There are two sides to any successful team and, for 181 minutes at Brazil 2014, Iran have been near-flawless in one. Certainly, few defences at this FIFA World Cup™ have been as disciplined or well-drilled as Carlos Queiroz’s, and it took a goal out of nothing – a moment of pure Lionel Messi inspiration – for all their diligence to be undone.

That flash of Messi magic denied the Iranians a second successive clean sheet, and according to Ashkan Dejagah, there is an inevitability to their campaign having been built on such foundations. As he told FIFA.com: ” We don’t have players like Messi, [Sergio] Aguero and [Angel] Di Maria, so we need to focus on making ourselves as well-organised as possible The shape of the team, making sure we’re tough to get through defensively, is something that has been very important for the coach in the build-up to this tournament.

“He’s spent a lot of time on the training field making sure that we have that we’re compact and ready to take on the best teams in the world. Neither Nigeria nor Argentina had many chances against us and, realistically, that’s the only way we can go about things. If we played a really open game against players like Messi, they would have killed us.”

Opening up and going on the offensive has, though – thanks to Argentina’s No. 10 – gone from being a dangerous option to being Iran’s only option. Anything but victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina will, after all, dash any lingering hopes of reaching the last 16, which makes finding a way to goal the key challenge.

“The fact we’ve not scored yet is something we need to put right,” acknowledged Dejagah. “I think we were really unlucky against Argentina though. We had a lot of chances and it was one of those games where everyone in the team did their job and played well. It’s hard when you lose a game like that, although you have to stand back and give credit to Messi. It’s times like those, when games are really tight, that the great players show how important they are. But we can still take positives and be proud of our performance.

“I actually thought I’d scored in the game against Argentina – that header I had, I thought it was in for sure. But again, you have to applaud their keeper for a really fantastic save. I think a goal will come for us though. We definitely have players who can score and I think we were more dangerous in our second game compared to our first.

“Hopefully this third match will bring another step up. We’ll definitely be going for goals and we still have a chance to go through, I’m sure of that. What we need to do is take the good things we’ve done so far, improve a little bit in other areas and give everything to beat Bosnia. If we do that – and I think it’s a game we can win – we can still qualify.”

Having come up against most of his upcoming opponents either in the Bundesliga or the English Premier League, Dejagah knows better than most that the debutants boast plenty of individual talent. However, the 27-year-old Fulham midfielder – who represented Germany at youth level before declaring for Iran – is relishing his first experience of the World Cup, and has no desire to join the Bosnians in heading for home.

He said: “Being at this World Cup has the highlight of my career, for sure. Every footballer wants to play at this tournament and, here in Brazil, with the atmosphere, it’s even more special. I’m really enjoying it. And, believe me, I really want to make sure we stay here for as long as possible.

Magnificent Messi strike breaks the hearts of Queiroz’s men

Argentina 1-0 Iran

A stunning strike from Lionel Messi snatched a 1-0 victory for Argentina against a spirited Iran side in Saturday’s World Cup clash in Belo Horizonte.
Few would have expected Argentina, viewed as one of the favourites to win the tournament, to be given too much of a test by a team that has never gone beyond the first round of a World Cup in three previous appearances.

However, Carlos Queiroz’s side, who had been criticised for their defensive style of play following their opening Group F goalless stalemate against Nigeria, produced another resolute display at Estadio Mineirao on Saturday to come within a few minutes of a highly creditable

draw.

But, in injury time, it was Messi who stepped up when it mattered most, curling home brilliantly into the corner to give the South Americans a place in the last 16.

Meanwhile, Iran will head into their final group game with Bosnia-Herzegovina on Wednesday reflecting on an opportunity missed, and knowing that only victory will be enough to extend their tournament.

Argentina unsurprisingly dictated the opening stages without creating any clear-cut opportunities against an Iran defence that displayed the same determination as against Nigeria.

Gonzalo Higuain was the first to test the Iran backline after 13 minutes, but goalkeeper Alireza Haghigi showed quick reactions to race out and block the Napoli striker’s effort after he had been played through by Fernando Gago.

Higuain was involved again as he linked up with Sergio Aguero inside the area, only to see the Manchester City man’s curling effort brilliantly kept out by a fine diving save from Haghigi.

Aguero then headed wide from a corner as Argentina’s dominance of play continued, yet Iran, with impressive commitment and organisation, did not have too much difficulty in keeping the South Americans at bay.

Iran’s ability to maintain parity also owed much to Argentina’s profligacy, which was demonstrated in the 35th minute when defender Ezequiel Garay headed a Messi free kick over the crossbar.

Queiroz’s men were able to fashion some first-half opportunities of their own, the best of which came after 41 minutes as centre-back Jalal Hosseini turned Ashkan Dejagah’s corner narrowly wide of the post.

Pablo Zabaleta went close from the edge of the area in the opening stages of the second half, but it was Iran who continued to look more threatening.

Indeed, they would have taken the lead in the 53rd minute had forward Reza Ghoochannejhad not directed his header straight at Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero following a fine break.

Iran felt they should have been awarded a penalty a minute later after Zabaleta appeared to bring down Dejagah, with replays suggesting that the South Americans had been given a let-off.

At the other end, Messi failed to find a finish after surging forward with an archetypal run from midfield and curling wide of the post.

With time running out, Romero was called into action to tip Dejagah’s header over and Iran had an even better chance when Ghoochannejhad was sent clear one-on-one but saw his somewhat tired finish parried.

But just as they looked set to celebrate their famous point, Messi struck.

The Barcelona man worked space on the edge of the area before opening his body to bend a shot into the corner, as Argentina’s class – and more accurately that of their captain – finally told.

A great injustice and a greater heart break

A last minute individual piece of brilliance by the greatest football player in the world , Lionel Messi has deprived Iran of a very deserved draw at least. Messi scored in the 90th minute after receiving the ball outside the box with only one player shadowing him from distance , Reza Ghoochannjad and Nekounam further few feet away. Messi , took his time adjusted and  shifted sideways then curled a fantastic ball to the far right of Haghighi whose flight was not good enough to stop the ball hitting the net. One moment of defensive lapse against the best player that cost Team Melli dearly.

Close range save by Haghighi against Higuaim.
Close range save by Haghighi against Higuaim.

That was not the full the story. The Serbian referee blatantly , unjustifiably failed to observe a foul by Zabeletta on Ashkan Dejagah in the second half.  fear and recrimination has lead this referee to ignore one very obvious penalty call.

Team Melli was unlucky no to score when a right cross from Pooladi found Ghoochannejad who headed straight at Romero in Argentina’s goal ,  the lose ball was cleared by Argentina defense.

The greatest save of the match and probably the World Cup so far came from a similar side when Heydari crossed for the fast advancing Dejagah , who headed delightful and powerful into the goal, but a magnificent fingertip save denied Iran a well deserved goal.

Then cam the heart break at the end.

The fans should be proud by Team Melli’s performance against one of the strongest teams in the world. It was the combination of  injustice by a poor referee and one moment of magic by Messi that denied Iran. There were some unsavory scene at the end of the game when some bench Team Melli players protested against the referee.

Queiroz uses a robot in Team Melli training.

ISNA reported that Carlos Queiroz has used a novel method to simulate the level of attack that Argentina and in particular Lionel Messi can create on Iran bu using a Robot!

The Robot was shooting powerful balls towards  the goalkeepers. Alireza Haghighi was bombard with such shoots during the practice session yesterday. However , it is not clear how Queiroz has simulated the abilities of the wizard Messi to dribble past the defenders.

FIFA World Cup 2014 Group ‘F’ News

Argentina

Argentina have risked punishment from Fifa after displaying a banner translating as “The Falklands are Argentine” before their friendly with Slovenia last night.

The Argentine Government still maintains the South American country has a legitimate claim to the islands, which Britain and Argentina went to war over in 1982.

The overtly political gesture by Argentina’s football team before their 2-0 win over Slovenia in La Plata could lead to sanctions from Fifa – and risks reigniting the dispute between Argentina and Britain over the islands on the eve of the World Cup.

Two hundred and fifty five British servicemen died during the Falklands conflict, which was sparked by Argentina invading the islands in the South Atlantic.

Why the players decided to display the banner now is unclear, but support for reclaiming Las Malvinas (as the islands are known in Argentina) is believed to still have strong public support.

Argentina are one of the favorites to lift the World Cup, as their side boasts a host of world class attacking talent, including superstar forward Lionel Messi.

Nigeria

Nigeria defender Elderson Echiejile will miss the World Cup because of a muscle injury.

The 26-year-old Monaco player limped out of Nigeria’s 0-0 friendly draw against Greece in Philadelphia on Tuesday shortly before half-time.

Echiejile underwent a scan where the injury was diagnosed as a muscle tear, which is expected to keep him out for up to three weeks.

He will be replaced in the squad by Enugu Rangers winger Ejike Uzoenyi.

Coach Stephen Keshi said: “Doctors have said Echiejile will need up to three weeks to recover from the muscle tear but we don’t have that type of time to play with so we’ve taken the decision to replace him.”

Nigeria face Iran, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Argentina in Group F, beginning their campaign against Iran in Curitiba on 16 June

Iran

Team Melli players expressed their delight by the Volleyball victory over Brazil yesterday in the 2014 World League. Both the Iran’s national volleyball and football teams are in Sao Paulo competing at the highest level of their sports.

Karim Ansarifard , Team Melli striker, in a short interview talking through an interpreter said “I was so excited to hear the news that the Volleyball team won the match in such a result. I know most of the volleyball team members and we are friends., this news really gives me the utmost pleasure. Rest assured that the 3-0 win againt the powerful Brazilians has already motivated us to perform as good as them in the FIFA World Cup.”

The fact that Ansarifard said that he heard the news , means that the player did not watch the match live on TV and certainly did not attend the match.

On the other hand , Brazil National Football team , who are in Sao Paulo , was supposed to attend the match against Iran to provide moral support, however security concerns prevented Seleção Brasileira from going to Sao Paulo’s Ibirapuera Gymnasium.

Iran, after another football miracle.

The second rival Argentina in the World is marked by conflict and selected by a memorable victory in World against U.S. It comes as one of the top two in the Asian Cup. Watch the video of the historic victory of Iran in France 98

Sayed Jalal Talebi, the coach of Iran explained it clearly in the days before. “in the locker room, those ninety minutes would last forever. Defeat could have the character of a life sentence. But a victory would transform them into celebrities territory in which football is also a space for expression.” Talebi , the coach of Iran football , talking about his players who played in that famous June 21, 1998 match, at the Gerland Stadium, under the sky of Lyon, France in World Cup. Opposite U.S.A rival in the field of international politics since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. That match raised much interest in every aspect but less in footballing terms as an event which was mentioned in every corner of the planet. The British magazine FourFourTwo called it the most politically charged match in history . But for the world and the millions of people watching , around the globe, the television showed mutual regards, respect and even flowers exchanged between the two rivals as a treat. The players of both teams posed together for photos and mingled. Even in the stands, both groups of supporters shared the traditional wave that had become popular from Mexico 1986.

That day, Iran felt like an instant world champion. Beyond the suspense that was forced by the rebound of by Brian McBride with only three minutes of the game left, it was a party that moved from the heart of Western Europe to the streets of Tehran, Mashhad, Isfahan and Karaj. 2-1 victory created its own heroes: Hamid Estili got a header, flicking the ball over the goalkeeper Kasey Keller and celebrated as if he wanted to embrace the whole country. Since then became an emblem also outside the field: Sayyed Ali Khamenei Supreme Leader of Iran expressed his appreciation to him in public; and the man wearing the number nine bluntly expressed himself as a follower and admirer of former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The second goal was scored by one of the most prominent Iranian soccer players of all time: Mehdi Mahdavikia. with a burst of speed in a supersonic counter, ran leaving his chaser for dead , beat them all with sheer speed from the left, before the advancing goalkeeper came rushing , but Mahdavikia beat him as well with the tip of his right loot. That match and his performance in the World Cup helped him to be transferred to Germany: from then until 2010 he played in the Bundesliga for Hamburg, Bochum and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Football in the country was traversed by conflicts , as was the life of normal Iranians. After the Revolution of 79, between 1980 and 1988 the war with Iraq was followed. The consequences were estimated at a million dead, more than two million injuries and four million displaced by the horror. Football took a back stage. Until those painful days , the national team , Team Melli , was a machine to beat:
consecutively winning three Asian Cups played between 1968 and 1976 with a perfect record. Two years after this excellent series in Argentina, Iran debuted in the World Cup. Team Melli debut was a 0-3 loss against Holland in Mendoza. Four days later, a milestone happened: Cordoba, Iran scored its first goal (by Iraj Danaeifar) and scored its first point with 1-1 draw against Scotland.

Then out into the world, the most popular sport also became a prisoner of war. Federation decided to withdraw from the FIFA 82 Spain and refused to participate in 86 of Mexico’s inability to play in their own territory. For security issues, FIFA claimed that their matches should be played in neutral cities. Local competition was also affected. Only in the nineties , after the war ended , the restructuring of the league and football started to take shape. Until it became ripe with the generation of 98-led by Ali Daei, the player with more goals and more games in the history of Team Melli. This generation was to bring Iran back to the world stage.

Apart from conflicts, football is a tradition. The film “Offside” by the famous Iranian director , Jafar Panahi , is a testament. The subject of the film was attempt to watch a World Cup 2006 qualifying match against Bahrain in the stadium. Iranians have a passionate and unanimous support for the teams that represents them. But with certain restrictions. Two young women wanted to go inside the stadium where they were not allowed to. They disguise themselves as males. On the way, the two girls have the backing of several fans who seem less interested in respecting the boundaries imposed by gender and religious sermons. The film, which won the Golden Bear in Berlin in 2006, was inspired by a true story: the daughter of the director himself.

Iran has a long history of football. The Federation was founded in 1920, but joined FIFA 25 years later. However, already in 1941 a team that played (and scoreless draw) with Afghanistan in the first meeting on record was formed. Anyway, the first match in an official capacity, was played in 1950, against Turkey in Istanbul. It was a time of learning: on that occasion, the team lost 6-1. Two decades later, with other faces but the same enthusiasm, the Iranians would become the best in the continent.

Mehdi Mahdavikia scores against USA
Mehdi Mahdavikia scores against USA

After many ups and downs, now Iran will play their fourth World Cup . In its previous three appearances , Iran played nine games and just won that memorable game against the United States, drawn two and lost six. Iran last performance in Germany 2006 was a tie farewell: 1-1 agsint Angola in Leipzig, with a goal from defender Sohrab Bakhtiarizadeh. This time Iran is full of expectation to overcome the hurdles and qualify from the group stages for the first time. The path of the Qualifying matches in Asian zone portrays that expectation and it is a latent possibility: the team finished first in one of the final two groups of the continent and only Japan had more points in that instance. The overall numbers speak for themselves: ten victories, four draws and two defeats.

Hiring Carlos Queiroz is another indication in respect of that ambition to take the plunge. hierarchy and expertise was sought. The Portuguese coach, who led Real Madrid in the 03/04 season and was assistant to Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, has an extensive road coaching selections: he led the United Arab Emirates, South Africa and headed to Portugal in the last World Cup. Now, with a fresh and young team (only two players over 30 years), will try to become the revelation of Group F, which will face Argentina of Messi, June 21, in Belo Horizonte.

the Iranian football is now living in a different era. As the stadium seems to tell the story: “Azadi”, opened in 1971, located in the heart of the sports complex that bears the same name, in Tehran looks like a monument of wonder. According to a British website What Culture, published last year, the stadium is among the ten best in the world, up to Old Trafford, Camp Nou and Soccer City, venue for the last final in South Africa 2010. From the heart of Azadi in the Iranian capital, the strong national team is determined to show its worth in Brazil and its rightful place in world football.

There where Iran will attempt to build another football miracle.

Argentina: Romero first choice GK despite being a reserve in his club!

It is not difficult for any fan or expert to mention the strong spots of Argentina national football team.

The FIFA ranked 3 team , has the services of the World greatest footballer in Lionel Messi and two of the world  most lethal strikers in Sergio Agüero and Gonzalo Higuaín playing in the forward line. That combination can destroy any defenses at will. However , Argentina, like many teams have weak spots too and nothing is more obvious than their defense line. Despite having the services of several veteran players, none of their defenders are in the same class of their forwards. Recent matches in Europe highlighted some of the Argentine defenders shortfalls including lack of pace and some wild tackles leading to penalties and sending off.

The goalkeeping is one area that Argentina have traditionally fell short of expectation , and this time around, history is repeating itself.

Reuters has report on the current goalkeeper situation in Argentina team:

(Reuters) – Sergio Romero will be Argentina’s first-choice goalkeeper at the World Cup in Brazil in June despite spending most of his time at Monaco on the bench, national coach Alejandro Sabella said on Thursday.

The former winners are likely to have one of the strongest attacks at the finals but their defense has come under scrutiny with Romero being criticized for not always commanding his penalty area.

“Romero had a good match and I consider him an excellent goalkeeper who unfortunately is not getting continuity at his club,” said Sabella of the keeper’s performance in last week’s 0-0 draw with Romania in a friendly in Bucharest.

“Apart from the odd injury he has always been in my team … the position (at the World Cup) is his,” the coach told the Radio La Red Argentine station.

Sabella said he had decided on around 90 percent of his 23-man World Cup squad.

Argentina have been drawn in Group F with Bosnia, Iran and Nigeria.

Tevez has no World Cup hopes.

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Carlos Tevez holds out no hope of being part of Argentina’s World Cup squad and prefers not to watch their matches on television, the Juventus striker said on Friday.

The 29-year-old, who has been in fine scoring form with 10 Serie A goals for juve so far this season, has been overlooked since Alejandro Sabella became Argentina coach in August 2011.

“If Sabella hasn’t called me up, I’m not going to phone him to find out why he doesn’t pick me,” Tevez told Argentina’s La Red radio station.

“Sabella must not be asked to call me up… Let him work in peace because it’s not easy for Sabella not to call me. I know there’s a lot of pressure especially from fans.”

The former Manchester City, Manchester United and West Ham United striker said he had a good relationship with the Argentina players and national team captain Lionel Messi.

“I have no problems with the group and I get on great with Messi. I don’t lose sleep over the World Cup. I don’t think I will watch it because it hurts me to see the national team, it’s bad for me,” he said.

Some media pundits say Tevez, who last played for Argentina in the 2011 Copa America quarter-final defeat by Uruguay, may not fit into Sabella’s tactical plans while others argue that he might disrupt the squad’s harmony.

Tevez was part of the Argentina teams that reached the quarter-finals of the last two World Cups in Germany in 2006 and South Africa in 2010.

Argentina, winners in 1978 and 1986, are in Group F with Bosnia, Iran and Nigeria at next year’s finals in Brazil which kick off on June 12.
