Team Melli squad for European tour announced.

Carlos Queiroz announced the list of 24 players that will form Team Melli squad for the two friendly matches in Europe.

Iran will meet Chile in Austria in then on 31st March Sweden will host Team Melli for a friendly.

As usual, Queiroz has stuck to his tried and trusted names rather than current form. However, the selection of Masoud Hassanzadeh and Habib Gordani has created some glimmer of hope for the aspiring Iranian league players that all is not lost and their good standards and and efforts could be rewarded by Team Melli and will not be totally ignored by the Portuguese coach. Hassanzadeh in particular has been in exceptional form for Zob Ahan and his selection is merited on display and the goals he has scored. The players that keeps being picked for the team despite abysmal display is Karim Ansarifard who has played 12 matches (515 minutes) but has yet to score a goal or provide an assist since joining Osasuna in the second division of the La Liga.

Also missing and presumably for good for Team Melli, is the Sepahan’s winger Mohammadreza Khalatbary who seems to be in the blacklist of Queiroz. The ex-Zob Ahan and Persepolis winger seems to have hit top form with Sepahan this term and scoring freely, yet he is not as good as Anasrifard who is not even getting decent playing time in Spain!

It also seems that the short stint of Mehrdad Steven Beitashour , the Iranian-American is just about over with Team Melli. It was a very quick spell that lasted for short while. Beitashour has been ignored since the last selection in the FIFA World Cup 2014. Daniel Davari , the Iranian-German keeper is also facing the same fate as Beitashour and quickly going into oblivion.

The most significant absentee for the time being is Mehrdad Pooladi who has military service issue and somehow cannot play for Team Melli.

Carlos Queiroz , in a brief news conference at the headquarters of FFIRI , stated that these two matches are quite important for him as it is the last chance to evaluate the standard of his players before the commencement of the FIFA World Cup 2018 preliminaries. Such statement seems to be academic as Queiroz should have a pretty solid idea of the players that he keeps selecting in regular fashion and have been permanent fixtures in the Team Melli squad since he took over the reign of coaching the team.

Queiroz said that the players have been picked according to the their performances in the League!

“For Iran , the FIFA World Cup 2018 starts in 2015 with the qualifying rounds.” Queiroz added.

Veiled criticism of Kaffashian

On Azmoun and Jahanbakhsh , Queiroz said “ We need these two players in Team Melli. Everywhere else in the world, the National Team has the priority over other teams. These two matches are golden opportunity for us and have cost us nothing financially with the sponsorship deals and I intend to take full advantage.”

Ali Kaffashian has announced earlier that both these players will have to be available for Omid Team, despite Queiroz’s strong objection.

Queiroz took a swipe at his boss Ali Kaffashian and sarcastically dismissed his plan and announcement for the Italy match. “When the issue has not been properly addressed nor properly negotiated, one should not publically announce it and create false hope. I am sure that some of you want and hope to take a holiday in the Mediterranean, but if you don’t have money, you cannot claim the trip is canceled. The talk about Italy is nothing but this. ”

“Instead of spending US$ 1.5 million for the Italy game, we can arrange tow high profile friendly games with two teams. Such money can also be spent in the infra-structure of football where it is truly needed like training facilities, ground and beach soccer. (..)”

Queiroz then concluded “My question to you is. What was the benefit of playing Brazil except for destroying the morale of the players after conceding three goals” .

Truly a peculiar justification for not favoring to play against World Class teams like Italy from a coach who considers himself World Class and a master tactician! Queiroz has been known to favor playing against inferior oppositions such as Palestine , Mozambique , Tajikistan and teams way below Team Melli standard and reputation rather than high profile opponents.

War with FFIRI Secretary General looming!

To the surprise and delight of the media , Queiroz opened the subject of a private closed meeting in the FFIRI HQ.

Querioz , a character who never shies from bragging about his background and achievements , said “ I have a 33 years’ experience in football including competing in the World Cup and European Championships. Apparently though, there are some educated people here that know better than me! We had two meetings with Mr. Asadi, the new Secretary General of FFIRI . It was not my intention to speak about these issues, but what I heard from him , forces me to talk about.”

“ The meeting was carried in the presence of Kaffashian with objective of introduction of Mr. Asadi and reviewing future Team Melli plans. However , when I heard Asadi talk , it left me in shock.”

“ I have to say there is a wide gap of differences between me and the secretary general. It seems that I have not even reached his minimum acceptable standard. I need to give myself a few days grace period to go through all that discussion before I react to them.”

“Asadi claimed during the meeting that despite the enthusiasm that I have created around Team Melli and amongst the fans, I have not achieved anything of significance result or performance wise. I have not engaged in force in institution of new and young players to the team to replace the current aging generation, I have also failed to assist and support young coaches, in his opinion.”

“ I find such statements as an insult to my character and reputation. All he has done was to ruin my day and destroy my morale. That is not acceptable for me. I have demanded from Kaffashin to act (…) and do something about Asadi, else working in such environment is not healthy for me and makes my difficult job more like impossible,”

Queiroz then went on talking about the sacrifices that he has carried out for Team Melli’s sake. He went through loads of self-praising deeds, how he had to navigate through the constant difficulties, how he had to fight on several fronts and had to face the critics and several other hardships , just to be in the service of Team Melli. Now, a guy like Asadi is here to ruin all that by his attempt to hurt his morale and reputation.

Omid Team Squad announced

The football federatio0n announced the names of 27 players for Omid team (U23) which will participate in the Qualifying rounds of the Olympic Games Football competition preliminary rounds to be held in 10 days time in Tehran.

After the highly publicized differences between Omid and Team Melli coaches on the availability of Azmoun and Jahanbakhsh , both of the players were named in the squad, however , their availability for the preliminary competition is highly in doubt as they will be in Europe for the friendly internationals against Chile and Sweden. Future availability of the two players will certainly be considered if it does not conflict with Team Melli programs.

Omid team beats Kuwait in a friendly.

Iran’s Omid Team defeated Kuwait Olympic team 1-0 in a friendly match played in Kuwait today (Thursday)
The only goal of the match was scored by Behnam Barzay from a spot kick  after Arsalan Motahari was fouled in the box in the 40th minute of the match..

The result and the performance of Omid Team revived the unsavory events of the Omid Team in Asian Games 2014

Although Iran’s controlled the match from the onset they failed to translate it into goals against a Kuwaiti team that had very little to offer and failed to create even a single scoring chance in the 1st half.

Majid Hosseini , Iran’s best defender was marsheling the defense perfectly well but his dismissal in the 77th  minute  of the match, highlighted a serious flaw in Omid team, lack of pace. Hosseini  was red carded  after two consecutive yellow cards and ironically due to the same reason.
Hosseini despite his superior display against the Kuwaiti players, lacked pace and was easily beaten by the substitute  player  who passed him with ease so Hosseini fouled him for his 1st caution. A few minutes later a similar situation developed and again a Kuwait player dribbled and accelerated past him , again Majid Hosseini fouled and got his 2nd yellow card  and marching orders.

It was apparent from this display that the playing style remains quite similar to the team coached by Vingada’s team that failed to progress past the group stages in the Asian Games Incheaon despite so many changes. Superior ball control and individual techniques failed to yield a satisfactory result with the Omid team forwards failing to score as they deserved.

Omid Team finishing left a lot to be desired against a very ordinary Kuwaiti team lacking in tactics. Time after time , omid players easily reached Kuwait penalty box , but a combination of some heroics by Kuwait keeper and feeble last touches , prevented the players  to convert their superiority into goals much , rekindling the performance of the Asian Games. It was alarming how many time the players missed easy chances to put the game to bed.

There was little change in style and game plan from the last omid team. Mohammad Khakpour has failed to leave any impression on this team , not that much can be expected from a rookie inexperienced coach given a mammoth task.
The passing game and the players finding each other with easy flowing style was quite pleasing but put to test against a team which lacked punch , finesse and certainly is a few steps lower in standard than Iran’s Omid team , the result was concerning.

Omid Team prepare for Kuwait match.

Iran’s Omid team continue the training camp ahead of Thursday’s match against Kuwait Olympic Team ( U23) in Kuwait.

in an interview with Mehr News sport correspondence Mohammad Khakpour , the head coach of Iran’s Omid team (U23)  declared that his team is in a desperate need of full support in order to achieve the aspiration of the football federation and Iranian fans.

“Qualifying for the Olympics needs the cooperation of everyone involved in Iran’s football. Without the full support and with reservations and objections on our requests, I do not think we can achieve such aspiration.” Khakpour said while preparing the team in Kuwait ahead of a friendly match against its Kuwaiti counterpart.

On the status of the camp, Khakpour said “This is our last stage of preparation before the qualifying matches begins. The camp is going fine although we do suffer from the absence of several good players like Moradmand and Cheshmi due to Visa issue reasons (!!).  We have also invited Azmoun and Jahanbakhash but nether of their clubs released them as they are not obliged to under FIFA rules.”

When quizzed by the reporter what is the reason for players’ Visa problem, which should be a routine procedure for any team travelling abroad, Khapour said he was not aware of the procedures and the measures taken by the responsible personnel in the FFIRI to obtain visas. “Both Cheshmi and Mordmand were in the list , but negligence of the staff resulted in their name not being sent to the Kuwait embassy. Abdollahzadeh’s name has always been in the list, and I am thankful that he eventually got the entry Visa at the last minute at the airport.”

Khakpour categorically denied that he had any meeting with Queiroz after Team Melli head coach returned back to Tehran a few days ago.  “The last time I saw Queiroz was about a month and a half ago when Kashani and myself inadvertently bumped into him in the FFIRI offices. At that time he said to us that he cannot release Azmoun and Jahanbakhsh for Omid Team and also mentioned that he himself was not sure of continuing with Team Melli !” Khakpour added. “ We had no meetings with Queiroz since neither was there one arranged since then.”

Asked if his insistence of having these two players and the public commotion that he and Kashani have created would not negatively affect the other team players morale, the head coach of Omid Team defended his stand and said. “At this age level, I do not believe there is a great difference in players’ standards; the only difference is international exposure. I have not made a big deal of the issue of Azmooun and Jahanbakhsh but as the head coach, it was my duty to do whatever I can to secure their services.”

Omid team’s Abdollahzadeh is deported due to management blunder!

A blunder created by Habib Kashani and Mohammad Khakpour , forced Omid Team player Ahmad Abdollahzadeh to be deported from Kuwait after the player arrived in Kuwait without a visa!

Omid Team Coach Khakpour listed Abdollahzadeh in the squad list that was sent to the Kuwaiti authorities for issue in the visa, however , he requested the name of Abdollahzadeh to be dropped due to injury. Subsequently Ahmad Abdollahzadeh was not issued a visa. Somewhere along the line and a few days before the departure of the squad , Khakpour changed his mind and included Abdollahzadeh in the squad.

Without being prudent nor considering the consequences of a person travelling to a foreign country without a visa, Abdollahzadeh boarded the plane along with other members of the squad with the approval of Habib Kashani. Omid Team manager concurred with Khakpour’s decision and vowed to sort out Abdollahzadeh’s nonexistence of a visa on arrival at Kuwait airport!

As expected, Abdollahzadeh was denied entering into Kuwait without a visa and all the hype by Kashani , who thought that by haggling and dealing , he can manage to slip someone in a foreign country without a visa, has miserably failed. The team was left waiting for hours awaiting conclusion of the problem created by Kashani and Khakpour. Eventually , the team was allowed to leave to the hotel while Abdollahzadeh was stuck at Kuwait airport for hours awaiting a flight back to Iran as he was eventually deported.

This is yet another blunder that seems to typify the management of football in Iran. Kashani’s farce promise that he can confidently sort out a player who does not carry a valid visa is archetypical of managers who have unrealistic expectations and at times clueless about the laws and regulations.

For years, Omid team in particular has been the object of so many managerial errors but nothing worse than the last edition when a suspended player was used against Iraq in the qualifying rounds of the London Olympics in the Omid team win in Iraq. The result was over-turned into a loss and subsequently Omid team lost the home game as well and was eliminated. .

The names might have changed but the problems of Omid Team incompetent managers remains the same.

Omid Team is setting up a training camp in Kuwait where two games was originally scheduled to be played. However, one game was cancelled as the Omid team will be playing against its Kuwaiti counterpart on Thursday 12th March 2015.

What is behind the Chile game cancelation talk?

The Iranian football federation financial difficulties and failure to cover the activities of the national teams are old news. Under Kaffashian administration, the FFIRI has suffered chronic financial hardship, lack of resources and failure to create a proper marketing and sponsorship strategy to generate revenue for his federation.

The initial plan to play Sweden was a God send for the FFIRI as the Swedes have taken care of almost all the cost including transportation and accommodation for the Iranian squad and delegation. All that Iran needs to do is to turn up for the match.

A match agent who has a close working relationship with FIFA and Carlos Queiroz wisely proposed an extra match against Chile utilizing the South American’s team presence in Europe for a match against Brazil at the Emirates Stadium in London. Initially the date was agreed and Chile was to play against Iran in Sweden a few days before the Sweden match. As there was some fear by the Swedes that the proposed match with Chile and particularly the result might over shadow the main attraction, the Sweden-Iran match, they objected to the match venue being played in Sweden.

The agent then suggested Austria and presented another verbal proposal which would cost the FFIRI nothing while the agent would retain the match ticket sales income and TV broadcast rights. This proposal was agreed by the FFIRI verbally and a contract was to be sent for approval and signature.

On the presentation of the formal contract, there was a clause about a payment of 75,000 Euros outstanding from the previous camp in Austria that the FFIRI has to settle. On being alerted to the clause, Ali Kaffashian had a change of heart as he is reluctant to pay (!) , hence his quote that the Chile match is not confirmed yet.

The federation has no choice but to pay the bill outstanding for a long time. Unless this bill is settled, there would be no match against Chile in Austria anytime soon.

It is amazing how a football federation that cannot pay a 75,000 Euro bill has the audacity to file to host the most prestigious Asian football tournament and expect to win against the UAE !

Queiroz “Possible cancellation of Chile match is a big blow for Team Melli”

The Portuguese coach of Team Melli Carlos Queiroz has returned back to Iran to select and prepare the team for the two high profile friendly matches against Chile and Sweden in two weeks time.

Rumors have been rife in Tehran about the possible cancellation of the Chile match in Austria because of the customary shortage of funds to cover the cost. Queiroz was confronted by the reports on his arrival about his feelings on such possibility. “It will be a big and major blow for Team Melli if this match is canceled and regrettable if there is shortage of funds. We have all been looking forward for this unique opportunity to play two of the finest teams in the world and if the Chile match is canceled it will be a big psychological blow” Queiroz commented.

Queiroz was also asked about the status of several players and he had these to offer.

“Azmoun and Jahanbakhash are members of Team Melli and are definitely required for the two matches in Europe. This is a big opportunity for them. There is no chance that I will not select them for this trip. It is regrettable that this tour coincides with the Omid team qualifying matches , but once again , both will be required and will be with us in the trip to Europe”

“Mohammad Nouri and Mehdi Rahmati are not Team Melli players and will not be part of the squad to Europe. I have no further comments to offer on the subject. Full stop.”

“The list of Team Melli players will be announced soon and will be starting our preparation from Iran before flying to Europe”

UAE wins AFC Asian Cup 2019 hosting rights

Manama: The AFC Executive Committee decided on Monday to award the hosting rights of the 2019 edition of the confederation’s flagship competition, the AFC Asian Cup, to the United Arab Emirates.

Two AFC Member Associations, the United Arab Emirates Football Association and the IR Iran Football Federation, had submitted final bids to host the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.

The Executive Committee, during its meeting in Manama, Bahrain, awarded the hosting rights following a transparent, detailed and highly competitive bidding process, which began with 11 competing Member Associations.  The decision was based on the respective merits of the bids which covered a range of objective criteria including stadiums, transport, infrastructure, hotels, visas and various other sporting, logistical and administrative issues. The AFC Competitions Committee was involved in all stages of the bid process.

At the end of the meeting, AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa signed the AFC Asian Cup 2019 hosting certificate together with UAE Football Association President Yousuf Yaqoob Yousuf Al Serkal.

AFC President Shaikh Salman said: “I would like to congratulate the UAE Football Association on their successful bid to host the AFC Asian Cup 2019.

“The AFC Executive Committee was convinced by the merits of the UAE bid. I firmly believe that the UAE Football Association will host a tournament that could match and potentially even surpass the stunning AFC Asian Cup 2015 in Australia that we have all just witnessed.”

Kaffashian last minute attempt for Iran’s Asian Cup 2019 hosting.

Ali Kaffashian , the President of FFIRI visited Manama , where he met with the AFC President Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifah in what looked like a last gasp attempt by Kaffashian to persuade the AFC of the advantage that his country holds versus the UAE in hosting the next Asian Cup in 2019.

According to the official FFIRI website, Kaffashian has indicated that the AFC has put forward several points which are considered to be detrimental to Iran chances of hosting the next premiere event of Asian football. The absence of proper TV rights rules, sponsorship deals and facilitation and the right of women to enter Iranian stadiums were considered to be negative points against Iran’s hosting of the Asian Cup.

Kaffashian also stated that the AFC has given his federation an ultimatum about TV broadcast rights payment to the Iranian clubs taking part in the Champions League. Unless there is proper and systematic payment to the 4 clubs in the AFC Champions League, the AFC might withdraw the rights of Iranian teams from participation in next season’s competition.

Interestingly enough, the official AFC website, mentioned nothing about such delicate issues of AFC ultimatum nor the negative points against Iran hosting as stated by Kaffashian. The-afc.com merely published a short news clip of the meeting between Kaffashian and Al Khalifa in what looked more like a Political Bureau of former Communist Party of the Soviet Union statement than anything concrete in relation to Iran’s chances hosting of Asian Cup 2019. In the customary exchange of compliments, the President of the AFC noted that Iran’s development programs should be used as a benchmark for other Member Association currently working to improve standards within their own countries, according to the afc.com while Kafashian took time out to praise Shaikh Salman for the progress and development seen during his time as AFC President.

During the AFC Asian Cup 2015 in Australia, there were news leaks that UAE has won the hosting rights for the Asian Cup 2019 and it was the matter of formalities before the decision is officially announced. The visit by Kaffashian seems to be a frantic attempt towards swaying the votes towards Iran.

Fifa’s Sepp Blatter calls on Iran to end stadium ban for women

Sepp Blatter has asked Iran to end its ban on women watching football matches, describing the situation as intolerable.

“When I travelled to Iran in November 2013, I was not only confronted with huge popular enthusiasm from football but also a law forbidding women from attending football matches,” the Fifa president wrote in the governing body’s weekly magazine. “I raised the topic at my meeting with the president of Iran Hassan Rouhani, and came away with the impression that this intolerable situation could change over the medium term.

“However, nothing has happened. A collective ‘stadium ban’ still applies to women in Iran, despite the existence of a thriving women’s football organization. This cannot continue. Hence, my appeal to the Iranian authorities; open the nation’s football stadiums to women.”

During the Asian Cup in Australia this year, Iran’s support included thousands of women who were free to show up in Australia, without any dress restrictions. Their female supporters also become a big hit with local media, prompting the Iranian authorities to remind the players to be wary of posing for photographs that may be posted on social media.

Iran is bidding against the United Arab Emirates to host the 2019 Asian Cup and the ban on women is expected to damage their chances of being awarded the tournament.

Blatter also criticized the continental confederations for failing to elect any women on to the Fifa’s executive committee. The committee includes three women, one with voting rights and two co-opted but they are elected directly by the Fifa Congress following a change to the statutes in 2011.

“This was hard work because the members of Fifa’s executive committee are elected by the national associations in their [continental] Congresses and … there was never, never a proposal for a woman to be finally in Fifa,” Blatter told an event at Fifa headquarters in Zurich. “We had to take the decision, and I did it in 2011 at the end of the Congress, I said we must have at least one woman on the executive committee,” he said.

“In all the confederations, there is no woman … this macho sport, and that’s a pity, we should change in the future.”
