incisive long pass.

AV
Iran aggressively pursue the ball as it enters their territory.

Nekounam will always look to the wings first and foremost to release a runner, and Masoud Shojaei has impressed on the left opposite Ashkan Dejagah with his hard running, opportunistic releases and enthusiasm.

Reza Ghoochannejhad has emerged as an opportunistic finisher, with nine goals in 11 international appearances, but how will he cope against the defences of Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Nigeria?

Reasons for Hope

This Iran side is extremely well-drilled. Every player knows his job off the ball and has subscribed to Queiroz‘s way of thinking. He’s renowned as a defensive coach, which didn’t suit Portugal in 2010, but this is the ideal fit.

The defensive unit, led by Seyed Jalal Hosseini, looks settled and competent. Hosseini himself commands an organised back line and barks orders at his full-backs on a regular basis.

Andranik Teymourian, Nekounam‘s defensive midfield partner, is also more than handy and has experience—albeit very limited—in the Premier League.

Dejagah will give them an attacking edge often missing during qualifying, but he’ll be required to make his own chances and finish them himself. Nekounam will make the first pass, but beyond that, it’s up to him.

Mohammadreza Khalatbari is a wild-card substitution capable of winning a game, but he lacks consistency and lost his starting place over the last 12 months.

Reasons for Concern

Iranian fitness levels have always been doubted—a product of most players playing in the low-standard Iranian Pro League—and nothing we’ve seen in 2014 bucks that trend.

With the exception of GhoochannejhadNekounam and Dejagah, you worry about the durability of this side over the course of 90 minutes against Lionel Messi, Edin Dzeko and Emmanuel Emenike.

Said fitness concerns aren’t exactly helped by the kick-and-rush approach taken by Queiroz and his men while attacking, and it’s no wonder they tire, as they rarely ever have the ball.

“Resting in possession,” a la Barcelona, doesn’t have to be taken too seriously by international teams, but the Persian Stars could do with adopting a little bit more patience on the ball. Quality, or a lack thereof, factors in here, of course.

Can GhoochannejhadNekounam and Dejagah break down Argentina, Nigeria and BIH single-handedly? The honest answer, on paper, is no.

Conclusions and Predictions

You’d be mad to back Iran to get out of a very challenging Group F, but that doesn’t mean they’re a walkover.

They don’t scrabble around defensively and block shots with flailing legs a la North Korea in 2010; Queiroz has coached this team to the point that they’re positionally superb off the ball.

While they are expected to eventually yield, don’t expect landslide scorelines and a minus-10 goal difference at the end of the tournament.
