Taremi’s wonder strike keeps Olympiacos hopes alive

Olympiacos secured an important victory against Bayer 04 Leverkusen with a 2–0 win at the Karaiskakis Stadium, keeping their qualification hopes alive for the next stage of Europe’s premier club competition.

The “Red-and-whites” started the match aggressively and, backed by their roaring fans, took the lead as early as the 2nd minute. Rodinei delivered a corner kick, and Costinha rose highest to head the ball into the net for the opening goal.

The final score was sealed in first-half stoppage time (45+1′). Olympiacos broke quickly down the right flank through Rodinei, who played a perfectly weighted through ball to Mehdi Taremi. The experienced striker calmly finished with a thunderous right shot, sending the ball into the net and making it 2–0.

Team Melli striker Mehdi Taremi has been in superb form this season. He has scored 8 goals in 11 matches in the Greek Super League and assisted with 2 goals. In the Champions League, he has already scored against Real Madrid in addition to Leverkusen .

In the last match, Olympiacos is away to Ajax Amsterdam. A win will assure the Greek champion’s qualification to the next round.

 •The Guardian

Mehdi Taremi did what he does best. On Saturday, the Iranian striker turned inside the area and scored for Olympiakos, a well-taken eighth goal of the season for the 33-year-old that clinched a 2-0 win at Atromitos and a place at the top of the Greek Super League. Usually, millions of people in Iran follow every step of Taremi’s European career, one that took off with Porto and has settled in Piraeus via Milan, but not this time.

The ruling regime in Tehran has cut the internet and all communications, which meant that residents of the football-loving nation also missed the non-celebration that followed. “It actually has to do with the conditions in my country,” Taremi said. “There are problems between the people and the government. The people are always with us, and that’s why we are with them. I couldn’t celebrate in solidarity with the Iranian people. I know that Olympiakos fans would like me to be happy, but I don’t celebrate the goals, in solidarity with what the Iranian people are going through.”

And what they are going through seems worse than at any time since the 1979 Islamic Revolution deposed the Shah and put Ayatollah Khomeini in power. Surging inflation and a collapsing currency have sparked major anti-government protests and unrest across Iran. The response has been brutal. The ruling regime is clinging on to power by dealing out death, more repression and an internet blackout that has lasted for days. WhatsApp messages remain with one tick, emails are undelivered and websites are unreachable. For the millions of people outside the country with loved ones inside, there is fear and worry.

Football has always occupied a central place in Iran, a country where the government, like many authoritarian regimes, is wary of the power of mass gatherings and their potential to turn political but is also ready to use success for its own ends. When Iran qualified for the 1998 World Cup, players were told to delay their return so celebrations could subside, and in a vital 2010 qualifier, several wore green armbands in support of the opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi during protests over a disputed election. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the declared winner, visibly tied himself to the team, visiting training sessions and lending his presidential plane for World Cup qualifiers, while at home most clubs remain closely linked, directly or indirectly, to the state.

Speaking out is not easy. Ali Daei, like Taremi a cultural icon, backed protests in 2022 and subsequently saw his family prevented from leaving the country. During the last World Cup, which coincided with nationwide protests following the death of Mahsa Amini – a 22-year-old woman arrested for allegedly wearing her hijab improperly – former national team defender Voria Ghafouri was detained for, according to the Fars News Agency, “spreading propaganda against Iran”.

Last week, Ghafouri, the former captain of 10-time champions Tehran Esteghlal, reportedly announced that he was closing his cafes in the capital in solidarity with the protesters. IranWire, a news outlet run by Iranian journalists in exile and citizen reporters inside the country, reported that Fars had warned of repercussions. “These unrests will soon come to an end, but the real test for officials of the football federation will begin afterwards, when they must show that calls for chaos will receive a firm response.”

Threats against Taremi may not work. Few Iranians are better known internationally. Despite once being seen as a supporter of the regime, it seems as though the player has evolved since making a name for himself at Tehran giants Persepolis. Taremi has criticised the state of facilities back home, including the capital’s iconic Azadi Stadium, and has asked why there is a reluctance to allow big crowds to gather. He was the leader of the team at the 2022 World Cup that did not sing the national anthem in the first game with England, an act repeated on 7 January in the Under-23 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia when the Iranian team kept quiet before their fixture against South Korea.

In Qatar three years ago, the players and head coach, Carlos Queiroz, grew frustrated at what they saw as constant questions from western media on the protests back home, rather than football issues, and demanded to know why counterparts went unquizzed. “Why don’t you ask the other coaches?” Queiroz said. “Why don’t you ask Southgate: ‘What do you think about England and the United States that left Afghanistan and all the women alone?’”

Now there is a desire for more questions and more information with Iran cut off from the world. At the weekend, Queiroz took to social media with a post that included a line attributed to the influential Tehran-born poet Ahmad Shamlou, born 100 years ago last month. “Freedom is breathing in an air where there is no lie.”

“To all Iranian people, My beloved Players, Staff and Friends,” Queiroz added, “I have spent many years among the Iranian people – players, staff, families, friends – and I know their dignity, warmth, and resilience. My heart and thoughts are with the people of Iran during these difficult but challenging days of hope. I am deeply concerned for their safety and well-being.”

Mehdi Taremi Completes Move to Olympiacos

ATHENS, Greece – In a significant move for both player and club, Iranian international striker Mehdi Taremi has officially joined Greek Super League champions Olympiacos on a multi-year contract. The transfer brings an end to months of speculation and marks a new chapter for the prolific forward.

The deal was finalized after Taremi, who was in camp with the Iranian national team for a CAFA Nations Cup 2025 tournament in Tajikistan, received special permission from his coach. He departed on a private jet to Athens, Greece, on Sunday, underwent and passed his medical examinations, and signed his contract before returning to rejoin his national team duties.

Transfer Details and Contract

According to widespread reports from major Greek media outlets and renowned international football journalists, including Fabrizio Romano, Olympiacos secured Taremi’s services for a modest transfer fee of approximately €2-2.5 million. This represents a significant coup for the Piraeus-based club, as the 31-year-old striker was available on a free transfer just last summer.

Taremi has signed a contract that will see him earn over €2 million per season. His arrival is a major statement of intent from Olympiacos as they prepare for a demanding campaign on both domestic and European fronts.

A New Challenge for Taremi

Upon his arrival in Athens, Taremi expressed his excitement about the new challenge. “I am very happy to join Olympiacos. Everyone knows how big and popular this club is, and I hope I can help the team,” he stated.

He also addressed the prospect of competing for a starting role with the club’s other attackers, including AFCON hero Ayoub El Kaabi and Ukrainian forward Roman Yaremchuk. “We are all here to help the team succeed, and the main goal is the success of the club. I am ready to compete and contribute in any way I can.”

From Milan to Piraeus

Taremi joins Olympiacos after a single season with Italian giants Inter Milan, where he arrived as a free agent following a highly successful stint with FC Porto. While often used in a rotational role at Inter, the Iranian made 43 appearances across Serie A and European competitions, scoring three goals and providing nine assists, playing a part in the Nerazzurri’s Scudetto-winning campaign.

Before choosing Olympiacos, Taremi was a sought-after commodity, attracting serious interest from several European clubs and notably turning down lucrative offers from Brazilian powerhouses Flamengo and Botafogo.

What This Move Means

For Olympiacos, this is a marquee signing. Taremi brings a wealth of experience from top European leagues and the UEFA Champions League, along with a proven track record of goalscoring and playmaking. His presence immediately bolsters their attack as they seek to dominate the Greek Super League once more.

For Taremi, the move offers a central role in an ambitious project and the guaranteed opportunity to feature in the UEFA Champions League. Olympiacos will face a “group of death” featuring European heavyweights Real Madrid, AC Milan, and Borussia Dortmund, providing Taremi with a perfect stage to showcase his talents.

Olympiacos currently sits atop the Greek Super League table with a perfect six points from their opening two matches. The addition of a player of Taremi’s caliber makes them a formidable force as they look to achieve success both at home and on the continent’s biggest stage.

With deadline day looming, Inter have still not managed to find a new club for striker Mehdi Taremi.

The Iranian has looked set to leave Inter for much of the summer transfer window.

And multiple potential destinations have emerged.

Reportedly, Leeds United and Fulham have shown an interest in bringing Taremi to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Ligue 1 side Lille have also come forward. As have Serie A new boys Sassuolo.

Botafogo and Flamengo had already tried to bring Taremi to Brazil. However, the 33-year-old has made clear that he prefers to stay in Europe.

Despite all these clubs showing an interest, though, Taremi has so far remained an Inter player all summer long.

This has led to several clubs coming forward in the final days of the transfer window to try their luck.

Among these have been PSV and Panathanaikos. Furthermore, Lyon have also come forward.

But it is Olympiacos who have managed to reach an agreement with both Inter and Olympiacos, reports Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Sky transfer expert reports that the 33-year-old striker is one step away from the move to Athens.

The deal will be worth around €10 million to Inter in terms of the wages they save on as well as a fee, Di Marzio reports.

Official: Ehsan Hajsafi signs with AEK Athens.

Team Melli Captain Ehsan Hajsafy joined the Greek club AEK Athens. HajSafi who traveled to Athens after finishing his season with Sepahan in the 20th edition of the Persian Gulf League, officially signed a contract with the Greek side this evening. The contract of the captain of the Iranian national team with this club is until the end of the summer of 2023.

Hajsafi will be joining Karim Ansarifard in AEK Athens.

Hajsafi (31 years) previously played for Panionios in the 2017–2018 season and played 14 matches scoring 1 goal before moving briefly to 2018 Olympiacos where he played 6 times and scored 1 goal. AEK is one of the three most successful teams in Greek football (including Olympiacos and Panathinaikos), winning 30 national titles. The team is coached by the Serbian Vladan Milojević.

Hajsafi has played 113 games for Team Melli since his debut against Zambia in a friendly in May 2008. He scored 6 goals for Team Melli.

Forest Boss is all praise for Karim Ansarifard

While Nottingham Forest forward Lewis Grabban snaffled up his tenth goal of the season as well as three points for the Reds, as they beat previously table-topping Sheffield United 1-0 at the City Ground and the £6m striker grabbed the spotlight again, Forest boss Aitor Karanka is delighted to have further strengthened his attacking arsenal with the capture of the Team Melli Striker, Karim Ansarifard.

Forest had to be patient while working through significant red tape to complete the signing of the 28-year-old, who had his contract with Olympiacos terminated in August, in order to facilitate his move to the Championship.

“I am really pleased to have signed him. I knew that the day would arrive,” said Karanka, who gave the player his debut as a substitute, deep into injury time. “The day has arrived yesterday, which was really good, given that we need him.

“The delay was to do with the work permit. I don’t know the exact details, but it was only ever a question of getting the right paperwork.”
I am just pleased to have him because, even in the two minutes he had on the pitch, he showed that he is crazy to play for this team.”

Karanka says Ansarifard is fit and ready to go – but says he will need some time to adapt to the Championship.

“He is fully fit and ready to go, but he will need time to settle in, having arrived in this league from another country,” said Karanka. “But he is a professional and he is a winner. I am positive.”
“He scored 17 goals for Olympiacos and he has quality. He is a good finisher.

“To score goals we need to get the ball into the box and you need players to be arriving into the box at the right time.

“We have good players and we are arriving at the right time. We have very good strikers. We have Lewis, we have Daryl (Murphy) and now we have Karim as well.

“Now we have another alternative. He is a good player and another player who is a very good person and a good teammate for the changing room.

“He only played one or two minutes, but the run he made in the last seconds can show you how hungry he is; how much he wants to help the team. “He is a good man and a good player, so I am really pleased with him.”

Karim made the cameo appearance with the minimal of preparation in the 90th minute of the game.

Three team Melli players play in the English leagues. Apart from Karim, Alireza Jahanbakhsh plays for Brighton and Saeid Ezatolahi plays for Reading in the Championship.

Finally…Nottingham Forest signs Ansarifard

Nottingham Forest have signed Iran striker Karim Ansarifard after delays obtaining a work permit.
The 28-year-old Team Melli center forward has signed a one-and-a-half year contract, after finally being granted a work permit to enable him to join the Championship club.

Ansarifard joins as a free agent on a deal until the summer of 2020.

He has been without a club since being released by Olympiacos – the Greek club owned by Forest majority shareholder Evangelos Marinakis – in August.

Ansarifard scored 17 goals in 26 league appearances for Olympiacos last season and featured against Burnley in the Europa League earlier this term.

He has scored 18 goals in 68 international appearances for Iran, including the equaliser against European champions Portugal at the 2018 World Cup.

Nottingham Forest fans have been reacting to the much anticipated signing of Karim Ansarifard.

The former Olympiacos forward arrives at the City Ground on a free transfer following the termination of his contract with the Greek club in August.

He signed terms on a one-and-a-half year contract in Nottingham and will add competition to the current forward line of Nottingham forest in-form Lewis Grabban, Daryl Murphy and Hillal Soudani.

Despite the move only being announced on the day of today’s visit of table-topping Sheffield United the forward is eligible to be included in Aitor Karanka’s squad.
This however will not be his first time taking on English opposition this season as he featured for his former side Olympiacos as they eliminated Burnley in the Europa League.

Ghleechkhani’s Unreachable , Unassailable record.

Iran has a legend in Ali Daei whose 109 goals in international games is a record that seems to be incredibly difficult to beat in the near future.

The Shariyar has the World All-time Top scorer record registered under his name; no one is even close to this 109 goals unless you consider the 85 that Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal has scored to be quite near!

Despite of that, Daei is not the first hero of Iran’s illustrious football history. That accolade goes to the great Parviz Ghleechkhani who preceded him in an implausible record that is simply next to impossible to beat in modern day football.

Ghleechkhani has played in 3 AFC Asian Cup tournaments. He won 3 titles in 1968, 1972 and 1976. The utility player who has excelled in every post he played, bar in the goal, has played 12 matches in the three editions of what was called Asian Nations Cup and won them all. No draws, no defeats and absolute 100% record. As such, Ghleechkhani holds 2 Asian records with that feat. 3 consecutive championships title and the 100% undefeated record. No Asian player is close to those records.

Ghleechkhani. who was the Captain of Team Melli ,  added the Asian Games Tehran 1974 Gold Medal to his cabinet too.

Considered by many as Iran’s best ever player, Parviz Ghleechkhani was deprived from the World Cup when Iran first qualified in 1978. His absence was nothing to do with football but much about politics and his expression of leftist leaning views in the era of the Pahlavi dictatorship. Ghleechkhani was arrested by SAVAK in February 1972 for anti-regime activities and viewing or spreading of Marxists literature which was a taboo in Iran. Some months later, Ghleechkhani appeared live on national TV in an orchestrated interview where he expressed his regrets and declared repentance; as a result, he was released from prison a few days later.

Ghleechkhani continued playing football with unrelenting success on the field. He was offered professional contracts by a number of European clubs including Galatasaray S.K, Bayern Munich, Olympiacos. Despite being released, Ghleechlkhani was constantly monitored and kept under surveillance by the regime security apparatus. He was not allowed to leave Iran to play for any of the clubs that offered him contracts. While still at his peak and playing quite well in the North American Soccer League (NASL) with SD Earthquakes, he was ignored in the selection for the squad of Team Melli to Argentine for the first ever appearance in the FIFA World Cup in 1978.

The legendary midfielder played for several clubs starting from Kayan, Taj, Pas , Oghab , Daraei, and Persepolis. In 1977 he moved to the United States where he signed for the San Jose Earthquake.

The success of the Iranian Revolution in 1979 lead by Ayattollah Khomeini was another serious setback for the activist Ghleechkhani. In April 1979 Iran was declared an Islamic republic, while elements within the clergy promptly moved to exclude their former left-wing, nationalist, and intellectual allies from any positions of power in the new regime, and a return to conservative social values was enforced.  Ghleechkhani and his comrades were out of luck.

Ghleechkhani’s success was hindered by his political beliefs and the struggles against the regimes of both The Shah and Ayatollah Khomeini. Ghleechkhani was a great player in all meaning of the word. He never managed to reach his potential despite his skills and abilities, instead he made millions of Iranians fans celebrate the success of Team Melli through his great performances. One of the most memorable of which , was against Australia in the FIFA Qualifiers in 1973 in Tehran Arayamehr Stadium (Azadi) where he scored two goals in less than 30 minutes. His first was a thunderous shoot and the second a penalty.

An exile in Paris now, Ghleechkhani record of 3 consecutive Asian Cup titles and 100% record, seems like being immortal.

Late strike by Ansarifard gives Iran a narrow win against Lithuania

Karim Ansarifard scored a late winner to give Iran a 1-0 victory over Lithuania in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Friday.

Carlos Queiroz’s side, who will face Morocco, Spain and Portugal in Group B at the World Cup, went into the game on the back of a 2-1 friendly defeat against Turkey in Istanbul and struggled to create chances against Edgaras Jankauskas’ lively Lithuania side.

After going in goalless at half-time, Iran spent much of the second half pinned back by waves of Lithuanian attacks, with Justas Lasickas firing over the crossbar before substitute Povilas Leimonas failed to hit the target after a neat passing move culminated in a chance on the hour mark.

Iran came to life in the last 10 minutes of the game, piling forwards and creating a number of chances before Olympiacos striker Ansarifard tried his luck from the edge of the penalty area and found the net in the 88th minute.

While the result – Iran’s fourth victory in their last six international friendlies – will have pleased Queiroz, the manner of his side’s performance will have given him food for thought ahead of their group opener against Morocco on June 15.

This was the last friendly of Team Melli. Due to a mixture of issues, games against Greece and Kosovo were cancelled. At the last minute it was been able to arrange this game against Lithuania. The Iran was the first team to arrive in Russia and has been in Moscow for 3 days, where it will play. its fifth participation in the World Cup.

Lithuania is a fourth tier team of Europe, which has not played in any World Cup, nor is it expected to do so in the short and medium term. The team consists of local players who play in their country’s, infima league, where their first division players, would have problems playing in the third division of Spain, for example.

Ansarifard Joins Olympiacos

Team Melli striker Karim Ansarifard has joined the Greek giants Olympiacos from Panionios on a three-and-a-half year contract and a reported fee of €400,000 on Friday.

The 26-year-old who made a name for himself in Greek Super league with Panionios after scoring 11 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions last season, had offers from AEK, PAOK FC, Feyenoord and Olympique de Marseille. This current season, Karim has scored 5 goals and provided 3 assists in 14 matches.

Olympiacos is currently leading the table in the Greek Super League with 37 points from 14 games under tutelage of Portuguese coach Paolo Bento who was appointed in August 2016.

Olympiacos has qualified for the round of 32 in UEFA Europa League and they will take Turkish side Osmanlispor in a two-leg clash.
Although it was initially reported that Ansarifard would remain at Panionios until the end of the 2016-17 season, the contract he eventually signed is effective from the January 2017 transfer window.

Karim started his professional career in 2007 with Saipa before moving to Iranian league giant Persepolis in 2012. After 2014 World Cup Ansarifard moved to Spanish Segunda division Osasuna where he was mostly used as a bench-warmer.
A move to Panionios in the summer of 2015 saved his career as his good performance caught the eye of big teams and finally Olympiacos signed him.
