Nekounam pours his wrath on FFIRI.

Javad Nekounam was interviewed by telephone on Navad Program Monday night. The poor communication line, spoiled what was supposed to be constructive exchange between himself ,  the incumbent head of FFIRI, Ali Kaffashian and the show anchor Adel Ferdowsipour.

Kaffashian was the studio guest of Navad.

Javad Nekounam stopped short of accusing Ali Kaffashian of negligence when he talked extensively about the lack of  proper support for Team Melli during its quest to qualify for the world cup. “I am not singling out Mr. Kaffashian who has tried to help the team, but at best his efforts were way short of what has to be done for the most important team in Iran that is trying to qualify for the World’s biggest sporting event. Support for Team Melli is a collective effort which has not met our aspirations.”

“All what the Team Melli players have said about that were true (…)  no one has fabricated any lies .” Nekounam alleged.

“Lack of funds meant that we had to do with sub-standard kits that were actually made in Iran. I agree with Ashkan Dejagah on that. Iran’s football league standard is of a low quality of which 20% of that weakness is due the poor quality of the balls manufactured in Iran. The kit we were using was not of a good quality and everyone was dissatisfied with it.”

nekounam AFC Award 2013

Team Melli kit manufacturers UHLsports has strongly challenged what it calls allegation of substandard quality , although the German sports good company admitted that some fake UHLSports kits was found in Team Melli’s kit collections  when an audit was conducted.  Those fake ones were not sent or approved by UHLSports nor did it have any control over it.

Nekounam criticized the FFIRI again by accusing the federation of inattentiveness and disregard for Team Melli players. “After the win against Chile, we expected some rewards, but we did not even get a phone call to congratulate us let alone a bonus.!” The Osasuna Captain said.

Nekounam had no complimentary words for the Iran’s football. He accused un-named parties of building hurdles against Queiroz and working to ousted him. He also emphasized that he and the rest of the Team Melli players are quite satisfied with Queiroz and braved Kaffashian to keep him by using his own judgment rather than succumbing to external pressure.

Nekounam was evidently referring to the pressure by the Ministry of Youth and Sports but did not have the nerve to name them. Kaffashian admitted that he did not contact the Team Melli players but offered no apology or proper justification.

Nekounam admitted that his decision to quit Team Melli was abrupt and without much thought, however, he insisted that he has played his last game with the team.

NekounamJNekounamJ

Nekounam has some valid arguments, although none of it is new. However, like the plethora of critics, the record holder of matches in Team Melli is not offering practical solutions nor indicating that he is willing to work on some good deeds to help take Iran’s football out of this hardship, at least within his capabilities.

Nekounam also ignored a very important issue and that is the role of the Iranian players themselves in this chaotic status. Players who are paid professional wages but hey are amateurs in every sense of the word, and that includes Team Melli players.

While the country’s economy and many sectors of society was suffering under sanctions, many footballers were enjoying a luxury life with wages several folds higher than other professional such as surgeons , doctors , university lectures etc.

Indiscipline, apathy, lack of commitment, disrespect for peers and egotism are quite rife amongst the footballers. Areas that have not been seriously addressed by any football management schemes, although it is common knowledge.

Branko Ivankovic appointed as Persepolis head coach

The former Team Melli coach Branko Ivankovic has been appointed as the Head Coach of Persepolis club following the resignation of Hamid Derakhshan.

The Croat who coached Team Melli in two different terms has been sought by the club for some times now however the worsening results of the team under Derekhshan and the appointment of a new CEO , albeit in acting capacity , expedited the negotiations until Derkhshan was forced out by default.

The beleaguered Persepolis coach has announced his resignation following the match in which his team drew 2-2 with bottom of the table club Rah Ahan , prompting the fans in Azadi to chant against him and demanded his ousted.  Hamid Derekhshan was appointed as head coach of Persepolis on 10th September 2014 following the sacking of Ali Daei.

Ivankovic will be starting his job with immediate effect. The 61 years old Croat whose last match as coach of Team Melli was against Angola in the FIFA World Cup 2006 will have an immense task taking Persepolis out of the current turmoil. Despite the good showing in the AFC Champions League, Persepolis has been struggling in the league lying 10th in the table and dangerously getting close to the relegation zone.

Ivankovic has to deal with unstable management with ever changing personnel,  club instability , undisciplined squad  and acute funds shortage. His unenviable task will start with the AFC Champions League match in which Persepolis has a good chance in qualifying for the next round but a long shot to win the title.

Kaffashian “I have seen no positive signs from Queiroz on staying.”

Ali Kaffashian , the President of FFIRI has denied any knowledge of Queiroz’s change of mind and decision reversal.

“In my correspondences with him through the email , I have not detected anything positive about him deciding to stay. Queiroz is adamant that he wants to leave Team Melli.”   Kaffashian said, according to Mehr News.

Ali Kaffashian expressed his surprise by what Queiroz has allegedly said quoting him (Kaffashian) as saying that Iran will not qualify for FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia!

“I would never say such a thing. I have been misquoted. I have told Queiroz that during our long road to qualification , on occasions we might face difficulties providing proper training facilities or having financial problems , but in all cases we will try our utmost to provide and facilitate everything. Maybe he took these words by mistake and thought I said what I have NOT said.”

Makani is pardoned: Debility of Iran’s football.

Why is Carlos Queiroz so popular amongst the Iranian fans?

For many reasons, but one of them is that Queiroz is fundamentally a professional coach , brought up in a professional environment and applies the highest standards in his work of which conduct and discipline is top priority.

In a professional environment, disgruntled or disobedient players like Rahmati and Aghili have no place in Team Melli, regardless to how good they actually are. They have to pay the price for their indiscretions.

Only two days after Sousha Makani was sacked by Persepolis coach Hamid Derakhshan and his dismissal was confirmed later by team Manager Mahmoud Khordbin , a bunch of flowers and a kiss on the forehead ended all the commotion and everything is back to normal. Sousha Makani is pardoned by Derakhshan!!

Sousha Makani’s harsh words for his coach in front of his teammates subsequently followed by his refusal to sit on the bench and departure from the squad , lead to some unsavory scenes and a coach who was  angry and humiliated.  Derakhshan on his part announced in a news conference that Makani has no place in the team as long as he is the coach of Persepolis.

The reinstatement of Makani typifies how feeble this coach is and how Persepolis is suffering from lack of strong leadership. This act of fragility and instability by Derekhshan , whose days are numbered as Persepolis coach anyway, does not concern Persepolis team alone, but extends to Iran’s football image. It also concerns team Melli as Makani is was in the last squad.

Persepolis is a proud team with a legacy. It has been suffering from acute players’ indiscipline and even revolt against a weak management and coach. Derakhshan’s main interest was the title of Persepolis head coach. Neither his achievements nor his resume merits his appointment as the coach of the most popular team in Asia. However, it is the results and the behavior of the players such as Makani , Sadeghian  and the rest that typifies the weakness of this man and reflects negatively on all Iranian national coaches. Being a coach of Persepolis, will inadvertently puts the person in the news and limelight in Iran.

Despite Derakhshan’s act of benevolence, Persepolis Disciplinary Committee has yet to rule on Makani.

Even if Queiroz did not lift any trophies for Iran, he has shown the way and succeeded in managing a team to the highest standards possible despite lack of resources.  Will the Iranian coaches learn from him or at least follow his professionalism and high regard for discipline?

Derakhshan is certainly not a good learner.

Omid Team Manager apologizes for the loss.

Habib Kashani offered his apologies for the loss that Team Melli suffered against Saudi Arabia in Azadi stadium in the penultimate match of the AFC U23 Championship qualifiers. The 2-1 loss against Saudi Arabia resulted in the qualification of the opponents to the finals of the competition while Iran also qualified as one of the 5 best groups runners up.

Kashani , however , wasted little time in providing the usual bundle of excuses and justification for the loss. He said the team had only 3 months to prepare while Vingada’s team had 8 months yet lost to Vietnam and drew with Kyrgyzstan in the Asian Games in Incheon 2014.

“Half of the players were only recently added to the team and as such we needed more time to prepare. The defeat against Saudi Arabia was an unfortunate event which the coaching staff should offer a justification for.”

Iran U23 vs Saudi U23 Ali Karimi

Kashani added that in order to prepare for the final tournament in Qatar , the U23 team needs the cooperation of the league commission and their consent to the Omid Team training schedules and programs. “ As it is now, we only have the FIFA day where we can gather the players and practice. That is not adequate. In Doha , there will be no Nepal of Afghanistan , but facing strong teams like Korea , Qatar , Japan and  Emirates.” Added the Ex-Persepolis CEO.

Kashani also pointed to the other problems that many players will face in Omid team and in particular the Military service, which is a fundamental and chronic obstacles in front of the young Iranian players.

The Manager of Omid Team admitted that the FFIRI has provided everything possible for the team and for that he is quite grateful. He also acknowledged the Military Service commission’s support in allowing some players to compete in the qualifiers. “I appreciate all the people who helped Omid Team case in order to compete in the best possible way.” However, Kashani went to by saying “ I apologize for the loss against Saudi Arabia , all I can say at this moment is that I shoulder all the blame for that loss (…) . I have nothing else to offer except to say I am sorry!”

There was no mention of technical flaws or coaching deficiencies nor player’s performance issues in Kashani’s statement.

Sousha Makani is kicked out of Persepolis

Team Melli and Persepolis goalkeeper , Sousha Makani has been kicked out of Persepolis team and told not to report back for training by his coach Hamid Derakhshan.

Before Persepolis’ yesterday’s match in the league ( Friday) , Makani indulged in a strong argument with the coach protesting the decision by  Derakhshan to play Masoud Homami in goal. Makani , notorious for his indiscipline , left the team in protest after failing to win his case. The Match against Rah Ahan ended 2-2.

During the post match press conference, Derakhshan announced that Makani will never return to Persepolis while he (Derakhshan) is the coach. “Makani left the squad without permission because I have not picked him for the match. This is not the first time that I had to deal with such transgression by the player. It is exhausting me and increasing the stress level. There is far too much indisciplined around here, but let it be known to all. I will not allow Makani to come back to the team. If they insist on him , I will leave the team.”

Sousha Makani

Mahmoud Khordbin , Persepolis Team Manager , while expressing his anger and deep disappointment with Makani’s misbehavior, confirmed that the goalkeeper has no place in Persepolis anymore as far as he is concerned.

Makani has been performing quite poorly of late for Persepolis. He has conceded several easy goals in the league and the AFC Champions’ league which was contributory to his teams losses. However and shockingly for that, Carlos Queiroz has selected him  for Team Melli squad that played two friendlies in Europe ahead of Rahman Ahmadi and others!

Government official denies allowing women into football stadiums.

After several newspapers reported that the government has finally allowed women to enter stadiums, an official of the Ministry of Interior , quickly squashed that as rumors and announced that the country’s Higher Security Council has not discussed or changed the  law that prohibits women attending sporting functions as spectators in stadiums or sport arenas in Iran.

Deenparast , the public relations spokesperson of the Ministry of Interior, in brief  notice to all the Iranian media, stressed upon the local media to seek information from the official channels and warned against spreading news that are not originated from the Ministry of Interior through his office.

Iran is one of the very few countries in the world that bans females from attending sports events in the stadia. Saudi Arabia is the other country, where women are banned from virtually any social activities in the vicinity of men.

Iran fans Melbourne Jan15.jpg [2]

Unlike Saudi Arabia, however, Iran has a strong women athletes community who are allowed to participate in most of the sports. There several Iranian World Class sportswomen. Many have won gold medals and honors for the country at international levels. The Iranian women are allowed to compete in international events outside the country where there is no gender restriction in attending sporting events, which means that males can watch the Iranian athletes competing in games such martial arts , shooting, football , volleyball. Yet if any such woman champion tries to attend a basketball, football or a volleyball match, she is denied entry and sent home.

There were cases of females attending matches under disguise who were caught and tried for unlawful activities !

The women in the stadium phobia by Iranian authorities is even affecting live television of Team Melli matches. None of these matches played outside Iran and in particular in western countries , are actually televised live. There are always 15 seconds or more delay in transmission to allow the directors to cut all scenes of Iranian women in the stadiums , deemed not appropriately dressed which normally means that their hair is not covered.  The other reason for the delayed transmission is to prevent the appearance of opposition groups holding political banners or slogans from appearing on the TV screens in Iranian household.

CELTIC have been linked with NEC Nijmegen winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh, according to reports.

The Iranian 21-year-old has won plaudits for his performances at the Dutch second-tier outfit since moving from his homeland in July 2013.

A former team-mate of ex-Motherwell striker Michael Higdon, Jahanbakhsh has scored 17 goals in 54 matches for Nijmegen, and is entering the final 12 months of his deal at the Goffertstadion.

His performances saw him named runner-up to Dutch international Memphis Depay as the Eredivisie’s Greatest Talent of the Season for the 2013/14 campaign.

The Hoops have had Jahanbakhsh watched and are monitoring the situation, although they face competition from the likes of Norwich, Anderlecht and Standard Liege in Belgium plus Dutch clubs Groningen and Heerenveen.

Originally with Damash Tehran and Damash Gilan in Iran, Jahanbakhsh joined Nijmegen in the summer of 2013 after agreeing a deal in May.

He has made 15 appearances for his country, scoring once, and can operate on the left or right wing.

Ronny Deila brought in Mubarak Wakaso and Aleksandar Tonev on loan to strengthen Celtic’s wide options but the pair have failed to set the Scottish Premiership alight and look set to return to their parent clubs Rubin Kazan and Aston Villa during the close season.

According to De Gelderlander newspaper, Nijmegen have accepted that Jahanbakhsh will leave and have slapped a €2 million (around £1.5 million) price tag on the winger.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic silences raucous Iran fans

to give Sweden 3-1 win

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored one goal and made another in a slick first-half performance as Sweden beat Iran 3-1 in a friendly in Stockholm, where the vast majority of the 33,773 crowd at the Friends Arena were cheering for the away team.

Sweden is home to more than 60,000 people who were born in Iran, and together with their children and grandchildren they packed the stands, outnumbering the Sweden fans and creating a cascading wall of noise for much of the match.

Ibrahimovic silenced them, albeit temporarily, when he gave Sweden the lead in the 11th minute.

His clever pass found Erkan Zengin, whose chipped return was powerfully headed home by the Sweden captain at the far post, despite the best efforts of Iran goalkeeper Alireza Haghighi to keep it out.

Zlatan turned provider 10 minutes later, heading Pierre Bengtsson‘s cross from the left back into the path of Marcus Berg, who swept home a deft first-time finish.

Minutes later the huge contingent of Iranian fans roared in delight as their team reduced the deficit via a penalty, with captain Javad Nekounam thumping home the spot kick after Vahid Amiri was brought down in the box by Andreas Granqvist.

Reza Ghoochannejhad came close to equalising early in the second half, bundling the ball past goalkeeper Robin Olsen only to see it come back off the foot of the post.

Iran coach Carlos Queiroz urged his charges on from the edge of the technical area, but Ola Toivonen put an end to their hopes with a towering header from Sebastian Larsson‘s cross just before fulltime.
