Iran announces 12 man Beach Soccer Squad.

Iran has announced the squad for th upcoming FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Tahiti.

IRAN are set to grace the world stage once again when the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Tahiti 2013 gets underway this September. Having failed to make it to the quarter-final stage at their last four appearances at the tournament, the Iranians are looking to a new clutch of stars to put the past behind them.

Top of the list is striker Moslem Mesigar, a cornerstone of the team’s plans, who will be playing in his fourth FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. Speaking to FIFA.com, the sharp-shooting Mesigar opened up about his dreams for Tahiti and looked back at some of the highlights of his beach soccer career.

Image change
With three competition appearances behind him, Mesigar believes the time has come to change the reputation his national side have earned in their previous four campaigns: “We’ve competed at the World Cup on four previous occasions and never made it to the quarter-finals. Our stumbling block has always been the first round. We have a lot to learn in this game but I reckon the time has arrived for us to make the experience we’ve accumulated count.”

“We are looking forward to taking part in Tahiti 2013,” he went on, “and we’re eager to set new benchmarks. Qualifying is our first target and if we manage that then there’s nothing to stop us thinking of going even further. Reaching the quarter-finals is a big deal and that is what we hope to do.”

Iran have played a total of 12 matches in their previous FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup campaigns, losing 11 of them. It was at Rio de Janeiro 2007, their second tournament appearance, that they managed their only win to date, beating Spain 5-4, before their winning ways deserted them once again.

Their most recent outing at Ravenna 2011 saw the Iranians put in their finest performance to date. Their tally of three first round defeats does not to justice to the quality of their play in a group that comprised Italy, Switzerland and Senegal. There were clear signs that the Iranian beach soccer team was finally making progress.

Mesigar certainly sees a pattern: “Looking at how far we’ve come, from our first tournament to our most recent campaign, we’ve improved our performances. We have played great games, taking on strong teams and making it hard for them. If we step up our preparations a little, I believe we can close the gap, though nothing’s certain in football.”

The hard yards
To get themselves up to the standard required for a tournament of this magnitude, Iran have been working flat out since they booked their tickets for Tahiti. Central to their plans is an intensive training program, as Mesigar explains: “When the Asian qualifiers finished at the beginning of the year, we drew up plans to develop our technical skills. Our Brazilian coach Marco Octavio has brought some new ideas with him, plus the latest tactics, and we will continue working hard to gain the attributes we need.”

Things have not been so easy in the past. “One of the reasons for our failure to win at past tournaments is changes to the coaching staff,” Mesigar said, “as well as a lack of adequate preparation for such a major event. We did not play friendly internationals against the big teams. Things have improved a lot. We are set to play suitably competitive warm-up games, which will definitely raise our standards. Our aim is to progress and in this game you need everything to be in place to ensure you give a good account of yourself.”

Hopes and dreams
Moslem Mesigar began his footballing career at Iranian club Shahin Bushehr before a chance encounter led him to take up beach soccer, playing for local side Daryanavardan. A move to Vision Tehran brought the youngster his first taste of success, with two league titles, three runners-up medals and the personal accolade of the season’s top goalscorer on two occasions.

His form soon brought him to the attention of the national team and he played in his first FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in 2007, retaining his place for Marseille 2008 and Ravenna 2011. As Tahiti looms on the horizon, Mesigar still has fire in his belly: “Looking back on my journey with the national side gives me the hunger to put my technical and physical skills to the test at a World Cup. I want to prove my ability alongside my teammates and show the world how much we want to make it to the later stages. We want to show them that Iranian football can evolve.”

“We got off to a great start this year,” the 28-year-old continued. “We put on some fine performances at the Asian Beach Soccer Cup in Qatar and beat Japan to take the title. It was a wonderful achievement. In that final I managed to bring the scores level in the dying second then I was the last one to hit the net during the penalty shoot-out. I also made it to the list of top goalscorers with 11 strikes. That was just terrific. I felt amazing and my morale is sky-high going into the biggest tournament of all.”

The Iranians begin their Tahiti 2013 campaign in Group C alongside Brazil, Ukraine and Senegal. Mesigar has no illusions about the size of the task ahead: “It’s a strong group and a tough one for sure. Brazil are the complete team and have been crowned world champions several times. But we will try to compete hard in all three games and make it through to the quarter-finals. We will fight with all we’ve got.”

Mesigar’s record with the national team is a good one. After taking third place at three previous editions of the Asian Beach Soccer Cup, he can now place this year’s champion’s medal alongside one from a WAFF Beach Soccer Championship and an Asian Games gold on his mantelpiece. In addition, he has twice finished top goalscorer in Asian beach soccer.

But the trophies and acclaim have not dimmed his ambition: “There is still so much to achieve. My great dream is to turn pro for one of the top European clubs. I will do everything in my power to prove that I deserve that chance and that an Iranian player like me has what it takes to play abroad.”

Carlos Queiroz has already earned his place in the history books as the first Portuguese coach to have secured consecutive FIFA World Cup™ qualifications. At South Africa 2010 he led Portugal to the Round of 16, and it is now time for Iran to return to the biggest stage in world football.

Brazil 2014 is just around the corner and the fact that Team Melli are taking part may be just what Iranian football needs to progress to another level. In Asian qualifying Iran won Group A, surpassing favourites Korea Republic in the final match and consigning Uzbekistan to the play-offs.

Despite coming in for criticism over the course of the campaign, Iran are now set to play a fourth FIFA World Cup in their history. “It was the result of two years’ work. The team kept itself united, with fantastic spirit and enormous conviction that we had to give our best at each game,” Queiroz told FIFA.com.

“With a little bit of luck, which is always needed, we got the points we required,” Queiroz said. “It’s a fantastic achievement, and we even edged first place ahead of Korea. There was no doubt about qualification, it was definite. I’m very satisfied.”

What we want from Brazil 2014 is for us to be significantly better than we are today.

Iran coach Carlos Queiroz

The coach managed to shield the group from external pressures and pass on praise to the players: “The most important thing was the group that I’ve had over these two years,” Queiroz said. “We all stayed united, from the President of the Federation to the players, both on and off the bench.

“That was key to success and we never worried about the small things. We ignored the critics because we were committed to our path. The players were fantastic, both technically and mentally.”

Despite this, Queiroz does not hide the fact that he had to impose certain important rules, always with the belief that the team is above the individual: “It wasn’t easy because we needed to take some less popular decisions, but the message was clear: no one is above the interests of the team,” he said.

“That’s why we had to pick players with courage and the right attitude. I wanted players who would serve the team, not be served by the team. That’s how we created a squad with great self-esteem. And, of course, we’ve made millions of Iranians happy.”

Growing with the best
So what are Team Melli’s objectives for the FIFA World Cup? “Realistically, can Iran win the tournament? Clearly no one believes that,” said Queiroz. “We are far from a goal of that magnitude, as Iranian football still isn’t close to the great powerhouses of Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Germany, England or Italy. We have to accept that,” the former Real Madrid coach said. “We have to make a worthy, creditable contribution, one that will honour and make all the supporters in Iran proud. How are we going to do that? With a wide-ranging, intensive preparation, as without that we won’t be able to compete against the big teams,” he said.

“Providing, after the World Cup, Iran has taken a step forward in the quality of its football, that will constitute a successful tournament. The tournament has to lead to Iran having better pitches, better turf, a better league, better coaches and more attractive football. What we want from Brazil 2014 is for us to be significantly better than we are today,” said Queiroz.

“In a nutshell, our aim is to take an enormous leap forward, put ourselves on the same rung as Japan and Korea and take our place, definitively, among the top three Asian sides,” he said.

Maracana Atmosphere
Queiroz has already been to the new Maracana stadium, where he watched the FIFA Confederations Cup Final live. “I went to Brazil to take the pulse of the World Cup,” he said. “The environment is going to be very serious, really demanding and there’s no room for playing around or being amateurs.

“I also went to see what the training facilities are like and start to make decisions so that when we arrive, we have a good hotel and a good training centre. That was the objective of my visit.”

The Portuguese coach was happy to describe how he felt watching the FIFA Confederations Cup Final between Brazil and Spain – a small taster of what the 32 sides are going to face: “The atmosphere at the Confederations Cup final was fantastic.

“You could already feel and smell what the next World Cup is going to be like. The Maracana showed what it’s going to be like. Brazil were fair winners and Spain were not on top form,” he concluded.

Majeed Jalali “They are killing our football”

Tabriz

The head coach of Tractorsazi football club of Tabriz had very harsh words for teams that are killing football and the spirit of sportsmanship according to him. Majeed Jalali , one of the most highly respected and qualified Iranian coaches was fuming in the aftermath of his team’s goalless draw against Mess Kerman. In the post-match press conference, Jalali referred to the dozens of time when Mes Kerman players dropped themselves on the pitch faking injury to waste time.

Expressing his anger and disappointment , Jalali said “The Mes Kerman players simply dropped on the ground when we had the ball possession , and expected us  to kick the ball out of bound  so that they are attended to.  After a few times of this repetitive acts, we discovered that we have been fooled and we were suckers for falling to these dirty tricks. These people are killing football. I admit that we have not mastered the proper tactics in playing against such Anti-Football teams.”

On the same subject, Jalali was interviewed today by Mehrnews  football  reporter seeking further clarification on his views which is becoming a hot subject in Iran’s football.  Jalali reiterated his stand and said “The problem is that this anti-football and un-sportsmanship behavior at club level has slowly crept up into Team Melli as well. We criticize Bahrain for grass-rolling and time wasting, but when our beloved teams do it , we tend to accept it. When we played Korea, it was apparent that our players were time wasting. This has happened in previous matches as well at international level. It is natural that players carry the habits of club football up into the national teams.”

Notorious Mes Kerman time wasting.
Notorious Mes Kerman time wasting.

“In Iran , they expect  my players to kick the ball out of bound , any time an opposing players drops himself to the ground. They call this sportsmanship behavior (Javanmardi) while in fact ,  most of the time, it is cheating and time wasting. This is becoming very common in Iran, it is encouraged by some coaches, in fact they have developed many tactics to fool the referees and master falling on the ground, especially their forwards to win penalties. It is regrettable and deplorable”

“This Mes Kerman team has mastered anti-football and time wasting tactics. I would never blame Ali Daei and Perspolis players for continuing playing and scoring when one of the Mes Kerman players dropped on the pitch, faking injury nonetheless, when Perspolis had the ball and had a good opportunity to score. I don’t believe that the Football league commission has done enough, if any, to confront the cheaters in our football, and they have also neglected to appreciate the true sportsmanship behavior, which is rare anyway. The League commission should review the matches and encourage true sportsmanship behavior while strongly deal with cheats. “

The controversial subject of so-called sportsmanship behavior has become a hot item of debate , especially after the Perpolis-Mes Kerman match that Majeed Jalali has referred to.  There is undeniable fact , that in the Persian Football league matches, time wasting and faking has become common. There are continuous breaks in action anytime a player falls in the ground. Referees always allow players to be attended on the pitch regardless to the nature of the incident.  FIFA football rules requires the player to be treated outside, except for serious injuries. Only a few have dared to talk about it in Iran football. Ali Daei and Majeed Jalai are the exceptions. The former has already warned the opposing team that his players are under instruction not to stop the game for anyone who drops on the pitch.

“We can’t afford paying Brazil US$ 2 million for a match.” MohammadNabi.

Tehran

Following much criticisms towards the Iranian football federation’s failure to effectively prepare Team Melli and use the FIFA day for friendly matches, Mohammad Nabi , the Secretary General of Football Federation , announced that a training camp will be held  for Team Melli from 6th to 10th of September in Lisbon , Portugal.

The camp will include two friendly matches, and as usual, it is not known which teams Iran will be facing in those matches.

MohammadNabi was speaking on Friday’s sport show on the Iranian TV and took this opportunity to appeal to the new government for funds, not for the federation itself but to support Team Melli’s program, as he claimed.

Faced with the customary question about the failure of the federation to utilize the FIFA day in arranging quality friendly matches, the Secretary General complained about the lack of funds and programming conflicts . He was then asked by the TV show presenter, “what was Queiroz reaction to this cancelation?” , MohammadNabi said that he was unaware about the reaction of the Portuguese coach, but stressed the point that the Federation has many tasks to cater for beside Team Melli and that includes the professional leagues, Youth level competitions and many other activities and expenses. “If we have any aspiration to be amongst the best in Asia , we require the budgets of the top federations of the continent. South Korea , for example,  who were second in our group has a budget of US$ 260 to US$ 270 million, while Japan football association budget is US$300 Million. We, on the other hand, have a problem funding a short training camp for our national team.”

MohammadNabi said “In some countries a quarter of the Federations budget is allocated to their national teams, in our case we have to do with a $2.44 Million budget  for Team Melli against a country with US$300 million football budget. Although we had lots of financial problems, we have succeeded in many of our programs and plans. We have met with government officials last week to seek their backing and we are hopeful for a positive response.”

“Brazil requested US$ 2 million for a match in Azadi. Wes simply cannot afford such a fee , which is by the way , the going current rate for top class teams.  We all aspire to play strong and famous teams, but we are not prepared to spend a quarter of our annual budget for a single match.”

MohammadNabi like all the other Football Federation administrators failed to mention if there are any plans to generate revenues from their activities or engage in marketing or sponsorship deals, favoring the easy mean of government and public funds handouts.

According to TeamMelli.com studies, the football federations of Asian countries have the following budgets. All figures are approximate in US Dollars.

Japan =    $264 million
China =    $180 million
Indonesia= $112.5 million
Korea Rep. = $95 million
Australia = $60 million
Vietnam =   $60 million
Thailand =  $52 million
Malaysia =  $35 million
Singapore = $9.7 million
Iran =      $8.0 million

“Khalatbary is 70% a Perspolis player ” Rouyanian claims.

Mohammad Rouyanian , the CEO of Perspolis and the ever controversial  character known for his contentious  claims and statements, has come up with more of the same on the subject of Khalatbary.

The Team Melli forward player has been a subject of debate since he transferred from Sepahan to Ajman club in the UAE League. The re-naming of the UAE professional league created much antagonism and anger in Iran as the authorities discouraged any Iranian playing in a league under such false name labeled in defiance to the world community.

Khalatbary’s precipitously found himself in a dilemma.

Perspolis immediately took this opportunity and showed interest in the services of the player. A reported one million dollar penalty clause was included in the contract with Ajman, and hence Perspolis requested the football federation for their financial backing to pay the penalty fee and bring back the ex-Sepahan and Zob A

han player back to Iran. The Federation flatly refused Perspolis’ request and declared that they are not in the business of supplying funds for clubs to buy players.

Rouyanian said that Khalatbary is currently in Iran after a slight injury prevented him joining the Ajman training camp in Turkey. “There was supposed to be a meeting between our representative and Ajman club last night, however our representative was late to the meeting by more than one hour because of the heavy traffic and the meeting was cancelled !!. We will try to arrange another meeting this Saturday. Another problem has developed in this respect as my request for a visa to UAE was denied. I think there are people working behind the scene to deny me a visa (…) ” declared the belligerent Rouyanian.

 “I heard a lot of rumors about the source of money that allowed Perspolis to open negotiations with Ajman Club. Some have claimed that I am providing 5 billion toman  (US$ 407,000) from my own pocket to Perspolis to buy the player. Where do I have such money from? If I had that sort of money, what would I be doing in Perspolis? A kind person has offered us this money to help the club, it is none of your business who that person is !!!” Rouyanian expressed his disgust and continued “They take every opportunity to bad-mouth me while our rivals Sepahan and Esteghlal do not wish us get this player”.

“Right now, Khalatbary is 70% a Perspolis player” declared the defiant Perspolis CEO. However, he declined to explain or go into details on how this figure of 70% was derived.

 On the subject on another ex-Team Melli player, Rouyanian said that “He liked Ali Karimi quite a lot. He was one of the players that I always liked even before I was involved in football. However, I don’t find him of much use for our team. Karimi , a player who has always professed his love and affection for the club, should have also tolerated some of the difficulties faced.”

Ali Karimi unceremoniously declared his retirement from football right after his club Perspolis was defeated in a penalty shoot-out against Sepahan in the final of Hazfi cup last season.  A few weeks later, Karmi changed his mind and admitted that he acted in haste. Perspolis management and particularly Rouyanian, who had personal clashes with Karimi beforehand, were not amused by such act and refused to include him in the team roster after his change of mind. The appointment of Ali Daei as the coach, did not help Karimi’s case either.

Iranian Parliament: candidate for Minister of Sport disapproved.

Masoud Soltanifar , the candidate for the Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs in President Rouhani’s cabinet, failed to get the approval of the parliament.

Every Ministerial appointment in the cabinet must be approved by the Iranian parliament before assuming the office. The ministers are nominated by the President who is elected by public voting. There is no prime minister position in Iran so all government functions is carried out by the president of the country.

Football administrators, clubs and the federation had a lot of expectation from Soltanifar to help and support their activity with more budget allocation from the government,  however, Soltanifar did not get the approval of the MP’s as he gained 117 positive votes with 148 votes against his appointment. 48 MP’s abstained.

This news could be critical for Team Melli’s preparation for the World Cup next year. Already strapped out of cash, the FFIRI has cancelled the scheduled camp in Portugal and two friendly matches. Other Asian teams like Japan and South Korea used the FIFA day effectively and played friendly matches, while Team Melli was idle.

Almost all the major clubs in Iran are dependent on the financial support of the government, while many of them are directly run and owned by the state like Esteghlal and Perspolis

There is no indication who is the next in line for the candidacy of Minister of Sport after Soltanifar’s disapproval.
