Group ‘F’ analysis by FIFA

fifa.com

Group F will feature one match that has become something of a classic fixture of and five that have never been played on the big stage before, part of the reason for which is because Bosnia-Herzegovina are making their first appearance at the FIFA World Cup™, while Iran have only ever faced their group rivals in friendlies.

As for Argentina and Nigeria, the other two combatants in the group, there is not much they do not know about each other. Their meeting next June will be the latest instalment in an exciting rivalry between the two sides, led by Lionel Messi and John Obi Mikel, who have faced off three times in major competitions at different age levels: the final of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Netherlands 2005, the gold medal match at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament Beijing 2008 and in the group phase at South Africa 2010. On all three occasions Argentina won.

The teams
There is not much that has not already been said about two-time world champions Argentina or for that matter about Messi, who will renew his bid to lift the FIFA World Cup™ Trophy. Alejandro Sabella’s men are the favourites to top a group in which reigning African champions Nigeria will be aiming to make the experience they have acquired on their four previous appearances count. Meanwhile, Bosnia will be out to replicate the entertaining brand of football that made them the fourth-highest scorers in the European qualifiers, and Iran, coached by Portugal’s Carlos Queiroz will hope to combine solid organisation with the technical attributes they have long been known for.

Players to watch
Lionel Messi, (ARG), Sergio Aguero (ARG), Gonzalo Higuain (ARG), John Obi Mikel (NGA), Victor Moses (NGA), Victor Obinna (NGA), Edin Dzeko (BIH), Vedad Ibisevic (BIH), Miralem Pjanic (BIH), Reza Ghoochannejhad (IRN), Javad Nekounam (IRN), Karim Ansari (IRN).

The crunch match
Bosnia-Nigeria: in a section that most people will expect Argentina to win, games such as this one will be crucial in deciding who goes through to the last 16. The European side will have the challenge of performing in circumstances that will be entirely new to them, while the Nigerians will be eyeing the chance to reach the knockout phase for the first time since France 1998.

A look back
Argentina 2-1 Nigeria, 25 June 1994, Boston
This game, which will forever be remembered as Diego Armando Maradona’s last match for his country, pitted an Argentina side packed with stars such as El Diez, Claudio Caniggia, Fernando Redondo and Gabriel Batistuta against a Nigeria team very much on the up and up and featuring the likes of Rashidi Yekini, Finidi George and Emmanuel Amunike. The Africans took a surprise early lead through Samson Siasia, only for the wily Caniggia to turn the game around with a typically predatory double. The blond-haired striker’s cry of “Diego, Diego”, imploring Maradona to play the pass that would lead to his second goal, is an iconic moment for Argentina fans.

Did you know?
Bosnia-Herzegovina, who played their first official match as an independent national team in November 1995, came close to making their World Cup debut at South Africa 2010 but lost out in the play-offs to Portugal. Twenty-four of their 26 most regularly selected players ply their trade outside the country.

The stat
36 – The number of years since Argentina and Iran met for the first and only time to date. That match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, took place in Madrid on 22 March 1977 and formed part of Real Madrid’s 75th anniversary celebrations. One year later La Albiceleste won their maiden World Cup title on home soil in a competition that marked the Asian side’s world finals debut.

Belo Horizonte avoids World Cup delays.

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil (AP) — Belo Horizonte was one of the first Brazilian cities to be ready for the World Cup, avoiding the delays that marked the preparations of nearly all other host cities.

Matches will be played at the renovated Mineirao Stadium, one of Brazil’s most revered football venues. It was inaugurated in December 2012, and was one of the two (along with Fortaleza’s Castelao Stadium) not to miss FIFA’s deadline for the Confederations Cup.

The venue was used in the semifinals of the World Cup warm-up tournament, when Brazil beat Uruguay to stay on track to eventually win the title.

The Mineirao will seat more than 62,000 fans and will host four group matches: Colombia vs. Greece on June 14; Belgium vs. Algeria on June 17; Argentina vs. Iran on June 21; and Costa Rica vs. England on June 24. It will also host a match in the round of 16 on June 28, possibly with Brazil playing, and a semifinal match on July 8.

The southeastern city, which is also home to the training camps of Argentina and Chile, is filled with football tradition, fueled by the rivalry between Cruzeiro and Atletico Mineiro, two of the country’s most successful clubs.

Queiroz wants Iran “Amateurs” in the final round of the World Cup!

From: http://www.maisfutebol.iol.pt/

While considering it an elusive goal in a group that has Argentina, Bosnia and Nigeria, Queiroz is thinking beyond the group stages of the World Cup 2014.

Carlos Queiroz admits he will have difficulty in forming a group of 23 competent players for the World Cup. The coach of Iran is faced with a lack of high quality raw material, but does not give up plotting ambitious goals, so the goal is to go beyond the first round of the championship. Placed in Group F, Iran will face Argentina , Nigeria and Bosnia Herzegovina.

“The ambition is to qualify for the second round. I know it’s an elusive goal too, I know it’s a fantasy, but I do not believe  in the theory that we are going to the World Cup just to learn. To raise the level of commitment,  people only understand this, I do not care to create this fantasy, because it is the best way to raise the commitment “, The Portuguese explained during the Conference ‘Speak  Football ‘, which was held in Lisbon recently.

The Portuguese knows the difficulties Iran will encounter. “The team is structurally amateur and will face opponents with players who have much experience in international competitions, but we have crossed hell, that was the qualification rounds , now the World Cup is to cross the sky ‘, Queiroz  admitted that when it comes to counting, Iran had only one player in the national team who worked abroad and now has half the team out, because he was looking for players of Iranian descent who had never represented the country (…).
”Still, the group for the World will not have any player with experience of Champions League.”
“In this sense, the strategy will be based on an intense observation of opponents shortfalls, known weak points and seizing the right moment to make a difference.”  concluded Queiroz as his strategy to play against the World Cup opponents.

Editorial comment

Queiroz disturbing and unabated downgrading of Iranian football and players seems to continue unabated.  During a football related conference in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, Queiroz once again referred to the Iranian players as amateurs, thereby hitting two birds with one stone. The fact is very clear. None of over 30 players that Queiroz has selected in Team Melli in the last 18 months is an amateur. They are all professionals with the only mean of income , being football. But Queiroz still insist on referring to them as amateurs, as a mean of downgrading their ability as players rather than the true meaning of the word and their job status.

Of course, Queiroz talk could very well be tactical ploy as he is lowering the expectation of the rest of the world from his team and warning the Iranians not to expect much from a bunch of “Amateurs” thereby absolving himself of serious accountability when Iran comes empty handed from the World Cup.  However, his degrading remarks about Iranian football are seriously bordering a insults.

A famous Iranian football personality, who was quizzed about how tolerant the media are against all the humiliating remarks of Queiroz, while the same Iranian media are usually hyper critical and ruthless against their own national coaches of Team Melli, justified this change of attitude as the media’s desire to calm the situation and not create controversy harming Team Melli spirit , while approaching the World Cup! The same person who did not wished to be named, also remarked that many of the football analyst  talk about Queiroz as a necessity in developing Iran’s football and essential ingredient of Iran winning the AFC Asian Cup 2015.

Iran, after another football miracle.

Sayed Jalal Talebi, the coach of Iran explained it clearly in the days before. “in the locker room, those ninety minutes would last forever. Defeat could have the character of a life sentence. But a victory would transform them into celebrities territory in which football is also a space for expression.” Talebi , the coach of Iran football , talking about his players who played in that famous June 21, 1998 match, at the Gerland Stadium, under the sky of Lyon, France in World Cup. Opposite U.S.A rival in the field of international politics since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. That match raised much interest in every aspect but less in footballing terms as an event which was mentioned in every corner of the planet. The British magazine FourFourTwo called it the most politically charged match in history . But for the world and the millions of people watching , around the globe, the television showed mutual regards, respect and even flowers exchanged between the two rivals as a treat. The players of both teams posed together for photos and mingled. Even in the stands, both groups of supporters shared the traditional wave that had become popular from Mexico 1986.

That day, Iran felt like an instant world champion. Beyond the suspense that was forced by the rebound of by Brian McBride with only three minutes of the game left, it was a party that moved from the heart of Western Europe to the streets of Tehran, Mashhad, Isfahan and Karaj. 2-1 victory created its own heroes: Hamid Estili got a header, flicking the ball over the goalkeeper Kasey Keller and celebrated as if he wanted to embrace the whole country. Since then became an emblem also outside the field: Sayyed Ali Khamenei Supreme Leader of Iran expressed his appreciation to him in public; and the man wearing the number nine bluntly expressed himself as a follower and admirer of former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The second goal was scored by one of the most prominent Iranian soccer players of all time: Mehdi Mahdavikia. with a burst of speed in a supersonic counter, ran leaving his chaser for dead , beat them all with sheer speed from the left, before the advancing goalkeeper came rushing , but Mahdavikia beat him as well with the tip of his right loot. That match and his performance in the World Cup helped him to be transferred to Germany: from then until 2010 he played in the Bundesliga for Hamburg, Bochum and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Football in the country was traversed by conflicts , as was the life of normal Iranians. After the Revolution of 79, between 1980 and 1988 the war with Iraq was followed. The consequences were estimated at a million dead, more than two million injuries and four million displaced by the horror. Football took a back stage. Until those painful days , the national team , Team Melli , was a machine to beat:
consecutively winning three Asian Cups played between 1968 and 1976 with a perfect record. Two years after this excellent series in Argentina, Iran debuted in the World Cup. Team Melli debut was a 0-3 loss against Holland in Mendoza. Four days later, a milestone happened: Cordoba, Iran scored its first goal (by Iraj Danaeifar) and scored its first point with 1-1 draw against Scotland.

Then out into the world, the most popular sport also became a prisoner of war. Federation decided to withdraw from the FIFA 82 Spain and refused to participate in 86 of Mexico’s inability to play in their own territory. For security issues, FIFA claimed that their matches should be played in neutral cities. Local competition was also affected. Only in the nineties , after the war ended , the restructuring of the league and football started to take shape. Until it became ripe with the generation of 98-led by Ali Daei, the player with more goals and more games in the history of Team Melli. This generation was to bring Iran back to the world stage.

Apart from conflicts, football is a tradition. The film “Offside” by the famous Iranian director , Jafar Panahi , is a testament. The subject of the film was attempt to watch a World Cup 2006 qualifying match against Bahrain in the stadium. Iranians have a passionate and unanimous support for the teams that represents them. But with certain restrictions. Two young women wanted to go inside the stadium where they were not allowed to. They disguise themselves as males. On the way, the two girls have the backing of several fans who seem less interested in respecting the boundaries imposed by gender and religious sermons. The film, which won the Golden Bear in Berlin in 2006, was inspired by a true story: the daughter of the director himself.

Iran has a long history of football. The Federation was founded in 1920, but joined FIFA 25 years later. However, already in 1941 a team that played (and scoreless draw) with Afghanistan in the first meeting on record was formed. Anyway, the first match in an official capacity, was played in 1950, against Turkey in Istanbul. It was a time of learning: on that occasion, the team lost 6-1. Two decades later, with other faces but the same enthusiasm, the Iranians would become the best in the continent.

After many ups and downs, now Iran will play their fourth World Cup . In its previous three appearances , Iran played nine games and just won that memorable game against the United States, drawn two and lost six. Iran last performance in Germany 2006 was a tie farewell: 1-1 agsint Angola in Leipzig, with a goal from defender Sohrab Bakhtiarizadeh. This time Iran is full of expectation to overcome the hurdles and qualify from the group stages for the first time. The path of the Qualifying matches in Asian zone portrays that expectation and it is a latent possibility: the team finished first in one of the final two groups of the continent and only Japan had more points in that instance. The overall numbers speak for themselves: ten victories, four draws and two defeats.

Hiring Carlos Queiroz is another indication in respect of that ambition to take the plunge. hierarchy and expertise was sought. The Portuguese coach, who led Real Madrid in the 03/04 season and was assistant to Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, has an extensive road coaching selections: he led the United Arab Emirates, South Africa and headed to Portugal in the last World Cup. Now, with a fresh and young team (only two players over 30 years), will try to become the revelation of Group F, which will face Argentina of Messi, June 21, in Belo Horizonte.

the Iranian football is now living in a different era. As the stadium seems to tell the story: “Azadi”, opened in 1971, located in the heart of the sports complex that bears the same name, in Tehran looks like a monument of wonder. According to a British website What Culture, published last year, the stadium is among the ten best in the world, up to Old Trafford, Camp Nou and Soccer City, venue for the last final in South Africa 2010. From the heart of Azadi in the Iranian capital, the strong national team is determined to show its worth in Brazil and its rightful place in world football.

There where Iran will attempt to build another football miracle.

Carlos Queiroz cool on World Cup but optimistic about Asian Cup.

March 27, 2014 Updated: March 27, 2014 14:24:00

Globetrotting coach Carlos Queiroz says Asia’s No 1, Iran, have the passion and quality to win the Asian Cup in Australia next year.

The three-time continental winners were Wednesday drawn in Group C, the ‘Group of Gulf’, with all-Arab opposition from across the Gulf in United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain, but Queiroz believes they can go all the way.

Queiroz, the former assistant to Alex Ferguson at Manchester United who went on to manage Real Madrid and the Portuguese national team, is preparing Iran for their fourth World Cup finals appearance in Brazil where they are grouped with Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Nigeria.

He believes they will be better equipped to challenge for January’s Asian Cup after the experience of playing at the World Cup which begins in June.

“We try our best in Brazil. We have limited resources, we have some issues in our preparation but the federation is making a lot of effort to give the best to the players and the team,” Queiroz, from Portugal, said after Wednesday’s draw in Sydney.

“In the last three years despite all the difficulties Iran showed that the important thing in football is passion and if you have passion for the game that is always a good starting point.

“With the passion of the players and the fans we were able to qualify the team for the World Cup and I think using that extraordinary feeling of Iran they have a good chance to come to Australia and go back home with a medal . And who knows even the first position, I think it is possible.”

The 61-year-old, who will finish his two-and-a-half year contract as coach after the World Cup, believes Iran have improved during his time in charge.

“The team is playing much better football, more competitive and with the results. No doubt since I arrived there has been great progress in the team and the players,” he said.

“When I first arrived I remember if you were not able to put player A or B or C the entire nation was crying because it was all about a couple of names.

“After three years we play Kuwait with a second team and we can beat them.  So that means there is a great and fantastic potential in Iran, just a matter of putting things in the right place and the right programmes.”

While his eyes are on his main task at the World Cup, he is confident Iran can topple Asian powerhouses Japan and South Korea at the Asian Cup.  “Three years ago Iran was fourth or fifth in Asia and today is the number one country,” he said. “I don’t think it is a realistic position because Japan and South Korea are still in front of all the other countries in Asia in my opinion, but results are results.

“The number one Asian ranking should be used to raise the self-esteem of the players in order to create a better motivation to win the Asian competition. Japan and South Korea are very strong but with special work and not copying European or South American systems the Asian teams can close the gap (on the major nations).”

Nigerian Onazi: Eagles Can Go All The Way In Brazil

SS Lazio of Italy midfielder Ogenyi Onazi is confident the Super Eagles can go all the way in Brazil at the FIFA World Cup if the players have self belief.Onazi says the Super Eagles must also be totally focussed on the job at hand instead of concentrating on particular teams, warning that all the qualified teams have the chance to win the trophy.

”No matter how small, we have to accept the fact that all the countries who have qualified to play at the World Cup do have some a chance. Football is an interesting and dicey game. We have to go out with the belief that we can do it,” Onazi said in an interview with mtnfootball.

Onazi is however not worried about playing Argentina who have beaten the Super Eagles three times in three clashes and prefers not to think about how the team prepares for the tournament instead of the competition proper.

”We are going to take it one game at a time. For now, we have some preparatory matches to look forward to before the World Cup. When we get to Brazil, we will worry about Iran, Bosnia and Argentina in that order.”

On if he sees the Super Eagles ending their winless streak against Argentina,Onazi says Eagles must not pay too much attention to the game.

”Like I said, we won’t play Argentina until we are done with both Iran and Bosnia. We have to avoid concentrating on one team alone and forget others that we will even face before Argentina. No doubt, Argentina are a big team and they are favourites, but that’s where it ends.”

Super Eagles goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama believes that their first two games against Iran and Bosnia-Herzegovina at the 2014 FIFA World Cup would determine how far they would go.

Enyeama who will be making his third appearance at the FIFA World Cup for Nigeria, said that they will not underrate the two teams at the tournament.

Nigeria is in group F and would play their first game against Iran in Curitiba, before subsequent games against Bosnia-Herzegovina,then Argentina.

“Whether Iran, Bosnia and Argentina these are no easy games. All these nations we are facing, are also serious about getting results. But we will see how it goes with the Super Eagles, we will do all our best to progress from the group,” said Enyeama who has this season been the undisputed number one keeper for his clubside,Lille FC.

Enyeama equally noted that he would even want to play against France in the second round of the World Cup.

“I hope of course that we can pass the group stage. And who knows, meet France in the second round,” said Enyeama who was speaking before his side’s trip to AS Monaco

Tevez has no World Cup hopes.

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Carlos Tevez holds out no hope of being part of Argentina’s World Cup squad and prefers not to watch their matches on television, the Juventus striker said on Friday.

The 29-year-old, who has been in fine scoring form with 10 Serie A goals for juve so far this season, has been overlooked since Alejandro Sabella became Argentina coach in August 2011.

“If Sabella hasn’t called me up, I’m not going to phone him to find out why he doesn’t pick me,” Tevez told Argentina’s La Red radio station.

“Sabella must not be asked to call me up… Let him work in peace because it’s not easy for Sabella not to call me. I know there’s a lot of pressure especially from fans.”

The former Manchester City, Manchester United and West Ham United striker said he had a good relationship with the Argentina players and national team captain Lionel Messi.

“I have no problems with the group and I get on great with Messi. I don’t lose sleep over the World Cup. I don’t think I will watch it because it hurts me to see the national team, it’s bad for me,” he said.

Some media pundits say Tevez, who last played for Argentina in the 2011 Copa America quarter-final defeat by Uruguay, may not fit into Sabella’s tactical plans while others argue that he might disrupt the squad’s harmony.

Tevez was part of the Argentina teams that reached the quarter-finals of the last two World Cups in Germany in 2006 and South Africa in 2010.

Argentina, winners in 1978 and 1986, are in Group F with Bosnia, Iran and Nigeria at next year’s finals in Brazil which kick off on June 12.

Doustimeher urging for Fans support.

Ali Doustimehr declared said “it’s our fault, because the U-17 team should have at least grabbed 4 points from the two games played against Argentina and Canada. We could have wrapped it up and done the job there and then, instead we have put ourselves in this situation were qualification to the next round is a bit more difficult”.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference in Al Ain , UAE where Iran`s U-17 team is scheduled to meet Austria in the final game of Group Ali Doustimeher added “we have a tough task against Austria, “

“We lost great scoring opportunities against the Canadian, The players and the fans are still lamenting those wasted chances. Some players are still affected by that and still quite upset as we speak. It is not much use talking about it. Now our goal is to qualify and to do that we need to win rather than hope to qualify based on the best second teams results.

About the preparations and plans for the Friday game against the Austrians,  the U-17 coach said “Much of our preparation was in form of recovery and reducing the tension that was felt after the last game.  We had a good couple of days in the recovery phase.  We analyzed Austria based on the games they played and the European style they deploy and hence the training was adjusted as such to ensure we achieve our goal in the match”

Asked what does he think about the other match played at the same time between Argentina and Canada and what does he hope the result would be?, He pointed out that it does not matter to him what is the outcome of that match. “For me , the match against Austrian is what matters. We MUST win this one. I would not even bother to check the results of the other game as I want to focus completely at the task in our hands, not a one that we have no control on” Doustimehr said.

Regarding the attendance and the fans, the coach said he was quite impressed by the support of the Iranian fans in Dubai and he is very grateful for them for creating such a great atmosphere. “Our fans inspired us and we sincerely hope that similar numbers of supporters travel to Al Ain for this crucial match. We are very much counting on their support.”

Doustimehr , stressed upon the role of the fans and attendance in the stadiums. He said he was satisfied by the attendance figure in Dubai” Football does not mean much without fans, even if all the major players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Maradona and Pele lead two teams to play a game, under coaching of the likes of Ferguson and Jose Mourinho, without the fans such match is tasteless and loses all it value.”

“I am very pleased with our fans. In General the attendance of our matches have been very good, with a good mixture of Iranians , Arab and expatriate fans from different communities present.  Iran had a good support and hopefully they will come to Al Ain and support us again”

The last group matches on Friday will be played at the same time in Dubai , where Argentina will face Canada, and Al Ain where Austria will face Iran. Argentina is leading the table with 4 points , while Iran is third with 2 points from two matches. A win for Iran by any margin will assure them of qualification. Any other result will mean they have to wait for the result of the other groups.
