TEHRAN - Amir Ghalenoei's reign as Iran coach began on a positive note on Tuesday as Team Melli defeated the United Arab Emirates 1-0 in a friendly at the Azadi Stadium.

Esteghlal striker Gholamreza Enayati gave the new coach the ideal start when he opened the scoring after only five minutes.

The Iranians dominated proceedings in the Asian Cup qualifying warm-up with Javad Kazemian and Mehrzad Madanchi hitting the frame of the goal but were unable to add to the scoreline.

Iran have a busy month ahead with three Asian Cup Group B qualifiers in three weeks. They host Syria in Tehran on August 16 before visiting Korea on September 2 and Syria four days later.

UAE, who lead qualifying Group C with a maximum six points, face a pair of matches against Jordan, in Amman on August 16 and in Dubai on September 6.
