Davari excited with Team Melli.

After so much commotion when his name was announced by Queiroz, and then the news that Daniel Davari will not turn up for Team Melli, finally, the German born Iranian is here in Tehran in the training camp of Team Melli.

The Eintracht Braunschweig goalkeeper has made it this time to the delight of Queiroz, teammates and Davari’s excited father. The landing of the 25 years old in Azadi training camp was smooth and  he train with lots of enthusiasm and energy. Davari mixed well with all the new faces he has seen for the first time and seems to be in the right frame of mind for a debut. Whether he can dislodge Rahman Ahmadi is another question, however. Queiroz might try him out if results were favorable to Team Melli in the upcoming matches. In the long run, Daniel Davari seems to be the ideal candidate. At only 25 he has plenty of time to mature and get his position amongst the posts for Team Melli Iran.

davari2 Expressing his delight in joining Team Melli , Davari said that he has been thinking about this for a long time. Now that he is here, he wants to impress and make a difference. After a series of bad results , Eintracht Braunschweig won its first match in the Bundesliga which delighted Davari. “It is a good omen that we beat Wolfsburg before I came here to Iran. It was our first win the top flight and I am very satisfied by that.” Davari commented.

About his club , Davari said that the coach is using a rotating system for goalkeepers.  “It is a policy that I have to settle with. I find it quite demanding and it certainly increases competition for places”. Apart from his own club, Davari has no affection for any other German clubs but he admits that he is an  avid Arsenal fan.

Although Davari was selected during the Qualifying rounds of the FIFA world Cup for to join the squad, he did not turn up because of club commitments. In this point he said “It was a very critical period for us at  Braunschweig. Promotion to the Bundesliga was at stake. I would have loved to be part of the squad that won the qualification to the Worlds Cup, but unfortunately I couldn’t oblige and had to stay with my club until we won the promotion. I realize that I have a tough competition with Rahman Ahmadi here. He is a senior goalkeeper and was instrumental in Iran gaining the qualification. That is one tough task to replace him. I have lots of respect for Ahmadi, however I am used to competition for places and will try to gain respect of the teammates and gain the confidence of the coach in order to achieve some playing time.”

With Davari’s father accompanying him to Tehran, Davari Senior was quite disappointed that he could not see the practice session when his son was training with Team Melli in Azadi sports complex. The training ground was cordoned off by security with no journalist or other fans allowed. The security informed the press core that they were under strict instructions from Team Melli coaching staff not to allow anyone in. Apparently somewhere along the line, Queiroz has heard that a Thais spy is mingling amongst the Iranians and sending information to Bangkok to expose Team Melli tactics.

Training in secret , is becoming a habitual coaches practice. Under the disguise of secrecy and keeping plans under wrap, coaches prevent journalist and fans from watching from the stands. The as if new plans and tactics are introduced everyday.

The superfluous act, has hardly proven anything of real worth except to enrage the journalist and photographers who try to do their jobs covering Team Melli.

Iran U-19 begins the qualifiers with a win.

Sajjad Shahabzadeh added to Team Melli squad.

After much crtitism of Carlos Queiroz for his ignoring the domestic league players, Sajjad Shahabzadeh, Siap aprolific forward has been named in the Team Melli list and asked to jin the rest of the squad.

Shahabzadeh , who has already scored 6 matches in the league is the joint top scorer along with Periera of Foolad Khuzestan and Reza Enayati of Saba.

Meanwhile, Khosrow Haidary has been declared unfit for the Thailand game and will not be faturingh in that match. Hedary who had received a knock during the semi-final match against Seoul FC in the return leg of the AFC champions’s league has been suffering this injury for weeks and the treatement has not responded weel enough for him to be delcared fully fit.

Damage limitation excercise by Perspolis.

Tehran

Perspolis management is on the defensive.

Three major events involving Perspolis football club, forced the management of the club into reaction. By the issue of a communique , Perspolis club is hoping to clear its stance , respond to criticism from various sides against it and finally to defend both the coach Ali Daei and the CEO Mohammad Rouyanian.

The catalyst was the events of Sepahan vs. Perspolis match in the league, a match where Perspolis lost 2-0. The whole fracas started in the first few minutes of the match in Esfahan, when the referee awarded Sepahan a penalty and handed Maysam Hosseini the defender who committed the foul, a red card for kicking a Sepahan player. Apparently before that kicking incident, there was a scuffle with pushing and pulling between Hosseini and Sepahan and Team Melli defender Shojaa Khalilzadeh. Perspolis claim that the foul was initially committed by Khalilzadeh and he should have been yellow carded. Neither the referee nor the linesman did notice the original alleged foul due to the large number of players in the Perspolis box. However, what Ghahremani saw was a clear kick by Hosseini , which was confirmed by the TV camera. Daei hit the roof when he saw his defender being dismissed, but that was nothing compared to his reaction in the post-match press conference. Daei accused the referee of corruption and bias, claiming that he knew that Ghahremani will lean towards Sepahan from the night before. Based on those serious allegations, FFIRI investigated the whole affair demanding evidence and material witness from Perspolis. Yesterday, the verdict was out, at least provisionally. FFIRI disciplinary committee suspended the referee and his two assistants plus two Perspolis personal, but for events that were not directly related to the Sepahan match.

The second event came during and after Perspolis match against Saba in the city of Qom.  There is no love lost between Saba coach Mohammad Mayeli-Kohan and Perspolis coach Ali Daei. Their long running feud is a well-covered general knowledge in Iran as both take each opportunity to have a go at each other , although the records shows that Mayeli-Kohan more often than not , is the provoker of these tongue slashing .

Before the match, Mayeli-Kohan has expressed his concern about Ali Daei’s tactics and the methods he is employing to influence referees. Without naming Daei, Saba coach said that attacking referees in the media, accusing them of corruption without producing evidence and tarnishing their image will automatically generate fear factor in the referees and as such, they will feel immense pressure and would be very careful not to upset a team that has clout, influence and support.

Like a well written scenario, the fears and concerns of Mayeli-Kohan of Daei’s methods on influencing the referee materialized during the match. Mayeli-Kohan who was sitting on the bench and did operate in the technical area unlike Daei who was constantly standing and guiding his team, suddenly rushed madly towards the touchline. What triggered that was Daei’s protest against one of the referee’s decision which Mayeli-Kohan took an exception to and thought of it as a classical Daei pressure tactics to influence the referee, which he already warned about before the match started. The two coaches nearly clashed and had to be separated with Mayeli-Kohan seemingly quite graphical and enraged while pointing angry fingers at Daei and the referee.

In the post-match conference and the following days, the two coaches exchanged all sort of accusations reaching a level of mediocrity that has been rarely seen in Iran’s football.  Like always, the opinions were divided about whose fault is this one now. Mayeli-Kohan camp also accused Daei of siphoning money and appointing a family member (his brother, Mohammad Daei) without proper football coaching credentials , as an assistant coach  in Perspolis.  That was probably the last straw for Daei who embarked on an unprecedented verbal attack on his longtime foe. The media, especially those who always seek sensationalism in Iran had a field day quoting the two sides in their publications and fueling the fight.

Then came that famous Carlos Queiroz squad list , when the Portuguese coach of Team Melli included the name of Mehrdad Pooladi in his list, a player who has not played a single game this season and another Perspolis Defender , Hossein Mahini , who has lost his starting place in the team.

Inclusion of these two , not only alienated many players and coaches across the country,  it resulted in noises heard from CEO’s of other clubs, some of whom issued statements against Perspolis and the methods they operate to gain unfair advantage.

With all these affairs backfiring at Perspolis and certainly losing ground and support of many fans including senior ex-players who were perplexed by Perspolis antics, the Club issued the communique  explaining their stance in an attempt to calm the situation and the negative vibes against them.

It was a poor attempt by Perspolis, as much of what was mentioned in the communique was biased one sided opinions rather than facts (like their claim that the referee deprived them of 4 penalty kicks in one match !!!).

The long written press release then went into berating of Mayeli-Kohan for his verbal attacks on the club and its coach. Perspolis refuted Mayeli-Kohan claims that several players are on a one billion toman (Approx. US$ 403,000) contract.  The communique also refused to announce Daei’s contract details and the sum he is receiving and any other players contracts details  claiming that several Iranian clubs have more expensive players than Perspolis .”If these clubs are ready to reveal the figures, then we will do it as well” , mentioned the statement that was not apparently signed by the CEO .

US invites Iran for football friendly

Tehran

In another sign of thaw in Washington and Tehran’s bilateral relations, the US football federation has invited the Iranian national team for a friendly match in the US.

“US football officials are interested in holding a four-team tournament, featuring the US, Iran, a South American team, and a European team,” reported Xinhua citing Iranian Football Federation President Ali Kafashian Saturday.

“We have received approval from the US federation to attend the tournament,” Kafashian said in reference to the invitation, while adding Iran would play the US for the third time.

The two teams have played twice earlier. Iran defeated the US 2-1 at the 1998 World Cup in France, and both sides played to a 1-1 draw in a match in Pasadena, California two years later.

Iran and the US have both qualified for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

On Sep 28, when US President Barack Obama had a 15-minute telephonic conversation with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani, it was a first high-level conversation in over 30 years between the heads of state of the two countries.

During their conversation Obama spoke of a “unique opportunity” to make progress with Iran’s new leadership, amid a flurry of diplomacy over its nuclear programme. It was the first communication between US and Iranian leaders since 1979.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Saturday endorsed the diplomatic efforts of President Hassan Rouhani at the UN General Assembly while terming the US “unreliable”.

Futsal squad for Brazil Grand Prix announced.

After the completion of four session of Training for Futsal team Melli, Jesús Candelas, The Spanish coach of the team announced the names of the players included in the squad. The 14 players will be representing Iran in the Grand Prix tournament that is held in Brazil. Accordingly Ismail Abbasian, Mojtaba Nasirniya, Maysam Khayyam, Javad Asghari Moghaddam, Ali Asghar Hassanzadeh, Farhad Tavakoli, Vahid Shafie, Ghodrat Bahodory, Ali Kiaei, Alireza Vafaei, Farhad. Fakhim, Masoud Daneshvar, Hossein Tayebi and Mojtaba Hassanzadeh are the 14 players selected for the competition.

Before the announcement of the squad , in Jesús Candelas.  excluded five Giti Pasand players from the squad.

The team will depart Tehran on the 13th October enroute to Sao Paolo Brazil. The first action for the team before starting the Grand Prix tournament is a couple of war up games against unidentified opponents.  The Grand Prix competition will start on the 22nd October with Brazil, Argentina, Japan and Iran playing in the group.

On this occasion, Candelas was interviewed by Mehrnews about his impression and the prospects of the Team. Candelas who has been at the helm for just over a years now, believes that Iran’s Team Melli and Futsal in in general is progressing nicely towards world recognition. He believes that the current team will be mature enough and tactically sound. With or without him, Candelas believes that within 4 years Iran will be challenging for World Level titles or at least playing in the final games.

Candelas said that he was not bemused by the absence of 5 Giti Pasand player who were the backbone of the team. However , the Spaniard said that we have to do play with the best that is available for us not cry over spelt milk. About his main concern of this current selection and participation against the best futsal teams of the world, Candelas said “the only concern I have is the player’s psychological status and mentality. They need to believe in themselves, believe in their abilities and give the best performance in front of the most powerful opponents. If they maintain the self-belief, we can become winners”

Reading into Queiroz Selection.

Carlos Queiroz announced a fine mix of youth and experienced players or the upcoming Team Melli matches against Thailand and Lebanon in the AFC Asian Cup qualifying group.

28 players were named by Queiroz , 8 of them play their football outside Iran.

Team Melli was announced after the conclusion of the round 12 league matches and started the training session today (Sunday) at the Team Melli training camp center. Out of the players selected, the foreign-based players were absent and will be joining the team in the next few days.

As always, there is a debate going on about the players selections depending  on whom you talk to. Although the selections sounds logical and to certain extend a fair reflection of the current status of Iran’s football, Queiroz mus

Ashkan Dejagah (Fulham)
Ashkan Dejagah (Fulham)

t always create some kind of controversy with a few of his choices.

Selection Debates

The Portuguese coach continues his fixation with European based players unabated.  As it happens, none of the Team Melli players in the European teams have fared well this season. Perhaps this is a bit of understatement; the reality is much tougher than that. Ashkan Dejagah (Fulham) and Reza Ghoochannejad (Standard Liege) , arguably the two best players in the squad , have failed to play regular football in their respective clubs from the start of the season. They have also failed to make the bench in many matches, reflecting how poor the coaches of these teams consider their Iranian players. The other high profile player, Masoud Shojaei is playing his football in a second division club in Spain, and he has not set his club Las Palamas alight yet.

The two youngsters in the team playing in European clubs, Azmoun (Ruben Kazan) and Jahanbaksh (N.E.C) , who have been selected for the first time to Team Melli squad, have not fared much better either. They are both fringe players given the odd few minutes now and then.

However, being on the roster of a European club , regardless to the fact that the players gets any playing time, seems to be a guaranteed way to be named in Team Melli squad. Interestingly enough, Alireza Jahanbaksh when asked in an interview by a reporter why he opted to join a struggling team which just escaped relegation the season before, ( and now lingering in the bottom of the Dutch league) he pointed out that he needs the European experience but then stressed upon the fact that being in a European team is one definite way of being noticed by Team Melli selectors !  Obviously, the youngster has been coached well in this matter and smart enough to get what he wants.

Not selceted, sorry !!

Bakhtiar Rahmani (Foolad Kjuzestan)
Bakhtiar Rahmani (Foolad Kjuzestan)

On the other hand, two of the best and most impressive players for their teams in the league have not been given any notice. Bakhtiar Rahmani , a young talent with flair and ability playing for  Foolad Khuzestan, and Perspolis brilliant  and  skillful player Payam Sadeghian  have  failed to make it to the disappointment of many observers and neutrals.

Both are young , both have great influence in their team, with Rahmani’s team  leading the table and both have already played for Team Melli different age levels teams. This season with nearly half the league matches played, the two players are showing much tactical maturity that is ripe for selection. However, with Queiroz out of Iran for one reason or another, his supporting cast have failed to recognize the abilities of two youngsters who perform to a high standard week in week out , and instead opted for another youngster Sardar Azmoun , who has not reached any of the two aforementioned players standard while rarely playing for his team!

Perhaps , the questionable personal and professional attitude of Sadeghian has tarnished his image lately, a fact which was highlighted in his TV interview by Ferdowsipour , and might have been noticed by TEam Melli selectors. There is no such doubt on Rahmani, though

Not that the young players in the roster will have deciding role in the team , but the selection such as that will nevertheless, raise questions and increases the sense of distrust between Queiroz and the club coaches who always  take the opportunity to claim that Queiroz is not interested in Iran’s league and hardly watches it. Such selection logic, and it is only Queiroz that knows the logic, will serve to fuel more debate amongst the fans and the sport journalist.

And there will always be one Mehrdad Pooladi for Carlos Queiroz.

The last time this player was selected for Team Melli, he was barely able to walk. Pooladi has suffered a long period of inactivity because of the injury. He has not played for his club this season, yet he is on the roster once again repeating the same selection process with Shojaei a few months back when Masoud Shojaei was selected for Team Melli while just recovering from his long layoff and has not played a single match for his club.

Steven Beitashour
Steven Beitashour

But all is not bad news, as the selection of Steven Beitashour is as exciting as the naming of Dejagah a year or so back. Beitashour is still an unknown quality for the Iranian fans. He plays in Major Soccer League in USA which has no TV coverage in Iran , so the exposure is minimal. However, he is a skillful midfielder and defender who can also score. The only problem with Beitashour will be the logistics. Travelling back and forth to America is simply not an easy feat for a football player.  His selection is a big positive mark for Queiroz, especially after Beitashour was courted by Team Melli for a long time with Afshin Ghotbi desperately trying to bring him in, but efforts failed, mainly due to the politics of football. Iranian government did not fancy an American Born plying for them.

With the thaw in Iranian-American relations, Beitashour playing for Team Melli is a reality. He is a passionate person who maintains his adoring for his ancestry country and tradition. His commitment will be an interesting observation.

Latest Team Melli squad announced

Carlos Queiroz announced the list of 27 players who will joint Team Melli camp in preparation for two upcoming matches. Team Melli will be meeting Thailand in the 15th of October in Azadi in the qualifying rounds of AFC Asian Cup 2015.

The list announced included the Iranian-American Steven “Mehrdad” Beitashor a long time candidate for Team Melli. Steven Beitashour is an Iranian American born professional soccer player who currently plays for the San Jose Earthquakes in Major League Soccer. The 26 years old was courted for playing with Team Melli on several occasions , however , it has only materialized now with Queiroz efforts and hence included in the latest squad.

3 other new players have made the list, all of who play for your European clubs. Sardar Azamon (Ruben Kazan) , Daniel Davari (Eintracht Brunswick) and Alireza Jahanbakhsh. In addition , Ashkan Dejagah and Ghoochannejad are both included. None of the legionnaire Iranian players have played a major role in the teams with the stars such Dejagah and Ghoochannejad not even making th bench of their team.

FFIRI names Team Melli sponsor

Ali Kaffashian has finally signed the long awaited sponsorship deal with an Iranian company.  A company that trades in car imported from outside the country with the name of “Ars Khodrow” has agreed terms with the federation.

Although far from being a household name or well-known company in Iran , the sponsorship is a step forward for a federation that has serious financial issues especially as the preparation for Team Melli participation in the World Cup is a lengthy and expensive process.

Kaffashian claims that the sponsorship revenue from this deal will cover most of the expenses including the coaching team’s wages.

The revenue figure mentioned in this deal is : 15 Billion Toman  (approx. US$ 605,058), is far lower than the federation expected and could be the lowest of all the teams qualified for the World Cup.
