Taj Club hosted the famous star-studded Santos in Tehran. Lt. Gen. Khosravani, president of the Taj Club, is said to have paid $ 30,00 for Santos with a strict condition of the presence of  90-minute of Pele in the field. But the ill fortune of Taj was that their top players such as Nasser Hejazi, Ali Jabbari, Akbar Karaghram, Karo Haghverdian, Gholam Hossein Mazlomi and Javad Ghorab were all out of country. They were in Peyuong Yang with Team Melli playing against North Korea as part of the Olympic Games qualification round. That match ended goalless. After the Korea match Team Melli had to travel to Bangkok to take part in the Asian Championships 1972 in Thailand.

As the circumstances dictated , Taj had to rethink the composition of the team that faced Santos , Players from Pas were invited. the only club that refused to provide players was Persepolis!

The afternoon of May 5th, 1972. Tickets of 50, 100, 200 and 300 Rials. were totally sold out.  In that Friday afternoon sixty thousand spectators filled the Aryamehr stadium which has been open only a few months back, all eager to watch the “Black Pearl, Pele. The crown prince Reza Pahlavi was in the VIP enclosure to cheer Iran. The match started with half an hour delay. The Yuogslav coach of Taj was coaching the team and he seemed to be restless from the onset.

Referee Abdolreza Mozoun blew his whistle and the crowd cheered loudly.
It took 21 minute for Santos to take the lead, and the goal was scored by none other than the great Pele.  But Parviz Mirza Hasan scored the equalizer eight minutes later to the delight of the crowd.

The first half ended 1-1

The half time was unusually extended to 30 minutes instead of the regulation time of 15 minutes!

In the second half, a disallowed goal by Santos was met with strong protest by Santos (protest by Pele contained references to the referee as being unfair ).  Raikov substitutions in the final fifteen minutes, proved to be a game changer and disastrous to Iran “B” team.  . Masoud Mozhdehi, Ali Rahmani and Ahmad Mansishzadeh, Mirza Hasan, Babakhanlu and Adibi (Raikov admitted later that his substitutions were wrong). The match was a 1-1 Draws with eight minutes left to the end. The joy of the crowd was excessive do was the optimism. THen it was like a storm has hit Iran’s team.

Four goals in the last eight minutes by Santos. includes another two from the star of the Match, Pele to complete his hat-trick. A 5-1 Win  for Brazilians. When the final whistle was blown, the fans booed their own team and cheered the Brazilians.

Santos’s coach was wondering how come the host conceded 4 goals in 8 minutes. In response, he was told that the main  team is not present  in which he replies Why did your team get five goals?” And in response he said “Do you have only one team?”
