Coach Mohammad Mayeli-Kohan

Born in Bandar Anzali on June , 5th 1953. A controversial character who has always been in and out of trouble since his playing days. As a Team Melli player then a coach , Mayeli-Kohan was always opinionated and bordering extremist in his views. His first stint in 1996 was in fact a huge success. After years of Iranian football being in the doldrums as a result of the long war against Iraq , Mayeli-Kohan took over and rejuvenated the team.
Asian Cup 1996 was the highlight of Mayeli-Kohan's career and a youthful Team Melli under his coaching , managed to win the third place in Asian Cup , although they have beaten the champion Saudi Arabia comprehensively 3-0 in the group stages , Iran was eliminated in a penalty kick off in the semi by the same team.

Mayeli-Kohan was sacked in 1997 due to his personal differences with many senior players. His exclusion of Ali Daei from the squad playing the the preliminaries of the World Cup 1998 was the Achilles heel. Mayeli Kohan did not heed to his peers demand to restore Daei to the team , and the shock defeat by Qatar resulted in his intimidate sacking.


in 2009 , Mayeli-Kohan was selected as a head coach for the second time in his career. It was a short lived advent however as he was sacked once again before even taking charge of any match or training session. Once again , Mayeli-Kohan became embroiled in a controversy during a TV live sport show.
