Lothar Matthaus denies seeking Team Melli’s job.

Lothar Matthaus has denied reports that he is set to negotiate with the Iranian football officials to take charge of the team.

Germany’s most capped player has been reportedly linked with a move to coach Team Melli .

Matthaus has been without a team since he was sacked as Bulgaria coach after a dismal Euro 2012 qualifying campaign. “I will travel to Tehran on Wednesday to record a television program about football. I’ve never been there, it should be a very beautiful city,” Sky TV expert Lothar Matthaeus said in an interview with Die Welt on Tuesday.

“I read in the papers that I am looking for a coaching job, but I am very satisfied with my life,” former Bayern Munich midfielder stated.

The 52-year-old German previously coached the Hungarian national team and the clubs Rapid Wien, Partizan Belgrade, Red Bull Salzburg, and Atletico Paranaense. Lothar Matthaus has won more Germany caps than anyone else, 150, and went to nine major international tournaments, captaining the 1990 World Cup-winning team.

It has emerged over the past month that Iran’s Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz is not going to extend his contract after the 2014 World Cup., hence the link with Team Melli job.

Matthaus appeared in a TV program along with Ali Daei , Persepolis coach. He admitted that he had very little knowledge about Iran’s football and hence he is not qualified to speak as an expert in Iranian chances in the World Cup. However, Matthaus sad that the first match against Nigeria could seal the fate of Iran and in case of a win , qualification to the next round is a great possibility.

Matthaus advised Iran to play against big teams in order to be recognized internationally and the Iranian players get a chance to play abroad. “If Iran wants t be counted, it has to play friendly matches against big team like  Germany and Argentina.” The ex-Captain of Germany said in the TV program.

Since Carlos Queiroz took over coaching of Team Melli in 011, Team Melli has rarely played friendly against powerful teams and was mostly content with playing mediocre African Teams well below its own FIFA ranking.
