Seyed Mohamad Alavi emerged from the football-rich province of Khuzestan, developing his skills with the youth team of Foolad. His talent and dedication quickly set him apart as a promising defender in Iranian football.
Alavi burst onto the national scene with a memorable performance during Olympic qualifying matches. His defining moment came with a powerful header against China at Azadi Stadium, securing three crucial points for Iran and revitalizing the team's qualification hopes.
Although initially selected for the U23 squad by coach Mayeli-Kohan, Alavi saw limited playing time. It was only after Hossein Faraki took over as coach that Alavi's potential was fully recognized and utilized in all remaining matches.
Under Faraki's guidance, Alavi delivered consistently strong performances beyond his crucial goal. Unfortunately, his contributions came slightly too late as Iran ultimately fell short of displacing South Korea for qualification to the Athens Olympics.
Alavi's club performances with Foolad were equally impressive. He established himself as a pivotal player in the team's defensive line, with his consistency and solid defending contributing significantly to the club's successes during his tenure.
After establishing himself at Foolad, Alavi transferred to Pas and later had a brief stint with Persepolis before ultimately returning to Pas Hamedan to continue his professional career.
