Team Melli falls short in Bahrain

Bahrain once again inflicted injury to Iranian pride by beating Team Melli 1-0 today in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers in the match played at the National Stadium in Riffa.

The solitary goal scored by Bahrain’s Mohammed Al-Hardan in the 65th minute from a penalty kick as a result of a foul committed by Majid Hosseini on the Bahraini player in the box.

It was the first defeat for Wilmots since he took over from Carlos Queiroz. The defeat came right after  14-0 win against Cambodia in Azadi. Team Melli performance was lethargic and lacked creativity. A few of the regular shortfalls were observed once again in this match including some disciplinary issues, surprisingly this time by the Captain of the team Ehsan Hajsafi who was guilty of being temperamental and unnecessary vocal after being awarded a yellow card. Not a good example for a person who should lead by example.

Azmoun, by now well-known for his hot temperament and poor discipline, was seconds away from receiving two consecutive yellow cards and subsequent dismissal after a vehement protest against the Uzbek referee for not calling a penalty. The Uzbek referee V. Kovalenko seemed to be right on both calls.

The match played in sweltering heat and high humidity, was slow to take shape. Both teams seemed to conserve energy for better endurance. By the 15th minute, both teams players’ jerseys were wet as if were taken fresh out of water. Naturally, the hosts who are used to this sort of weather ¾ of the year managed to acclimatize better under the circumstances.

Marc Wilmots, elected to start with 3 forwards upfront, a plan that did not yield well. Karim Ansarifard, the 4 goal hero of last Thursday, was virtually just a bystander figure who did not seem to have turned up for the game. He was substituted in the 70th minute while Wilmots could have done much better if that substitution was done earlier.

There was very little to differentiate between the two teams as their defences did not have many problems against the opposition forwards. However, the trio Azmoun, Taremi and Ansarifard were quite disappointing. Whatever balls that reached the veteran Bahrain goalkeeper Seyed Mohammaed Jaffar was dealt with by him.

Omid Ebrahimi was the dynamo of the team and most of the offensive moves were started by his excellent distributions. However, Ebrahimi lacked support in the midfield as neither Hajsafi or Mohebi could add value to the schemer in the centre of the field. Wilmots would have been better off adding another specialized midfielder like Noorollahi using four players for better control of the midfield. The flanks did not operate well either as Milad Mohammadi and Ramin Rezaeian were limited in their action.

The defence line was fine but Majid Hosseini committed two critical errors, one of which cost Iran the game. In the first instance, the young central defender left a lot of space for Bahrain forward, but for his poor finishing, the host could have taken the lead much earlier. In the second, his poor position again and lunging at the Bahraini forward, cost the penalty.

The result takes Bahrain to the top of the group along with Iraq with 7 points while Iran with 6 points drops to 3rd. It was more than a disappointing result with several tactical errors observed. Wilmots need to seriously look at his lineup that lacked balanced. This mentality of an all-out offensive game plan must not obscure his vision and should be revisited.  Cracks began to appear early in the match as teams such as Bahrain and Iraq can exploit them.  the Belgian need to go back to the drawing board.

Iran’s next game is in one month’s time away to Iraq.

Tough battle for Team Melli in Bahrain.

the-afc.com

Kuala Lumpur:

After a rampant display on Matchday Three of the Asian Qualifiers, Group C leaders the Islamic Republic of Iran side are braced for their toughest test yet when they travel to play Bahrain in Manama on Tuesday.

The Iranians, who overcame Cambodia 14-0 last time out to make it two wins from two en route to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023, are currently two points clear of Iraq who are scheduled to tackle Cambodia.

BAHRAIN vs IR IRAN

On a high following last week’s defeat of Cambodia, Iran will look to add yet more momentum to their Asian Qualifiers campaign when they take on Bahrain.

Karim Ansarifard scored four times and the ever-impressive Sardar Azmoun bagged a hat-trick as Iran sealed a comfortable victory against their Southeast Asian opponents at the Azadi Stadium, one which saw Team Melli add to the 2-0 win they recorded in Hong Kong on Matchday One.

Although delighted with his side’s display, Iran head coach Marc Wilmots has nevertheless been quick to point out that his charges must maintain their focus ahead of what promises to be a thrilling encounter in the Bahrain capital.

“We have an important match with Bahrain on Tuesday and we need to keep our concentration. We want three points. We haven’t done anything yet,” said the Belgian tactician.

Third-placed Bahrain, meanwhile, heads into the match aiming to register the first win over Iran since their 4-2 friendly success in 2009.

The Bahrainis are, though, unbeaten thus far and appear set to provide a stern test of Iran’s credentials, especially if midfielder Komail Al Aswad can continue the fine form which has seen him net two goals in as many games. The veteran Ismaeil Abdul-Latif sustained an injury in the friendly loss to Azerbaijan and expected to be sidelined for the match.

In the Iranian camp, despite the slight knock in the Cambodia match, it is believed that Sardar Azmoun has fully recovered although Ashkan Dejagah is still doubtful for the match.

Team Melli records vs. Bahrain

Omid team to play a friendly vs Australia in Doha.

Iran’s Omid team landed in Doha’s Hamad Internationa; Airport ahead of the friendly match on Monday against its Australian counterpart.

The match in Al Duhail Stadium at 18:15 local time will be the second under the newly appointed coach Hamid Estili. A few days back Estili lead the team against Padidah (shahr Khodro) which ended in a 1-1 draw.

As part of their visit, Mr. Mehrdad Masoudi took the group on a tour of the local organizing committee of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 facilities where the players and the administrators observe the developments and the work of the committee in the preparation for the next world cup.

On a separate note, it has been announced that Amir Hossein Peyrovani will join the coaching team of Omid Team soon.

Mehdi Taj has said that the Technical Committee of the federation has offered the job of coaching the Omid Team to several local candidates like Yahya Gol Mohammadi, Hossein Faraki, Amir Ghalehnoei, Mehdi MahdaviKia and Vahid Hashemian were among the options considered, but they all turned down the job. Estili himself did not accept any coaching capacity in the Omid Team.

“Finally, we reached a conclusion that Majidi was the best candidate and after some time the technical committee of the federation was in need of changes in the technical staff of the Omid team. Estilli was finally selected by the technical committee “.

The head of the Iranian Football Federation said “soon Amir Hossein Peyrovani will be added to the coaching team. I have a lot of hope for this team and Iran’s chances are better than any other opponent and we have a great chance of qualifying for the Olympics and I want the Ministry of Sport and the National Olympic Committee to support it even more,” said Mehdi Taj. He did not specify what added support the team requires beyond the one that was awarded.

Ronaldo slowly approach Ali Daei’s goal scoring record.

Portuguese national team striker Cristiano Ronaldo has come one step closer to Ali Daei’s record with the goal he scored against Luxembourg.

In one of the Euro qualifiers last night, the Portuguese national team defeated Luxembourg by three goals in Lisbon. Portugal’s second goal was scored by Cristiano Ronaldo. With this goal, Ronaldo’s increased his national goalscoring number to 94 to reduce the margin with Ali Daei for the title of World Top International scorer to 15.

This has been widely reflected in world media, including FIFA itself. FIFA’s official account last night reported the official FIFA figures after Ronaldo scored reminded Mr Goli Ali Daei of the number of goals he and Ronaldo scored.

Daei and Ronaldo have met once in the match between Iran and Portugal during the FIFA World Cup Germany 2006. The match in Frankfurt ended 2-0 to Portugal.

Iranian Females in Azadi

FIFA President’s statement on today’s match in Tehran

10.Oct.2019

FIFA.com

For the first time in nearly 40 years, several thousand women have been allowed into a stadium in IR Iran to watch a football match played by men.

This is a very positive step forward, and one which FIFA, and especially Iranian girls and women, have been eagerly waiting for. The passion, joy and enthusiasm they showed today was remarkable to see and encourages us even more to continue the path we have started. History teaches us that progress comes in stages and this is just the beginning of a journey.

Consequently, FIFA now looks more than ever towards a future when ALL girls and women wishing to attend football matches in IR Iran will be free to do so, and in a safe environment.

There can be no stopping or turning back now.

I would like to thank both the IR Iran FA, the AFC and the authorities involved for their efforts and cooperation. FIFA will continue to work closely with them, to help ensure that the right thing is done, which is to allow all fans, irrespective of gender, to have the chance to go to the stadiums and enjoy a game of football. Since I arrived at FIFA, we fight to see this objective fulfilled.

But, above all, today I want to say a very big thank you and record our utmost respect to all of the Iranian girls and women who courageously stood and are standing up for their rights.

Team Melli slaughter Cambodia.

in a memorial day in Iranian football Team, Melli defeated hapless Cambodia 14-0 in the qualifying rounds of FIFA World Cup 2022 and the AFC Asian Cup 2023. The match also was the first where females were allowed to enter football stadiums.

Team Melli opened the scoring early in the 4th minute by a spectacular long-range shoot by Ahmad Nourallahi after which the floodgates were simply opened, The first half ended 7-0, in the second Team Melli added another 7 to increase the Tally to 14 goals.

Karim Ansarifard scored 4 goals, Sardar Azmoun scored a hat trick, Mehdi Taremi and debutant Mohammad Mohebi both scored a brace while the other debutant Mehrdad Mohammadi also scored a goal While Kanani-Zadegan and Nouralahi made it 14.

While Marc Wilmots has already made it clear that his style will be an offensive one, not many believed that Team Melli will annihilate their guests with such a margin.

Two events in the match would have spoilt the result of the match. the first one was the reckless penalty that Beiranvand conceded but he remedied his error by saving the subsequent penalty kick,

The other was a more serious one occurred while Iran was leading 12-0.  on an attack on the Cambodia goal, Morteza Pouraliganji came rushing with raised his foot dangerously high on the cross while Cambodia keeper Keo Soksela had the ball safely in his possession. Pouraliganji foot contacted the keeper who fell in agony. It was a straight red card for the Team Melli defender but surprisingly the Indian referee only pulled a yellow card.!

Those two fouls were uncalled for. While against a team such as Cambodia, it would have made little difference, such silly fouls could be costly against stronger teams. It needs to be addressed by the coaching staff.

Azmoun “We must not be complacent against Cambodia”

Team Melli team striker says he and his teammates should be highly focused against Cambodia to earn 3 points. Sardar Azmoun added, “It might not be a difficult game for us, but we should not lose concentration because three points are vitally important for us.”

“Bahrain and Iraq tied their match, that was a good result for us, and we have to play this one with great focus in an offensive game to get all the three points, it is important for us not to be complacent.

Zenit St Petersburg’s forward commented on the eagerness of the forward line to play an offensive game and the praise bestowed on him by Ali Daei, “That the expectations are quite high is both bad and good in some ways. It raises my confidence when people talk about me and express their admiration”

He continued: “Ali Daei is my role model and I always have respect for him. Now I have healthy competition and Ali Daei has records that I dream to achieve with great motivation to reach them. I am glad that Mr Daei and MahdaviKia encouraged me and had some good words about me. These two are the greats of Asia, and Mr Daei is the world’s top scorer and we have to make a statue of gold of him. If he had been born elsewhere he would have been respected much more than this.”

Demand for Cambodia match by females overtakes male fans.

While Team Melli will face Cambodia at Azadi Stadium on Thursday evening, women have bought more tickets than men up to this Wednesday morning according to the latest figures on electronic ticket sales.

Team Melli is playing its second match in the group and the first home game at  Azadi Stadium as part of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022  Group Qualifier.

Out of a total of about 75,000 seats available for sale, only 2500 eTickets were bought by male spectators. E-ticketing started on Thursday, October 5th at 9 pm, from the moment the e-ticketing began females purchased 3500 tickets. It is clear that females were eager to grab the tickets fearing high demand on the limited number of seats available to them.

In the one week that had passed since the launch of the electronic ticketing system. 6,000 seats were sold, however, the actual attendance is expected to be much higher with last-minute purchases.

The 100,000 capacity Azadi Stadium is limited to 75,000 spectators. This restriction is due to safety concerns and the number of seats installed.

The foreign press has wrongly reported that Iran-Cambodia match on Thursday is the first time that females will be allowed to attend a football match in Iran since the revolution. The fact is, females have attended many games before after the authorities have eased that restriction on several occasions without dispensing of the official restrictions which were still practised until recently. There is no clear cut laws in Iran that prevent women from attending matches. Volleyball has the highest number of female attendance in all sports in Iran.

aورزشگاه آزادی Meanwhile, horde of foreign media is attending the match as Iran has been under scrutiny for banning women from stadiums. The bans are not a football federation or government mandate but powerful clerics have been publically calling for such ban arguing that females must be shielded from masculine atmosphere and sight of semi-clad men. Iranian females have always been actively participating in social activities without any restrictions including the right to drive, working in a mixed environment and travelling on their own. The Islamic revolution has put many restrictions on women one of which is the forceful wearing of headscarves and full-body cladding.

For this match, with the world and particularly FIFA the governing body watching closely, the authorities seem to have prepared quite well for the female entrance to Azadi with even special parking reserved for female drivers.  There also special washrooms and facilities for females only. The parking in  Azadi, one of the more difficult parts of attending a match there, in itself would have encouraged more female attendance.
