Nekounam back in Osasuna after 2 years absence.

Two years ago, Javad Nekounam left Osasuna to Esteghlal Tehran after he refused to accept a substantial pay cut mandated by the Chief Executive of the club. Osasuna , which was playing in the La Liga was struggling financially and Nekounam was one of their highest paid players. Getting rid of him seemed to be a logical financial move for the club , but far from a sound decision tactically.

Today , Javad Nekounam has returned back to his old favorite place , but the Pamplona club is no more a La liga club. Last season and after a very tough run , the club was relegated , and now it is in the second division.

The Bosses of Osasuna introduced Nekounam to about 500 cheering Osasuna fans in Pamplona. Javad immediately got to work and started his first training session preparing for the imminent start of the Segunda Liga of Spain.

Before his departure from Iran, after returning from World Cup duty, Javad Nekounam created a major controversy when he embarked on a verbal war and spoke highly critically about Amir Ghalenoei , his coach in Esteghlal with his alleged faults. Nekounam did not chew his words either accusing the coach , who was also the coach of Team Melli when Nekounam was a member of the team in Asian Cup 2007 , of being ignorant about football coaching.

For the record, Amir Ghalenoei is the highest decorated Iranian coach in league history winning 4 titles with Esteghlal and Sepahan. His record with Team Melli is also one of the best officially losing one friendly match only. Not a bad achievement for a coach who ignorant about football coaching according to Nekounam.

The accusations against Ghalenoei made public by Nekounam , promoted Esteghlal club and Ghalenoei himself to seek justice and file a slander case against the Captain of Team Melli in the courts.

Meanwhile, it seems that the talks between a Greek club and Masoud Shojaei has broken down. Shojaei is a free player since he was released by Las Palmas at the end of last season and still seeking a club in Europe. It very much looks like the East for Shojaei, either back home to Iran or one of the Persian Gulf countries’ leagues.

Shojaei replaces Heydari against Argentina

The line up of Iran vs Argentina has just been announced,

The only change in Team Melli line up is Shojaei starting on the right flank instead of Heydari. Shojaei was a substitute against Nigeria,

On the other hand, Argentina is going with its full offensive force  Messi , Higuain , Aguero and Di Maria will make the 4 forward players against Team Melli

Spare a thought for Mohammad Reza Khalatbary.

The World Cup is the ultimate dream of any player in the world, more so the players from third world countries. Missing on the World Cup can be morally devastating for some especially if such a player has done enough to justify his selection in the national team that had made it to the World Cup.  When the player has contributed towards the qualification, it seems cruel to give such player the pink chit and tell him thank you but your services are not required in the World Cup.

The media in particular relishes such stories, some of them dramatic especially if it is associated with some firework in form of statements and verbal war.

Our story does not have that sort of drama, in fact it is honorably accepted by the player who has opted to keep silent and take out his sorrow in the privacy of his surroundings rather than public outcry.

In this article we want to spare a thought to Mohammad Reza Khalatbary, the Persepolis winger who was surprisingly omitted from the final list of 23 players.

A quick look at Khalatbary contribution towards the FIFA World Cup 2014 campaign paints more than a decent picture of a valuable player.  Khalatbary played a total of 13 matches (9 as a started 4 as a substitute). He scored 2 goals; the first one was a goal for the record books as it was scored in the injury time against Uzbekistan in Tashkent in the first match of the finals rounds of qualification. A true gem of a goal , a more boosting strike and a savior for Team Melli.

 khalatbar-Mohammadreza

Khalatbary value as a pacey skilful winger has been in evidence in Team Melli and his clubs numerous of times. His explosive runs on the flanks , his ability to dribble , his bravery, his assists , his crosses and finally his sheer commitment and devotion made this player a number is not easily ignored by coaches.

But Carlos Queiroz had other ideas not strictly according to the script and formbook.

So, who is the player who has taken Khalatbary’s place in the plane to Brazil? All fingers direct towards Masoud Shojaei who also operates on the right midfield and plays also as pseudo winger.

Shojaei’s contribution toward Iran’s qualification to the world cup was 5 matches and no goals. It also included one red card against South Korea in Azadi.

Khaltabry is 30 while Shojaei is a year younger, however, there is marked difference between the pace and stamina of the two players. While Khalatbary’s speed is his hallmark especially in short distances, shojaei looks lethargic in comparison and hardly been known for his pace.

Despite the better qualities and contribution of Khalatbary over Shojaei in this campaign, the Las Palmas midfielder was picked and we largely believe that it is his playing in 2nd division team in Europe plus the previous experience with Osasuna in the La Liga that has put shojaei ahead of Khalatbary in the picking order.

Whether this is justified or not  or whether players other than Shojaei have been preferred over Khalatbary is immaterial as Queiroz has his own justification and selection criteria that is, if not respected or appreciated by the fans, it should at least be accepted. What is wretched in particular about Khalatbary’s exclusion is that he might never have a chance to play in the biggest football event in the world.

Spare a though for Mohammad Reza Khalatbary , who has been fighting and giving his best anytime he has been called for duty. Perhaps he is not everyone’s cup of team, but no one can not accuse him of not trying or lack of passion for his team. The Ramsar winger that entertained the crowds for years and reached the piicle of his career when he was picked by the great Diego Maradona a to play for Al Wasl, may never have a chance to show some of his magic to the rest of the world.

 We salute Khalatbary.

António Simões defends Shojae against fans abuse.

The assistant coach of Team Melli António Simões , has defended  Masoud Shojaei against the fans who booed him and chanted against the Las Palmas player during Tuesday’s 2-1 win against Thailand.

The Portuguese coach said that he was not fully aware what was going on during the match in this respect and what the fans were chanting about during the game itself.  “ Unfortunately , one person forgot to do what he is supposed to do. We only knew about those chants on our way back to the hotel.  If Carlos Queiroz knew exactly what was going on as far as Shojeai was concerned and from what I know of Queiroz character, he would have left Shojaei in the game even if the match lasted another 4 of 5 hours !!” António Simões said in a statement to the FFIRI website.

“As a player who has served this team for 9 years, Shojeai deserves much respect and certainly better than the treatment he received on Tuesday” The assistant to Carlos Queiroz said. “Some people need to learn to be appreciative and value their assets. Shojaei belongs to the People of Iran and is part of this family called Team Mell” Simões concluded.

If António Simões is right about what he believes that Queiroz would have done and left Shojaei playing the whole match ( or even 5 hours if the match  lasted that long, as he claimed)  in defiance to the hostile fans  and subjecting him to barrages of verbal abuse and  of profanities from that section of the crowds, then Queiroz needs to learn a few lessons on human factors and psychology in the Persian culture. It might be OK in Europe  ( although we seriously doubt that )  for a player to be subjected to boos and abuse, in Iran it is simply NOT acceptable. The insults are demoralizing for a player and would leave a scar that some players might not easily fully recover from.

Shojaei in tears
Shojaei in tears

Shojaei , to be fair , has not been playing anywhere near his unusual best since the Asian Cup 2011 in Doha, despite what Queiroz thinks of the player.  Shaoje had a career threatening injury, he was off football for a season and a half. Masoud Shojaei, as a person is a decent gentleman who has hardly been in the news for wrong reasons. His disciplinary record is admirable and he is a true professional. He is also a hyper sensitive person. The world knew about how sensitive Shojaei is shortly after he was sent off during the Korea Game in Azadi for Iran to play with 10 men. Masoud was in tears, inconsolable and crying like a baby . It was like a miracle when Nekounam scored the decisive goal , not only to save Iran but also to console Shojaei , who would have never  forgiven himself if Iran lost that match due to his dismissal.

We completely concur with António Simões last statements about respect and appreciations for the efforts of players, despite the fact that some of these efforts sometimes fall way short of the fans expectations. We also disagree with the fans focusing on Shaojae while many other players were playing worse than him. But because those under-performing players were from famous teams, they were immune! However, we disagree with the hawkish, defiant and stubborn mentality that the Team Melli coaching team seems to employ. There is no question that Queiroz has the last say about his players’ selection, but we firmly believe that in parallel he needs to starts thinking about protecting his players, morally and physically as well.
