Iran Football federation regrets targetting of Messi’s facebook page.

Tehran

Mohammad Reza Molla Mohammad , the Cultural administrator of Iran’s football federation (FFIRI) has regretted the action of some delinquent juveniles who posted derogatory remarks on Lionel Messi’s facebook page.

In the aftermath of the FIFA World Cup draw 2014 carried on Friday, Iran was drawn in the same group as Argentina, which prompted some of the less educated so-called Iran fans to post some childish nonsense which has nothing to do with football.

Molla Mohammad said that the Football federation puts a lot of emphasis on sportsmanship plus civilized and courteous behavior reflecting the culture of the proud nation. “

In a statement published in FFIRI website in Farsi , Molla Mohammad  said “As a country , we have certain cultural , social and religious values that we stick by and form the pillar of our society. We have lots of respect to all our opponents in the World Cup , and while we appreciate and understand rivalry and competition , we condemn such insulting behaviour by some fans against one of the greatest football players in the world. “

“Lionel Messi is a phenomenon and we are proud that we will play against him and his team in the World Cup. What has been said by some fans has nothing to do with Iran and Iranians. Messi has our respect and our admiration.”

Quotes after the World Cup draw.

The reaction to the FIFA World Cup 2014 draw was mixed and to a certain extent cautions. With Team Melli being in the same group as Lionel Messi’s Argentina, no one in his right mind will think of this group as an easy passage to the next round.

Carlos Queiroz with his usual non-revealing diplomatic statements did not give away much , preferring to use diplomacy. “It is an honor . It is just for us to enjoy now. We will be playing against the best in the world and that is a great opportunity for us to progress and be a better team” The Portuguese coach said,

While Queiroz statement was measured and cautious, his counterpart coach in the group, Safet Sucic’s statement , was cheeky. Bosnia-Herzegovina’s coach had the audacity to cal Iran, only weak team group, while Iran has flogged and comprehensively defeated his Bosnian team with all their star including Dzeko , 3-2 in Bosnia.  “We can’t be unhappy despite the fact that we are in a group with Argentina, one of the title favorites. Of the other teams, only Iran is weaker” The Bosnian coach said.
Of the other teams, only Iran is weaker
Safet Sucic, coach of Bosnia-Herzegovina

Daniel Amokachi , The coach of Nigeria said “Argentina are world power , but we cannot afford to underestimate Iran or Bosnia”

While Argentina coach , clearly feeling relieved that he was not given the group of death . Alejandro Sabella , said “We did not go into the group of death, there are other groups which are more complicated and more difficult” . The Argentine coach refused to comment on the other teams of the group.

The local comments in Iran was also a mixture of comments depending on the involvement of the people quoted.

World Cup 2014 schedule
World Cup 2014 schedule

One of the former Team Melli coaches, Mansour Pourhaidary who is currently is the technical director of Esteghlal, does not believe that Team Melli will qualify to the next round. “We have to  seize fooling the fans into believing that Team Melli will qualify against much better teams who have  prepared themselves much better , particularly playing Friendly games and have a superior training schemes than ours.”

Karim Bagheri , the former Captain of Team Melli was not very optimistic about Iran chances of qualifying considering the preparations of the team so far and lack of Practice friendly matches. Bagheri however said that “our players should not only concentrate on playing against Messi and facing Argentina, as the two other teams of the group  are quite powerful and have ambitions of qualifying in their own right.”

From the current squad, Ando Teymourian sounded quite confident although not too complacent. Teymourian who was one of the pivotal players in Iran’s qualification said ‘We do not intend to go to Brazil as tourists.   We have to demonstrate  our grit and resolve in the world cup.” For Teymourian , it will be his second participation in the world Cup after the 2006 edition. He was thankful for the draw and said that was much better than other Asian teams especially Australia. “I could not have imagined my condition if we were drawn in the same group as the World Champions  Spain  and runners up  the Netherlands they way Australia has been drawn”

A historical look at Iran opponets in World Cup 2014

If the record books is anything to go by , Team Melli should not be fearing the opposition in Group F of the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014, The draw that was held earlier this evening has placed Iran in the same group with Argentina, Bosnia and Nigeria,

Going through the records of matches between Iran and the three teams, interesting and ironic facts emerge. Team Melli has the distinction of being the first team to meet Bosnia national team in 1993 after the country’s independence from Former Yugoslavia. FIFA however, refused to recognize that match as Bosnia was not a FIFA member at the time.

Iran and Bosnia- Herzegovina had cordial and friendly relations at all levels throughout the years . In all the two countries have played 5 times with Iran winning 4 and drawing one. The first match is not included in this data because it wasn’t considered an official recognized match.  The best overall results of Team Melli against a European team are against Bosnia with two significant results of 5-2 and a 4-0 wins.

With Bosnia rapid progress in the European football including producing World Class players such as Hasan Salihamidžić and Edin Džeko,, the Eastern European team has not managed to defeat Iran in any game. The last match in Sarajevo ended in a 2-3 win for Team Melli with the goals scored by  Masoud SHOJAEI (79), Arash BORHANI (86) and Andranik TEYMOURIAN (93). Bosnia scored by perhaps their greatest ever forward,   Edin Džeko (52)(65) who currently plays for Manchester City.

The other interesting fact with Bosnia is that both teams had a coach which took them on the brink of the World Cup. Miroslav ‘Ciro’ Blažević, the charismatic Croatian coach , lead Team Melli to the 2002 play-off against the Republic of Ireland and lost the two legged series with the smallest of margins.

8 years later  Blažević, found himself in the same situation with Bosnia when he led them to a play off match against Portugal for the World Cup 2010. Bosnia and  Blažević, again lost the series in a narrow 1-0 margin. In that year Edin Džeko scored 9 goals in the qualifying rounds.

Team Melli played a lone match against Nigeria and Argentina. The match against Nigeria in Hong Kong was in the Carlsberg Cup. The 4 side tournament was in preparation for Iran’s participation in the FIFA World Cup 1998. Iran already played against the powerful Uruguay team earlier on and was leading by an Ali Smaereh goal until Golmohammady scored an own goal 7 minutes before time to make it 1-1. The penalty shootout went Uruguay’s way and Iran had to play Nigeria in the 3rd place match. Despite Team Melli playing a much better game against the Africans, they failed to capitalize on their many scoring chances while Nigeria pounced on one of their chances to score the only game of the match and the winner.

.The match that really stands out amongst this series is the only one played against Argentina is the Santiago Bernabu stadium , the home of Real Madrid. In 1977 Iran was invited for this 65th anniversary celebration to paly in a 4 side tournament that also included  Argentina and Algeria national teams . The first match was against the Argentinians , the host of next year’s World Cup. The team that Iran faced was the core of the Argentina team that won the world cup a year later including the likes of  TARANTINI
OLGUIN ,  ARDILES , VILLA  , HOUSEMAN , LUQUE and BERTONI .

Argentina lead through a Daniel Bertoni penalty but Team Melli played one of its best matches on record leading Argentina to defend desperately against onslaughts of offensive moves lead by the brilliant Hassan Rowshan and Adelkhani. Team Melli eventually got its reward when Mohammad Sadeghi scored with 11 minutes to go. Both Hassan Nazari and Rowshan came close to scoring a winner for Iran , but the match ended in a draw for Iran to record a famous result and with it the attention  of World Football observers.

Many European journalist took notice and started looking at Iran football at a time when Aisa was the minnows of World football and its team were the punching box for the European and Latin American teams. With a draw against the powerful Argentines , the future World Cup winner, Team Melli endeared itself to many football fans and journalist in the world.

Interestingly enough , Iran played both Argentina and Nigeria in the last FIFA U-17 World Cup championship in the UAE last october. The match against Argentina finsihed 1-1 in the group stages , while the Nigerians , who went on to win the title were too hot for Iran at the Khalifa Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain racking up three goals in the first half en route to a 4-1 win in the Round of 16.

In 2014 , Iran will be playing these three teams with a proud record. Argentina has the best player in the world in its team and a number of World class players, but then again it was a similar situation  nearly 4 decades ago when Team Melli faced the future champion and came out with a proud result. There is no reason that Team Melli should not repeat that feat. The biggest obstacle will be the psychological hurdle.

World Cup 2014 schedule
World Cup 2014 schedule

The World Cup has been drawn and Team Melli in a tough but not impossible group.

Argentina ,  two times World Cup champion with the greatest footballer in the world , Bosnia-Herzegovina  , the new comers to the world cup and

Nigeria , the African champions join Iran in Group F of the world cup.

IRAN-group-f

The clock is ticking – World Cup draw.

The clock is ticking as the football world is waiting in suspense for the draw on Friday. FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014 promises to be the greatest show on earth and Team Melli is proudly taking part amongst the elite of world football.

Iran is in pot 3 of the draw, with each of the six group

FIFA confirmed the procedure that will govern the selection of the eight groups for the 2014 World Cup.

At present, all 32 teams are seeded into four pots, and one team from each will be selected to form a group. This will happen eight times, but with a caveat: No more than two European sides and one South American side can go into the same group.

Not surprisingly, Pot 1 contains the eight highest-ranked teams according to the October FIFA rankings. In Pot 2 are the five African representatives, as well as Chile and Ecuador. Pot 3 consists of the AFC and CONCACAF participants, and the remaining nine European nations are bundled into Pot 4.

There will be a pre-draw on Friday to move one of the nine into Pot 2, which currently consists of just seven teams.

It’s because of this quirk that FIFA have also created a temporary Pot X populated by the four South American outfits in Pot 1: Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay. The three that are not drawn against the European side that moves to Pot 2 will go back into Pot 1.

Iran flag large

Leaving aside the complexity of this World Cup draw, what is certain for Iran is that it will not be grouped with the Asian teams or with United States, Mexico, Costa Rica and Honduras. As such , Team Melli will not have the chance to play another thriller against USA similar to the famous World Cup 1998 encounter in Lyon where Iran won its first and only match in the 3 participation in the World Cup finals.

This grouping will also deprive Iran from a revenge match against Mexico which beat Team Melli in Nuremburg during the World Cup 20-06 in Germany.

Depend on the luck of the draw, Team Melli could end up in an impossible group where qualification to the next round could be more like a dream, or it might stand a very good chance if the teams in the group are close to its own level.

An impossible group would be something like Brazil , Chile , Iran and Italy. Such grouping will certainly be called a group of death as it will have three of the most in form teams in the world. The 3 star studded teams will fight quite hard for qualification and look at Iran to be a platform or punching box.

On the other hand , a draw for a group containing Switzerland, Cameroon , Iran and Russia, will be a mouthwatering chance for the proud Persian to make an impact. Not that the group can be called easy as both the European teams are quite strong and have played some brilliant matches, however , nether Switzerland nor Russia have any World Cup pedigree and that will be easier for Team Melli to tackle. Cameroon has lost quite a bit of its edge lately despite the return of the troublemaker Samuel Eto.

In Iran, the views are mixed. Ando Teymourian does not wish to be grouped with strong teams, while Head of the League Committee, Mehdi Taj hopes that Team Melli is group with the strongest teams in the competition. Each person has his own reasoning, but comes the kick off on June next year, these calculations and predictions might mean nothing. Football is a strange game and results are not always to forms and per-calculated.

In any case, we do hope that Team Melli gets a fair draw.

Kaffashian “We don have to play against strong teams in the friendly matches”

Ali Kaffashian Iran’s Football Federation President, commenting on the plans for Team Melli said “With minimal cost we will implement the best program before the World Cup. Carlos Queiroz and his coaching team are aware of this issue and do not believe that we have to play against famous and strong teams. The objective is to find value in these friendly matches as that is what is important for us. The friendly matches must be useful.” (…)

In essence, Kaffashian once again has hinted that his administration is not willing to spend big bucks on friendly matches and he cited Queiroz as not being an advocate of playing quality teams !

As such , Iran is taking a different path to the rest of the Asian teams which qualified to the World Cup. Japan , Australia and South Korea have already played major friendly games with European and Latin American top teams. No doubt, their preparation in the next six months will include more of these quality friendly games. Team Melli has failed to arrange any friendly matches since its qualification was confirmed, six months ago.

The irony is that Ali Kaffashian has noted that Team Melli expenses will be covered by the federation but will also be receiving a substantial financial support from FIFA to prepare for the World Cup. However , Kaffashian reiterated that the arranging and selecting of friendly matches will all depend on the Friday’s World Cup draw and which group Iran will be in.

The President of the FFIRI also mentioned the official Team Melli kit is awaiting Carlos Queiroz approval “As soon as Queiroz approves it , we will send the samples of Team Melli kit to FIFA” Kaffashian said “The official launch of the Team Melli kit will be carried out in a ceremony attended by dignitaries and UHL Sport representatives.”

Players selections

It transpired that Queiroz used more experienced players as the average age of the squad was quite high 29.08 years, while mainly selecting players from the two most popular teams in Iran Perspolis and Esteghlal who had the lion share of the players , 12 and 10 respectively. In the season when the qualification started, Perspolis ended the season at 12th place, it worst ranking in the league , while Esteghlal were 3rd.

Next season of the WC qualifying rounds, 2012/13 Perspolis fared slightly better ending the season at 7th place in the table , while Esteghlal won the championship title.

Team Melli had 8 foreign clubs players on its list, with players such as Ghoochannejad and Shojaei playing for two clubs during the campaign.

Half of the players in this campaign were 30 years or older (18 out of 36 players) while only 3 player were 25 years or younger (less than 1%).

If the same core of the squad will be used in next year’s final rounds of the World Cup, the average age of the team will rise to 30 years or more.

Ashkan Dejagah goal not enough to save Fulham

Team Melli Midfield Dynamo scored for his club Fulham on Wednesday night but was unable to save his club from defeat against Tottenham. The London Derby match ended 2-1 in favor of Tottenham.

Masked Man strikes to down Fulham It was a night of firsts at Craven Cottage as Ashkan Dejagah scored his first Premier League goal to put Fulham in front, only to see his celebrations cut short by debut League goals from the young Lewis Holtby and Vlad Chirches, still sporting a plastic mask from the broken nose he sustained in November.

A new look Fulham side, led by the recently appointed Meulensteen, headed into the game having made 7 changes from the side that lost to West Ham on the weekend. The changes seemed to have the desired effect as Fulham pegged back Spurs in the first 15 minutes of the game despite not having the lion’s share of possession. The first chance of the night fell to the newly restored Jermaine Defoe who forced a neat but easy save from Steklenburg after breaking through the Fulham back line. Fulham were not to be outdone however and Berbatov found himself clean through in the Spurs area only to see his usually near perfect touch desert him allowing Lloris to easily collect the ball without ever being in real danger.

Queiroz visits Corinthians Club camp in Brazil

Mehdi Mohammad Nabi and Carlos Queiroz will be representing Iran in the Friday FIFA World Cup 2014 draw. The pair have already arrived in Brazil ahead of time and visited Corinthians club camp where they were met by the famous Ex Brazilian Footballer Edu.

Edu Gaspar , Ex- Brazil National team and Arsenal , spent four years at Highbury, winning the Premier League title twice and the FA Cup three times. His final game for the Gunners came as they collected their last trophy in the 2005 FA Cup final.

In the meeting on Tuesday, both sides agreed on several undisclosed matters. Mohammad Nabi also met with Corinthians vice president and discussed means of cooperation between the Football Federation of Iran and the Brazilian side.

Pot 1 is comprised of host nation Brazil and the seven top-ranked teams from FIFA’s October rankings. These will be the headline squads for each group, and those outside it will likely be rooting for a spot alongside Switzerland, or at least to avoid Brazil, Spain, Germany or Argentina.

At the outset, Pot 2 only has seven teams, made up of national teams from Africa and the South American squads not in Pot 1. Eventually, another European team will be drawn into this pot, but there will be a separate “Pot X” created to avoid three teams from UEFA ending up in the same group.

Finally, the fourth pot is all of the remaining European teams. Since there are nine sides, it creates an imbalance that will get sorted out when one is drawn into Pot 2. But again, FIFA is going to immediately draw a South American team from “Pot X” and European team together to avoid three UEFA teams ending up together, as explained during the press conference.
