Torrid decline of U23 team no thanks to incompetent FFIRI selections.

FFIRI has an incredible knack for rewarding failures. It is something that Mehdi Taj and his predecessor Ali Kaffashian has exceled in and the Iranian football community are getting used to.  Both of these men, who have been leading the Iranian federation since 2008 , have a serious lack of picking winners while selecting staff to work for them be it on the playing fields as coaches or in the corridors of power as administrators. In Iran’s football federation, administrators and coaches do not last long, because they fail to succeed due to the pathetic selection process.

Amir Hossein Peyrovani is a classic example of FFIRI appalling policy of Mehdi Taj and his failure to pick and appoint the right person for the job. After taking Team Melli U20 to the FIFA U20 championship, the mediocre coach, who struggled to find a coaching job even at lower divisions clubs in Iran, failed miserably in dealing with the world’s top age group teams.

Iran’s U20 team was in fact one of the most promising and talented age group team of the last couple of decades. There was abundance of talents, however, tactical naivety, lack of pedigree in coaching and failure to read the game have all combined to knock Iran out of championship in the group stages. Iran U20 ended up as the bottom team of the group. The irony of this championship is that Iran U20 was scored first in all the matches and was 2 goals up against Zambia before losing 2-4.

Not convinced with the fact that FIFA U20 performance and result was a failure, Peyrovani was once again coaching but now at a higher level. Acute lack of appraisal and performance analysis system in the Iranian federation, living in denials and the relegating FFIRI’s technical committee (no thanks to Carlos Queiroz), has allowed Mehdi Taj to act and repeat the same error. In his questionable wisdom the head of the FFIRI chose Peyrovani to take the helm of the U23 team to the AFC qualifiers. Apart from a few sporadic mumbles, this appointment was surprisingly accepted by all stakeholders and the media. No one dared or bothered to question this appointment for such an important age group team, the de facto backbone of Team Melli!

Not surprising at all, that Peyrovani failed again at a much lower level of competition. Not in the FIFA U20 final but at a group qualifiers against the likes of Sri Lanka, Kyrgyzstan and Oman. Sri Lanka withdrew and so the group consisted of 3 teams only.  Iran’s first match against the host ended in a very difficult narrow 2-1 win but the Omani’s managed to easily defeat Iran 2-0 to shatter the dream of yet another significantly talented Iranian team. A team victimized by the acute deficiency and incompetence of Iranian football management.

It is still an enigma why Iran cannot produce quality football administrators, managers and coaches as good as they produce players. Apart from one Iranian in Kambiz Atabay back in the mid 70’s  , who headed the Asian Football Confederation , Iran has not managed to produce a competent administrator worthy of consideration for top administration jobs in AFC or FIFA. Tiny countries such as Bahrain, Sri Lanka , and Singapore had more officials in the AFC than mighty Iran.

Worst still , is the record of Iranian coaches in Asia. Even the best of Iran’s national coaches have failed to pass the group stages of AFC Champions league or at best the quarter finals of Asian Cup , in the post revolutions era.

The legendary Heshmat Mohajerani is the last of the Iranian great coaches. It seems that the wait is much longer for a quality coach to appear in Iran.

The other sad news is the remarkable decline of Iran U23 teams. From winners of the Asian Games coached by Branko Ivankovic , to struggling to make the finals stages.

 Winners and losers

Team Melli upcoming friendly internationals.

With so much rumors and uncertainties around Carlos Queiroz , Team Melli might very well be facing Croatia and FYR Macedonia without a permanent coach.

Team Melli is scheduled to play the Croatian national team in its first international football match ever in the northern city of Koprivnica in May.

The friendly international at the end of May is part of the build up for the host to Euro 2016 in France.  While Team Melli would be using this match for its own build up for the third round of FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifiers. The match will be the first to be hosted in the city and Koprivnica.

Croatia and Iran have met twice before in friendlies. Croatia won 2-0 just before France ’98 in Rijeka and the two sides played out a 2-2 draw in Osijek in a warm-up before the World Cup in 2006 in Germany.

Team Melli is scheduled to meet Macedonia in Skopje on 4th June after the Croatia match.

With the recent outburst of  Carlos Queiroz and his contempt against the Secretary General of the FFIRI, the Portuguese coach has clearly paved the way for his exit from Team Melli. Queiroz has become a divisive figure in Iranian football. There are those who strongly support him , and that would normally be the fans who do not have any voting power, and those who do not stand him for his brash and abrasive style. The latter category would be the ones with power and close to decision makers.

As of now, it is question of waiting time.

The World Cup is here and Team Melli is set to go

After all the clamors, the excitement, the thrills and the expectation where the world media was virtually littered with stories about the World Cup. The day of the reckoning is here and now.

Stories from the downright silly and ridiculous like the one about the turtle that predicts the World Cup winner ( it can’t get more sillier than that , can it ?) to the more serious side of the World Cup where a plethora of football experts have made life easy for you by predicting the winning teams, before a ball has even been kicked! Mixed with real life stories of calamities, unfinished work on Stadia , violence, robberies, industrial disputes and incredible traffic jams in major cities of the host nation.

This should have been a red card.

In the opener the 20th FIFA World Cup 2014, Brazil defeated Croatia 3-1 after the East Europeans stunned the host with a goal. In fact it was a friendly own goal by the recent European Cup winner defender of Real Madrid,  Marcelo. However , young  Neymar stole the show as Brazil came from behind to score two goals, one a of which was a controversial penalty. The Croats are still devastated and feel grieved because Neymar should have been sent off for elbowing Modric in the first half.

A controversial start, no doubt we have not seen the end of those.

Team Melli will be there amongst the elite. We will be hearing and seeing Hajsafy mingle with Di Maria,  about Dejagah tackling Messi , while Hosseini will be stopping Aguero from scoring and Ghoochannehad passing Zabaleta on his way. Names that increases the adrenaline on hearing them , oppositions at the highest level of football,  a far cry from hearing the names of Guinea or Thailand or  Belarus or Angola that Team Melli has been sparring with in their way to the Word Cup. This is the real thing, people.  The match in 4 days against Nigeria will be the decider, according to Queiroz. No time for losers.

Ashkan Dejagah

From the pulse of the Team Melli fans, we see that the majority will not be satisfied with anything less than qualification to the next round. While that is genuinely a legitimate wish and within the full right of the aspiring fans, it is perhaps a bit of unrealistic expectation considering the less-than-optimum preparations and acute lack of high level friendly games by Team Melli.

All this is water under the bridge now. The reality is that Team Melli will be facing Nigeria and it is well within the capability of the boys to beat them. Then they have to face one of the title contenders in Argentina. A totally different proposition, a quality at the highest level and in Messi , they have the greatest football player on earth. HosseinKazerani , the solid defender of Pas and a member of Team Melli 1978 World Cup team, speaking recently on a TV show about memories of 1978 World Cup,  countered  the fear of some his teammate playing against the might of Holland with  household name players, Kazerani said in a simple term “Their players have one head two legs and two hands, same as we do, what are you frighten of ?”. Simplistic logic it might be, but no denying that it is very much a true statement. It is about who dares win and who is hungrier for glory. About the stronger mentality and better motivation.

Let us hope Team Melli plays with the passion and pride that they are famous for. Let us hope that the skills of the players yields the optimum result and finally , let us hope that Team Melli impresses the fans across the globe with a display of valor , sportsmanship and skills worthy of the name of Iran.
