Heavy defeat for Team Melli U-22 against Italy

Roma 20/11/2013

Italy National Under 20 team defeated Iran U-22 5-0  in today’s friendly match at the “G. Chiggiato” stadium in Caorle.  Iran team is setting a 6 days training camp in Italy in preparation for the upcoming Asian Championship in Oman.  Iran’s team is under the coaching of Ali Doustimeher , while Mehdi Mahdavikia is the technical director of the team.

Italy goals were scored by M. Ricci  25 ‘, Padovan  71’ and 73 ‘, L. Strong  77 ‘and Rossetti  92’.

“I was interested to see the progress of this group ” said Evani ” that is working well and he really wants to do. Today I tried some changes (their debut Provedel, Dell’Orco, Garritano, Frediani, Belloni and Bernardeschi, ed)  who provided good results and gave good answers, I have seen some progress and this bodes well for me. In Italy there are interesting young players and you have to give them confidence. “

The Italian team, after the tie against Germany in the “Four Nations” tournament, is coached by Alberico Evani who, for the occasion, has called 25 players, 6 for the first time (Provedel, Dell’Orco, Garritano, Frediani, Belloni and Bernardeschi). In October of last year, the Under 20 teams of Italy and Iran underwrote a coopration agreement and played a friendly match in Cervia that was won 4-2 by Italy, thanks to two goals by Politano, and one goal each by Vassallo and Piscitella.

List of Italian players called for the match:

Goalkeepers: Di Gennaro (Cittadella), Pigliacelli (Pescara), Provedel (Pisa);
Defenders: Pecorini (Cittadella), Biraschi (Grosseto), De Col (Virtus Lanciano), Dell’Orco (Feralpi Salò), Goldaniga (Pisa), Chiosa (Bari), Camigliano (Brescia), Nava (Novara);
Midfielders: Ricci M. (Grosseto), Garritano (Cesena), Cataldi (Crotone), Verre (Città di Palermo), Sampietro (Pisa), Faragò (Novara), Frediani (L’Aquila), Belloni (Modena), Bernardeschi (Crotone), Palma (Nocerina);
Forwards: Forte L. (Varese), Gomez (Pro Vercelli), Rosseti (Siena), Padovan (Pescara).

Iran Beach soccer stuns the Brazilians

Iran continued their superb run with their second scalp of Samsung Beach Soccer Intercontinental competition with a gutsy 3-1 tie-breaker win after the game finished 4-4 against multiple world champions Brazil in an exciting Group B encounter.

The competition is being played in the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) on Wednesday night

Keeping Asian champions Iran in the fray all through the match was goalkeeper Seyed Peyman Hosseinilargani as he denied the talented Brazilians.

The goalkeeper was crucial in the shootout, saving the second penalty from Jose da Silva to stun Brazil who are desperate to add the Intercontinental Cup to their collection.

The Iranian Beach Soccer team also defeated world champion Russia in Group B on Tuesday.
Marco Octavio’s men will play Italy on Thursday.
Group A consists of the UAE (host), Switzerland, Morocco and Mexico.

Meanwhile, Russia got their campaign back on track with a 6-3 win over Italy in a Group B match to keep their hopes alive for the fourth and final semi-final spot. The group is wide open as Iran have four points after winning both their matches in the tie-breaker.

Russia, who lost to the Asian champions on Tuesday, have three points following their win over Italy.

But on the final day of preliminary round matches, the world and defending champions will have to defeat Brazil to secure their spot in the last four stages.

SAMSUNG-BS---DUBAI-2013---H02

Team Melli scores 4 and qualifies for Asian Cup 2015.

Team Melli qualified for the AFC Asian Cup the  for a record 13th time when they defeated Lebanon 4-1 in Beirut.

In a match overshadowed by a terrorist attack earlier that day in south of Beirut near the Iranian Embassy , which prompted the authorities to ban the spectators from entering the stadium fearing more attacks.

Carlos Queiroz opted to start this match with a different line up, with Teymourian, Jabbari, Hajsafy and Montazzeri being rested. Alireza Jahanbakhash who scored Iran’s 3rd goal against Thailand, earned himself a starting role and looked quite lively on the right. The young player had a couple of good runs on the Lebanese defenders..

The first half ended 0-1 in the first half, Team Melli going ahead late in the half (minute 38) when central defender Amir Hossein Sadeghi towered over all the Lebanese defenders to head home from Masoud Shojaei’s corner.

In the second half, the floodgates opened early, when Ashkan Dejagah volleyed powerfully from a nice footwork on the right flank by Reza Ghoochannejad in minute 50.

4 minutes later , Masoud Shojaei was fouled by the Lebanese defender Ali Hammam in the penalty box.

The Chinese referee had no hesitation whistling for a penalty which Captain Nekounam scored  recording his 37th career goal for Team Melli.

The rout ended in the 63rd minute when the prolific Reza Ghoochannejad continued his amazing scoring record for Team Melli by scoring Iran’s 4th goal from an assist by Shojaei.

With the match in the bag, Queiroz made three substitution including bringing in Maziyar Zare to play as a central defender in place of Hosseini. Although Iran had more of the ball against a demoralized Lebanese team, there were many moments of slack passing by Iranian players and some complacency started developing.

However, it was poor coverage and the ease of dribbling past defenders that allowed Lebanon to score a consolation goal late in the match.

Lebanese winger Mohammed Haider went past 2 defenders with alarming ease before selling Beitashour short with a smart turn and shooting past Davari in an acute angle. The German-Iranian goalkeeper, starting his second game who had very little work to do during the whole match, failed to close and advance on the winger which enable him to slot the ball on the far corner.

Overall. it was a clinical performance by Team Melli , and except for the only goal scored conceded and some lazy and inaccurate passing , Team melli played one of it better games under Queiroz despite the concerns over security and the difficult circumstances off the field. Alireza Jahanbakhsh was quite promising with his runs on the flank. In his first start for the team , the ex Captain of Iran’s youth team , did not shy away from taking on defenders.

Iran, leading the table with 13 points after 5 matches, has qualified for the AFC Asian Cup Australia 2013 , along with Kuwait which defeated Thailand 3-1 in a match player in Kuwait at the same time.

Asian Cup 2015 (Qs) MD5: Lebanon 1-4 Iran

Published on Wednesday, 20 November 2013 02:09

Beirut: Three-time champions Iran confirmed their place at the 2015 AFC Asian Cup after ending Lebanon’s qualification hopes following a convincing 4-1 win in Group B on Tuesday.

Amirhossein Sadeghi opened the scoring just before half-time at Sports City Stadium before Askhan Dejagah, AFC Player of the Year nominee Javad Nekounam and Reza Ghoochannejhad struck in the second half as Iran unbeaten Iran recorded a fourth win five games.

And with Kuwait beating Thailand 3-1, Lebanon saw their hopes of a first AFC Asian Cup appearance since hosting the 2000 edition ended following a second defeat in Group B despite Mohamad Haidar’s late consolation.

Iran only needed to avoid defeat to seal their qualification, but took the lead six minutes before half-time as Sadeghi powered home an unstoppable towering header from a left wing corner.

And the visitors doubled their lead five minutes into the second half as Ghoochannejhad played a pass across the edge of the penalty area and Dejagah beat Lebanon goalkeeper Abbas Hassan with a composed first time finish.

Iran added a third four minutes later as Masoud Shojaei was pulled back by Ali Hamam inside the area and Nekounam confidently sent Hassan the wrong way from the resulting penalty.

And Iran’s fourth arrived four minutes after the hour mark as Shojaei’s deft chip played in Ghoochannejhad and the Belgium-based forward skipped past Hassan before poking the ball home from inside the six-yard area.

But despite seeing their qualification hopes ended, Lebanon’s night did end of a high note courtesy of Haidar superb individual goal with 11 minutes remaining.

Team Melli leads Lebanon in the first half.

Beirut

Team Melli is leading Lebanon 1-0 at the end of the first half of Group B AFC Asian Cup Qualifier. The only goal of the match came from a corner kick where AmirHossein Sadeghi towered over the Lebanese defenders and head powerfully into the net. The match is played with no spectators as a security precaution in the aftermath of toady’s suicidal bomb blast in the vicinity of the Iranian embassy in Beirut.

Carlos Queiroz opted to start this match with a different line up, with Teymourian, Jabbari, Hajsafy and Montazzeri being rested. Alireza Jahanbakhash who scored Iran’s 3rd goal against Thailand , earned himself a starting role and looked quite lively on the right. The young player had a couple of good runs with one good offensive long run , but shot marginally wide.

minute 34 Abbas Hassan GK saves from Haghighi rebounded shoot
minute 36  Bilal Najjarine committed a professional foul on Dehagah and recived a yellow card
minute 37 Ashakn Dejagah tripped inside the edge of the box and looked like a penalty , but Chinese referee waved play-on.
minute 38 AmirHossein Sadeghi scores from a corner by Masoud Shoajei
minute 45+1 Nekounam wasted a setter by Haghighi as he blasted over the bar.

It was a good and  lively half by both teams which was unfortunately suffered by the absence of the passionate Lebanese fans.

Lebanon Iran match to be held without spectators.

Iranian and Lebanon’s national football teams will play without spectators in a game which is scheduled for tonight in Beirut, ISNA news agency reported on Nov. 19.

Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has made the decision due to today’s bomb explosions in Beirut after a meeting with Lebanese security officials as well as representatives of Iran and Lebanon football federations, the report said.

According to the latest reports, there are 23 dead and 169 injured people as a result of two bomb explosions near the Iranian embassy in Beirut. The explosions happened this morning.

The explosion took place in an area in the south of Beirut, which is mainly controlled by the Iran-backed Shiite movement Hezbollah.

Iranian cultural attache Ebrahim Ansari died as a result of explosions.

Previous statement from Iranian embassy said that country’s ambassador to Lebanon and embassy staff are safe.
According to the Lebanese media, two suicide bombers are behind the attacks.

The suicide bombing had the signature of the Saudi backed Syrian rebel fighters who are engaged in a battle against Syrian Army. Most of the rebels are sunni-salfai jihadist who are well versed in suicide bombing and use it extensively in areas of conflict.

Down Memory Lane: Iran in 1978 World Cup

July & August 1978

Holland 3, Iran 0

     (Group Four)

HOLLAND began their bid for a place in  another World Cup final with an efficient if  not majestic performance against Iran in  Mendoza.

A hat-trick by Rob Rensenbrink, two of  them from the penalty spot, confirmed the  considerable gulf in class between themselves  and the Asian qualifiers.
Iran played neat, controlled football in  midfield and their defence was uncompromising in the tackle.   But they lacked pace and numbers up front  and all too quickly they found their attacks ‘stifled and the action back in their own half.
Without the agility and safe handling of  goalkeeper Hejazi they might have been  more comprehensively beaten.

Iran brought Roshan, still not fully  recovered from a knee ligament injury, into  their attack in the second half but he found  support rare and insufficient.  Holland, sluggish at the start, had two  narrow escapes in the first 16 minutes.
Sadeghi’s long range shot was deflected and  Jongbloed had to scamper across his line to  save at the foot of a post.
Then, with the Dutch appealing in vain for  offside Faraki raced clear on the right and this  time a slight deflection carried his cross-shot  behind for a corner.
Holland shrugged off those scrapes, began  to piece together their game and Iran found  themselves under siege.  But for all the pressure it was a break from  defence which set up the opening goal in the  40th minute. Reinier Van de Kerkhof ran  away on the right and Abdollahi brought him  down in the area.
Rensenbrink, untroubled by the whistles of   the crowd, calmly placed the ball inside the  left post.

Rensenbrink effectively clinched the match after 62 minutes when he climbed high at the far post to head the second.
He completed his hat-trick in the 79th minute with another penalty after a trip ended Rep’s meandering run.

        Scotland 1, Iran 1

              (Group Four)

A RESOURCEFUL and confidence Iran team rubbed salt into Scotland’s gaping World Cup wounds
After defeat by Peru , the Willie Johnston disgraced and stories of players living it up, the Scots desperately needed a morale-boosting victory. Instead they played miserably unable to bring rhythm or purpose to their game. Their midfield was always industrious, but rarely effective, while the attack was pitifully unproductive.

Iran started cautiously, clearly hoping to contain. They feared Scotland’s pace and strength and were quick to pull back reinforcements to the defense.

But despite giving away an own goal Iran came back powerfully, their self beleif swelled and they might even have a win. The crucial move by manager Heshmat Mohajerani was to bring Danaiefar into his midfield to counter the non-stop menace by Gemmill.

The tenacious little Iranian did precisely that and much more besides. He found time to create, push forward and then score the equaliser.
He had marvelous support from Mohammad Sadeghi who covered and chased as well as displaying the ball control and flair.

Yet it seemed Iran were destined for another disappointment when they went down to a crazy goal just before half-time.
Hartford played an innocuous-looking ball down the middle and Jordan chased more in hope than belief.  But Hejazi, aware of Jordan’s challenge and Eskandarian confused each other and the latter turned the ball into his own net.

On the hour, however, Iran equalized. Danaiefard went wide on the left and then when it seemed the angle would defy him, he whipped his shot between Rough and the post. Suddenly Iran sensed victory was there for the taking and two minutes later they should have gone ahead. Ghasemmpour raced away on his own but lost control and  Rough smothered.

Jordan had a header superbly saved by Hejazi at the foot of the post as Scotland produced a last rally. But a goal then would have been more than they deserved        and an injustice to Iran.

Peru 4 Iran 1

     (Group Four)

PERU clinched top place in Group Four with another spectacular but controversial victory against Iran.

The pace and penetration which destroyed Scotland in their opening match also proved too much for the Asia Oceania representatives.
But Iranian hopes virtually disappeared when they had their third and fourth penalties of the championship awarded against them.
Cubillas, that master executioner, duly converted both to add to Velasquez’s opening goal and Peru had a handsome 3-0 lead after 39 minutes.

Iran manager Heshmat Mohajerani demanded: “We have had four penalties given against us, is this justice? We didn’t come here claiming we would beat these teams but we have not been given a chance.”
“My players are sick because they didn’t think they deserved to lose so heavily. We lost the game but mainly we lost it to the referee. FIFA should have protected us.”
Certainly it appeared that the second penalty in the Holland match was awarded for a foul fractionally outside the area and that Polish referee Alojzy Jarguz was harsh with his first penalty decision of the Peru game.

The Iranians also have some justification in claiming they should have had a penalty themselves against Peru.
But despite their frustrations Iran pulled  back a goal just before half-time, Roshan’s low, first-time shot going in off the far post.

The alert little forward was unlucky not to have another after 58 minutes when Quiroga defied him with a superb double save.
Iran at that stage looked as if they had  finally found a cutting edge to their neat, controlled play and that they might provide us  with a tense finish.
Peru, however, produced another ounce of  effort and in the 78th minute Cubillas completed his hat-trick.

[su_label]POST MORTEM[/su_label]

THOUGH more had been expected of Iran than Tunisia, in fact the Iranians were the less appreciated of the two minnows.

The reason was plain: where as the Tunisians played an all-round game, the Iranians were concerned mainly to defend and stop their opponents at all costs- even if it should mean a pile of penalties.

Perhaps this approach was forced on manager Heshmat Mohajerani by the fact that Hasan Rowshan was not fully fit; perhaps it was forced by the withdrawal from the squad before the finals of Parviz Gheleechkhani- though his form in the NASL with San Jose Earthquakes had been nothing to write about.

Without doubt theri best game was the 1-1 draw with Scotland. Iran scored both goals too – the one , a stupid own goal conceded by Eskandarian in a mix-up with his goalkeeper on the edge of the penalty box.

Judges by Iran’s performance, all those British managers still face a mountain of work to bring the Middle East nations up to a reasonable standard.

IRAN PLAN AHEAD

The dust hadn’t settled on Iran’s first World Cup expedition when manager Heshmat Mohajerani started working on his plans for the next one.

Mohajerani had said he intended to return to club football after Argentina, but the influence of the Crown Prince may well keep him in charge of the national team.
And already Mohajerani has sketched a development programme which will take Iran through the Asian Games at the end of the year and the Moscow Olympics in 1980 to the World Cup in Spain.
Many of the older players, including the splendid captain Ali Parvin, will go. A new team will be built around the young men who gained precious experience this summer in Mendoza and Cordoba.

Mohajerani said: ‘We have learned a lot from Argentina, not all of it pleasant, but we have learned. And that is just what we said we would do.”
“Our players are amateurs and have never experienced anything like this before. They were alongside the best teams in the world, sampling the atmosphere of the big time for the first time. Now we must use the experience we have gained as we begin the four-year cycle all over again. We cannot afford to sit back for a rest. We must keep going forward, looking to improve all the time.”
To that end Mohajerani hopes to give his new team competition against top class sides before they line up in Bangkok.
“Matches against good foreign opposition are essential,’ he said, ‘There is no substitute. This is the way you keep the momentum going and keep the players in touch.”
More than half the Argentina side could be replaced as Mohajerani looks for the foundations of his side for Spain. One man who will be retained as a key figure is Hassan Roshan.
The little forward didn’t complete a match in this summer’s championship, again falling victim of knee and muscle injuries. But against Peru he gave glimpses of the skill, Instinct and finishing ability which make him a quality player.
“He has cruel luck with injuries,’ said Mohajerani. ‘But he is a very good player and over the next four years we hope he will play a big part in our plans.”
The unpleasant experiences he mentioned concerned some of the refereeing in Argentina. Iran conceded four penalties, two against Holland and two against Peru.
“We don’t want to go on complaining about referees but I do think some of those decisions were harsh and left us with heavy defeats we didn’t deserve.”

Certainly against Peru they were given little reward for their imaginative play. They had the better of the game for long spells but Roshan alone provided a genuine threat and they went down 4-1.
Finishing, indeed, was a major problem. They played with two men up and were reluctant to push men forward from midfield. That was their other chief failing — lack of confidence.
It didn’t help them to face Holland in their first match. They were clearly overawed and despite the penalties were perhaps fortunate to get away with a 3-0 defeat. Their outstanding performance was in holding Scotland to a 1-1 draw. Again they were ruled by caution in the early stages, but after giving away an own goal came back to equalise and almost snatch a remarkable victory. With more confidence and determination Iran should make an even bigger impact on the game over the next four years.

Role of Team Melli Legionnaires.

The qualification to the AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015 is not more than a mere formality for Team Melli. On Tuesday, Iran will be playing Lebanon in Beirut looking for one point to ensure the qualification. Lebanon, shocked Iran the last time they met in Beirut, although a repeat performance by the Lebanese this time is highly unlikely.

While Lebanon played two good matches against Kuwait, they fell short of achieving a win as both matches ended in goal-less draw. This will increase the pressure on them to grab all the 3 points against Team Melli. Lebanon will need a victory to stand a chance of qualification to the Asian cup ahead of Kuwait. They are full of motivation and drive while on the other hand, the scar of that heavy defeat against Iran in Azadi has not healed yet. For Team Melli , it will not be an easy match as Lebanon can be a solid team defensively, with some neat and organized and swift counter attack ability that might catch some of the slower Iranian players off guard. However, with Iran supremacy in the midfield, such threat can be mitigated if Teymourian , Jabbari and Nekounam play their normal game and control the midfield like they have done in the last few matches.

The role of the Legionnaires in the upcoming match is crucial for Team Melli.

In goal, young Daniel Davari , given his debut against Thailand, played a decent game and despite some initial hiccup , as the match progressed , he showed a lot of confidence and ability. His towering presence in the box is quite intimidating for the opposition forwards. His timing for crosses and handling of shoots, was flawless. Davari is a promising young keeper for Iran, although the communication channels between himself and the defenders needs improvement. That can be only achieved by more competitive matches where they can work on such shortcomings. Unfortunately, playing friendly matches is the Achilles heel for Team Melli and becoming a serious concern for everyone not to mention the sarcastic opportunities for comedians.

Ashkan Dejagah Iran vs.Thailand

At right back , Mehrdad Beitashour had a reasonable game. He was not troubled much by the Thai players on the flank. Although , many observers were looking forward for his ventures on the flanks and his crosses, et le Khosrow Heydari,  Beitashour fell short of expectations either due to tactical restraints imposed by Queiroz , or simply because he was cautious in his first starting match. In his few crosses, however, the San Jose Earthquake defender showed that he has class and can be a serious threat to Esteghlal’s right back Heydari. In this department, it is all good news for Queiroz.

In midfield , Ashkan Dejagah was a star. His two starting matches with Fulham in the English Premiere League previous ot this match were evident in his confidence. He teased the Thai players, dribbled past them, shot nicely and overall, he was an arm and a leg better than the same Dejagah who played against the same team in Azadi exactly a month ago.  In Azadi , Dejagah was a shadow of the tenacious skillful player whose movement and vision in a game is a delight to watch. It was only the lack of competition and playing competitive matches that reduced the readiness of Dejagah. He is back with a vengeance. And his opener goal was a classic evidence of his revival.

It has transpired that Dejagah is seriously thinking of leaving Fulham because of lack of playing time. Somehow Fulham coach,  Martin Jol has lost some of the belief he had in Dejagah. The reason for contemplating a move away from fulham , is Dejagah’s concern that Queiroz will not consider him for selection in the starting  lineup, if he remains benched in the club.

Such reasoning is logical elsewhere and is of concern to many professional players in Europe who aspire to play in the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, but it is very unlikely that Queiroz will be thinking along this line. It suffices that Dejagah is registered as a Fulham player, a team in the EPL. For the Portuguese, it is enough credential and vote of confidence for the player which puts him ahead in the picking order. In any case, Dejagah’s standard and experience is a notch above many current Team Melli players, which gives him an advantage and leverage in the selection process. His fear of not being picked up by Queiroz in unfounded and at this stage of the game. Transferring out of Fulham , is not really a very wise move. It has its own risks as well. With a new club; he needs time to gel and it is not foregone conclusion that a starting role is assured. On the other hand, Martin Jol days are probably numbered in Fulham.

Masoud Shojaei was the least impressive of the Legionnaires. The Las Palmas player had a quiet game although he was a slight improvement compared to his previous outings which has resulted in some harsh booing from the fans in Azadi. With his regular playing for his club in the Spanish Second divisions, Shojaei hopes that he regains some of his sharpness that he lost during the long layoff due to imnjury.

And what about Reza Ghoochannejd ? This player has hardly failed to deliver since his debut less than a year ago. His records of scoring is second to none. 7 goals in 9 games is a record that is envy of any professional player across the world. It is simply fantastic record for a player who is not even a fix starter for his team in the modest Belgian league.    His no nonsense approach to the game , hard work and ethics is exemplary. Given the proper service, Ghoochannejad will not disappoint, his finishing is immaculate and Team Melli is blessed with a player in his caliber.

And last but not least, the young Alireza Jahanbakhsh. This player is the talk of the town in Iran be it as sarcastic references to Queiroz’s contempt with Iran’s domestic league and his obsession with European based players , or as a true reflection of this young man potential which he displayed while playing for Team Melli youth teams. Apparently Jahanbaksh made a grand appearance of one league game , and one cup game of 22 minutes each for a bottom of the Dutch Eredivisie league club NEC to earn a call to Team Melli Squad. Yet players likes Payam Sadeghian & Alishah both young players who have truly displayed some exciting and high class football for their club, were not considered as potential team Melli players.

The talent of Jahanbaksh is not in question; it is the selection process and the bias towards any player with the slightest affiliation with Europe , that has infuriated many fans and observers in Iran. However, Team Melli’s 3rd goal against Thailand in Bangkok scored by young Jahanbakhsh coming in as a late substitute was a blessing in disguise for Querioz’s and his confidence in this player. Questions are being asked now whether the Portuguese coach has a special vision that no other person has when it comes to picking players with the least logical reasoning, ahead of more obvious selection options.

The Thailand match and the ease at which Team Melli won the game, vindicates a seal of approval for Queiroz selections. The legionnaire player were justified the confidence of the coach and won full marks with their merited display. None of them disappointed and with 3 goals out of 3 scored by the legionnaires, it was evident that their contribution was immense. They need to seal it on Tuesday against Lebanon, which is by far a much tougher opponent than the lackluster Thailand, however, the boys display against Thailand has to be admired and cherished.

Dejagah ponders Fulham exit as winger fears for Iran World Cup place.

The Daily Mail

By Sam Cunningham

Fulham’s Ashkan Dejagah fears for his World Cup place with Iran due to his lack of games for Martin Jol.

The winger has been warned by Iran manager Carlos Queiroz he needs first-team football and may seek a move in January if he does not start playing regularly for his club.

‘It’s a big year for me,’ he told the Fulham Chronicle. ‘It’s a dream to play in the World Cup and I have the chance to do that next summer, so it’s very important that I’m playing.

‘The manager tells us every time that we have to be playing for our clubs because you need games to be sharp heading into the tournament. If you’re not playing you’re scared about your World Cup chances, so hopefully I’m fit and ready.’

Asian Cup 2015 (Qs) MD4: Thailand 0-3 Iran

Bangkok: Three-time AFC Asian Cup winners Iran took a big step towards qualification for the 2015 finals in Australia with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Thailand on Friday.

The Asian powerhouses, who have already booked their passage to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, outclassed the home side at a steamy Rajamangala Stadium with goals from Ashkan Dejagah, Reza Ghoochannejhad and Alireza Jahanbakhsh

And the victory took unbeaten Iran to 10 points two games remaining in Group B, with Thailand still without a point and facing almost certain elimination.

“We go to Lebanon next week with 10 points which was our goal. I think it will be enough to qualify for the Asian Cup finals,” said Iran coach Carlos Queiroz.

“It was a good game for us tonight, especially in the first half. We were 2-0 up and had control of the game after 45 minutes.

“We slowed down a bit in the second half and played with less energy and speed. My players know there is a long trip to Lebanon.

“We came here with the right attitude, very professional. I am very happy with the attitude of my players.”

Thailand had a huge let off after just seven minutes with Iran defender Pejman Montazeri – up for a free-kick – scooping the ball into the grateful arms of Thai goalkeeper Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool from just six yards.

Iran looked by far the more potent force and Sinthaweechai did well to parry a good effort from midfielder Mojtaba Jabari in the 27th minute.

But the opener was delayed by just a minute with Fulham’s Dejagah, who had been a constant menace down the right wing, finding the target with a well-struck shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Iran continued to press and added a second in the 43rd minute with striker Ghoochannejhad taking advantage of poor defending by Thailand to lift the ball past Sinthaweechai.

Thailand battled for every ball but had no answer to the guile and pace of Iran and failed to create a single clear-cut chance in the first half.

Iran lacked the same intensity in the second half allowing the Thais to be more adventurous and substitute Datsakorn Thonglao – surprisingly left out of the starting line-up – forced goalkeeper Mohammad Davari into his first real save in the 73rd minute.

But after Thailand substitute Phawadon Suwanchart was sent-off in injury time, Iran rubbed salt into the host’s wounds with Jahanbakhsh scoring his side’s third goal.

“My players were not so fresh tonight and faced a lot of stress. Physically and tactically they were way ahead of us. We must develop and improve our tactics and technique,” said Thailand coach Surachai Jaturapattarapong.

“The next generation of players must develop these skills otherwise we will not get better.

“We will play for pride in the final two games and we will be looking to win them both.”
