Team Melli draws with Russia 1-1

Kazan.

Team Melli drew with the World Cup hosts Russia 1-1 in the friendly international match held on Tuesday at Kazan Arena in the capital of Tataristan Republic.

The match was the second game that was arranged by the football federation as part of a long program for next years world cup. Team Melli prolific scorer open the scoring in the 57th minute for Iran when he slotted an easy ball from a diagonal pass by Mehdi Taremi after some fine work and strong show by the Persepolis forward.

However, Taremi was the culprit in Russia’s equalizer as his poor covering on the right flank allowed the Russian winger Alexandr Samadov to cross the ball  unchallenged , leaving Dimitry Poloz the finish the move into Biranvand’s net.

Overall, it was a balanced match uneventful in the first half. The second half was more lively with Iran showing grit in defense and attack. Both Taremi and Sardar missed easy chances to put Iran two goals ahead.

The game saw the return of Jalal Hosseini in central defense after a long absence.

Iran U-17 Stuns Germany 4-0

Iran stunned Germany 4-0 in the biggest upset of the tournament so far to qualify for the knock-out round of the FIFA U-17 World Cup on Tuesday.

Iran, who controlled the proceedings throughout the Group C match, scored through Younes Delfi (6th and 42th), Allahyar Sayyad (49th) and Vahid Namdari (75th) at the Nehru Stadium in Margao.

Nothing went right for the Germans who were disorganised in the midfield and they could not trouble the rival defence. Their defence also kept a lot of space which the Iranians exploited with repeated forays.

Iran, who beat Guinea in their opening match, now sit on top of the group with six points and thus qualified for the round of 16.

Germany, who beat Costa Rica 2-1 in their opening match, now need to win against Guinea in their final group match in order to qualify for the knock-out round. Guinea and Costa who played out a 2-2 draw today have one point each.

Iran play their last match in Margao against Costa Rica on 13 October while Germany travel to Kochi to play against Guinea.

Iran, who adopted a defensive approach in their last match, today preferred to play an attacking game and the move paid off as they took the lead in the sixth minute when Younes Delfi took a shot which deflected from rival defender Jan Boller’s leg and found the net.

The early goal put the Germans in complete shambles. The Iranians attacked the German citadel regularly and could have increased the lead but keeper Luca twice denied Mohammed Ghobeishavi from scoring.

Luca Plogmann once again had to dive to bring a save from llahyar Sayyad in the 25th minute.

The pressure on the Germans was so much that they conceded another goal in the 42nd minute as Younes Delfi once again scored with a glancing header from a free kick taken by Mohammed Sharifi. The Iranians were 2-0 up at half time.

The Iranian defence gave a good account of themselves and did not allow the Germans any space to operate inside the danger zone.

The Germans had only one chance to score in the dying minutes of the first half when John Yeboah’s try went over the bar from close.

After the change of ends, Younes Delfi could have scored a hat-trick but German keeper Luca once again came off to his side’s rescue and denied him in the 48th minute when he blocked his shot.

But a minute latter, Delfi made a good move on the right and send a cross into the box which Allahyar Sayyed headed the ball into the net to kill the contest in favour of Iran.

Substitute Saeid Karimi then played a one-to-one pass with Vahid Namdari who shot home from close to complete the rout.

Goa: Iran kicked off their campaign in the FIFA U-17 World Cup with a 3-1 drubbing of Guinea in a Group C encounter at the Nehru stadium.

Defensive in the first half, Iran latched on to the chances that came their way, and score through Allahyar Sayyad (59th minute), Mohammed Sharifi (70th) and substitute Karimi Saeid (90th) to gain full points from their opening game of the tournament.

Guinea got a consolation goal when Fandje Toure found the back of the net in the first minute of injury time. Playing with 10 men for more than 20 minutes in the second half, Guinea dominated proceedings for a major part of the game and have themselves to blame for the defeat. They failed to convert the opportunities that came their way into goals, with Fandje twice failing to score after coming close.

Both teams failed to entertain the crowd due during a lacklustre first half. Guinea had more possession but lacked firepower, and Iran’s defence was always up to the task.

They had the first chance to take the lead in the 15th minute when Ibrahima Soumah, from the right, sent a cross into the box for Fandje, whose header hit the right post.

Guinea’s captain Sekou Camara, who was a livewire in the middle, then fed Fandje inside the box but the striker’s shot was well saved by rival goalkeeper Gholam Zadeh Ali in the 30th minute.

Iran, who were mostly defending, came up with occasional forays, and often played long balls. Things remained same in the second half with the African outfit enjoying possession but unable to break the deadlock.

Iran finally scored when Allahyar Sayyad unleased a right-footer that found the roof of the net in the 59th minute. The goal happened after Ghaderi Mohammed sent in a cross into the box, which was deflected by a rival defender. Mohammed Sharifi made it 2-0 for Iran when he converted a penalty the 70th minute. The spot kick was awarded after Guinea defender Cherif Camara fouled Ghaderi Mohammed inside the box and was red carded by referee Argote Jose.

Reduced to 10 men, Guinea had no option but to go all out in search of goals, but Iran defence stood their ground well. Substitute Karim rounded off the tally in the 90th minute to give Iran a comfortable win.

“Russia ready to face strong Iran” Stanislav Cherchesov

Cherchesov replaced Leonid Slutski after the Euros.

No. 64 Russia will host Team Melli (25th) in Kazan Arena in Kazan on October 10th. The Russian will face South Korea three days earlier in Moscow.

“I’ve previously talked about a friendly between Russia and Iran with Carlos Queiroz and now it’s going to happen,” Cherchesov said in an interview with IRNA.

“We’ve seen Iran’s match with South Korea and I have to say they take advantage of good players such as (Sardar) Azmoun, (Milad) Mohammadi and (Saeid) Ezatolahi. The friendly match will be an important warm-up match and I am sure my friend Queiroz thinks so. We are going to play a beautiful football with strong Iran and I am sure the fans will fill the seats,” he added.

“We have new players with new ideas in our football. Just 30 percent of the former players are in the new team. Russia football team are more interesting at the moment,” Cherchesov stated.

Russia played a friendly match against Iran in Abu Dhabi, the UAE in February 2011, losing the game 0-1. The team of the former Soviet Union played against Iran on three occasions winning all of them – in 1976 (Olympic Games 2-1), in 1978 (1-0) and in 1985 (2-0).

Queiroz on top

Team Melli shut down the Korean machine once again and prevented over 66,000 fans in the landmark World Cup stadium from leaving the stadium cheerfully. Iran drew away to South Korea, the only team in these FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifiers that have left the Korean soil with a point.

The two teams have been rivals in Asia for many decades but this particular match was significant for both each having its own reason.

It was the Korean coach Shin Tae-yong’s first official match in charge after his predecessor, the Germen Uli Stielike was sacked following a 3-2 defeat by lowly Qatar in the last match.

Victory in Shin Tae-yong’s first match in charge would have secured second place in Group A for Korea with Uzbekistan beaten 1-0 by China, but they could not find the breakthrough goal despite group winners Iran seeing Saeid Ezatolahi dismissed for kicking Kim Min-jae in the head after 52 minutes.

Frankly, South Korea despite its star studded team and a marquee player in Son Heung-min , the Tottenham midfielder, did not show much improvement against Iran under the new coach. Their offensive threat was no more than mild and only few balls eventually reached Biranvand in goal and none in anger.

Iran did not have to win, so Queiroz built his team on the basis of not losing. A solid defensive game plan where defending started deep in the middle of the field, was good enough to hold the Koreans at bay.

Queiroz was not going to allow the Koreans to get the better of him and he proved that he can pick his players to do exactly what he wants. The wide gap of experience between Shin Tae-yong & Carlos Queiroz showed in this match as the Korean coach failed to change the game plan, his offensive plans or change his offensive tactics to break the Iranians. Queiroz, on the other hand, easily adapted to losing a player and still keep the steadfast defense intact.

Saeid Ezatolahi seriously let Carlos Queiroz down. The Portuguese coach swears by the European based player for some very good reasons, discipline and professionalism being a couple of those attributes. However, The Rostov midfielder was a prime example of petulant and unprofessional act when he stepped on the Korean player’s head despite the Korean being guilty of rough play.

Such childish act was not in Queiroz’s script and he had to adapt and do some enforced changes. However, although the cunning Portuguese had very little problem in changing his line up to accommodate the loss of one midfielder, he has done that on the expense of falling short in the forward line allowing the Koreans to increase the pressure on his defenders.

One amazing performance in this match belonged to the Team Melli fans in the World Cup Stadium. The small groups of Iranian fans were vocal and supported Team melli with passion. Their chant of Iran was heard all over and clearly picked up by the TV microphones.

Team Melli players greeted those fans at the end of the match.

Syria is the last match and another meaningless encounter; however this proud record of clean sheet must be protected at all cost. It is now a mission.

Heartbreak for the massive Korean fans after Iran draw.

By Joo Kyung-don

SEOUL, Aug. 31 (Yonhap) — A red-colored football fever heated up the country’s largest football-only stadium Thursday as more than 60,000 South Korean fans decked out in red national team jerseys packed the venue to see their team’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Iran.

The Korea Football Association (KFA) said 63,124 fans were in attendance in South Korea’s showdown against Iran in the final Asian qualifying round for the 2018 FIFA World Cup that started at 9 p.m. at Seoul World Cup Stadium. This was the ninth largest crowd since the stadium opened in November 2001.

Prior to this match, Seoul World Cup Stadium had 20 occasions of 60,000 or more fans visiting the stadium for a football match. The largest attendance was in June 2002, when South Korea faced Germany in the FIFA World Cup semifinal.

The last time the stadium saw 60,000 spectators was in October 2013 when South Korea hosted Brazil for a friendly match.

The match against Iran was a crucial one for the Taeguk Warriors who are looking to advance to their nine consecutive World Cup. South Korea were heading into the match in second place in Group A with 13 points, just one point above third-place Uzbekistan. Iran, meanwhile, have already qualified for the World Cup in Russia by securing the top spot in the group.

In Asia, only the top two teams in each group are allowed to advance directly to the World Cup in Russia, while third-placed teams need to go through playoff rounds to win a spot.

For this important home match, the KFA previously said it wanted to draw more than 60,000 fans to the 66,704-seat Seoul World Cup Stadium so that the players can feed off the energy created by the home crowd. The KFA on Wednesday said more than 57,000 tickets were sold in advance, and with more tickets sold at the stadium, the attendance easily surpassed 60,000.

To achieve the targeted number, the KFA moved the kickoff time from 8:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. so that more people could come to the match after work.

At the stadium, officials also distributed red shirts for free so that the place can be covered in red, the team color for South Korea, while the Red Devils, a supporting group for the national football team, promised that more than 1,000 of its members will be in the stands to heat up the atmosphere.

By 8 p.m., most of the stadium was filled with people in red shirts, and the Red Devils started to chant their supporting songs while booing Iranian players when they entered the field for a warm-up. Team Melli’s supporters were in the upper stands at the stadium, but their sound was easily drowned out by the people with red shirts.

After the kickoff, the stadium shook with South Korean supporters’ cheering. They screamed when South Korea were attacking and booed Iran when they were creating their chances. When Iran’s Saeid Ezatolahi was ejected after stepping on Kim Min-jae’s head in the 52nd minute, South Koreans gave the Iranian midfielder mocking cheers for his violent foul.

South Koreans were as loud as they could be when Lee Dong-gook entered the pitch in the 89th for Hwang Hee-chan, hoping the veteran striker would score the winning goal.

But when the final whistle was blown to end the match, South Koreans lamented the goalless draw. South Korea would have clinched a spot if they beat Iran as Uzbekistan were pipped by China 1-0. Now, South Korea’s World Cup fate all comes down to their last qualifying match against Uzbekistan in Tashkent next Tuesday.

South Korean fans said they were here to see the national team beat Iran. Since 2011, South Korea have yet to collect a win against Iran, losing four straight games by the scores of 1-0.

“It’s sad that we couldn’t win,” said Lee Hyun-min, a South Korean fan at the stadium. “I enjoyed the match, but it would have been better if our national team collected a win.”

Iran Sets New Record in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

Iran’s national football team has set a new record in FIFA World Cup qualifier matches by playing 12 consecutive matches, 1108 minutes, without conceding a single goal.

Iran’s Thursday match with South Korea, which ended with a 0-0 draw, was the 12th match in a row that the Iranian cheetahs passed with a clean sheet.

The record was praised by the official Twitter account of FIFA World Cup.

Before playing against South Korea in Seoul, Iran had already qualified for 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia. However, the Iranian players sought to show their best and keep their clean sheet record in a match that was very crucial to Koreans.

Iran managed to hold South Korea even though its midfielder Saeid Ezzatollahi received a red card in the middle of the game.

Line up Korea Rep vs. Iran . Ehsan Hajsafy is starting, Azmoun on bench.

The line up for the match starting at 21:30 local time in World Cup Stadium , between Korea Rep and Iran has been announced.

The big news is that Ehsan Hajsafy is not only is in the squad , but also starting the match. On the other hand, there is no place fr the new boy Saman Ghoddos and the prolific striker Sardar Azmoun. Queiroz has decided to pick Reza Ghoochannejad over Azmoun as the Heerenveen striker has been doing quite well and enjoying a good form in the EREDIVISIE.
